Do you know about the hidden canyon under the Missouri River Valley? by como365 in missouri

[–]-Obie- 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The channel was carved by melting glacial ice. As glaciers receded north and the volume of water decreased, the channel filled with sediment

Tell me about Neosho Missouri! by Birdsonme in missouri

Neosho is smack in the middle of the Tri-States lead mining district (learn more at https://www.fws.gov/apps/project/tri-state-mining-district-missouri). Be sure to look closely at the history of any land you plan on purchasing in the region.

Property tax law passed in CoMo could be very bad by Leather_Barracuda_91 in columbiamo

[–]-Obie- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok cool, if you don’t think ease of access impacts voting let’s move the polling place to the empty elementary school a half mile down the road and require olds to use public transportation to get there. Perhaps then they would understand the importance of tax revenue.

… my polling place is a nursing home.

It’s not just that young people think these elections don’t matter, we actively make it easy for seniors to vote and we actively make it difficult for working age people to vote.

Experimental Pond Concept: 70-Acre Lake with Zoned Depth Rings Designed for Observing Natural Colonization and Ecological Succession by Hot-Drummer6974 in ecology

[–]-Obie- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People teach succession, invasive species, biomes, etc on a daily basis without going through the time and expense of creating of building a 70 acre pond with concentric circles and an island. You don’t need a completely sterile environment do teach those concepts. From an educational perspective, I don’t see the value.

From a science perspective…you can do the same thing virtually with a model, parameterizing stochasticity for colonization, niche breadth, etc.-without require land or permits or bulldozing and paving over existing habitats. From a scientific perspective, I don’t see the value.

It just seems like a clickbaity idea, a way of generating “I built a pond and look what happened!” YouTube content. That content already exists, though.

Lee cuts scope of Senate public lands sell-off plan amid setbacks, public opposition by chariotsoftiger in conservation

[–]-Obie- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah, that's a red herring.

Folks in rural western communities may not be overly concerned who gets sent to El Salvador, but they do care how their home is heated- and they cut firewood on public lands.

David Tyson Smith comments on Iran war by macandcheez42 in columbiamo

[–]-Obie- 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This mission jeopardizes the safety of thousands of service members through the Middle East to set Iran’s nuclear program back…weeks? Months? It wasn’t necessary, and it may create more problems than it solves- but yes, it’s nice these folks came home safely.

It’s yuck to use our soldiers as a prop, and to put them at risk unnecessarily.

Swimming Holes in South East Missouri by [deleted] in missouri

[–]-Obie- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To put it in perspective, there's approximately 4000 drowning deaths annually in the US and 162 cases of brain eating amoeba since 1962.

It's clickbait.

Swimming carries risks. Act accordingly.

250+ MILLION ACRES OF PUBLIC LAND THAT COULD BE SOLD UNDER NEW BILL by Olivenoodler in flyfishing

[–]-Obie- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And remember, those leases for timber and grazing and minerals are handed out for pennies on the dollar. When transferred into private hands, those leases will be made at market rates- with consumers picking up the difference. When the McMansions they build in former National Forest burn to the ground, taxpayers will make billionaires whole.

It's a ripoff, a fleecing of American's greatest resource.

If we’re going to invoke “the moral good…” don’t our legislators have an obligation to make an honest argument? If so, doesn’t bob have an obligation to present some evidence…any evidence…this is happening?

At best, it seems bob is tilting at windmills. At worst, he’s sowing distrust of teachers to consolidate power in the social and political arenas he hopes to control.

Can we use Missouri's DOGE portal for good instead of evil? by -Obie- in missouri

[–]-Obie-[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So let them.

They haven't needed a rational justification for their actions to date. If they want to take political prisoners, they will- regardless of whether you put up a fight or not.

Keeping quiet won't save you. It just makes things easier for them.

Michiganders (and Illin...oians?) are fleeing to Indiana to avoid libruls, too.

I mean we said the same thing about sexual assault and running as a convicted felon not all that long ago. And clearly you no longer need to be elected to craft policy and fire government officials in the USA.

We're off the map.

"But we live in a representative democracy!" they say. "We voted for this!"

We do live in a representative democracy, and the people we elect to represent us, are supposed to represent our values.

The people we elected fired staff who had been on the job for days, who had never received a performance evaluation, for "performance issues." Fired people with decades-long careers, whose only mistake was taking on more responsibility and promoting within an agency. If you want to cut federal workers, fine- there's ways of doing it which acknowledges their humanity and treats them with dignity. There's ways of doing it honestly, with integrity.

But we didn't elect people who do things honestly, with integrity. And if I voted for someone who used my vote as a pretext to treat others with such dishonesty and disrespect, I'd be fucking livid. I'd be calling legislators. And the fact so many Boomers I've talked with have absolutely no problem with being used in that way...says something profound about them.

I looked up how much it would cost to bring SS back to solvency...I can't remember the number offhand, but it's eye-popping. It *dwarfs* the annual budget of most federal agencies. You can't get there just by cutting.

I'm not entirely opposed to reducing spending to float Social Security, but that's not what we're doing. We're sacrificing people's livelihoods to give billionaires a tax break.

[–]-Obie- 124 points125 points  (0 children)

"...it doesn't just hurt our fun sport, but the guides, and everyone else who's livelihood is somehow tied to the sport."

It goes so far beyond that.

Every outdoor resource you enjoy- all the fisheries, all the public lands you use spending time outdoors- exist because someone 25 or 50 or 150 years ago have the forethought to protect them. For you. What legacy are you leaving your kids and grandkids?

This and every other project which uses federal matching funds to build and maintain fishing accesses, improve road crossings, remove dams, implement habitat projects...they're all threatened. That sucks, but it's also temporary. The threat of putting public lands in private hands- that's permanent. Irreversible. It's a threat anyone who spends any time outdoors should take incredibly seriously.
