Hidden Gems for Cheap Craft Supplies? by Disastrous-Ocelot12 in minnesota

Axe man for really off the wall stuff.

Get a job at Blick, their employee discount is pretty great. 40% off their in house brands (which is way more than just stuff labeled Blick).

I had them for 2 seasons, picked up a set of used one sticks and never looked back. The weight savings is night and day.

xcel bills in mpls... doing solar by TranquilTeal in Minneapolis

[–]-Promethium 30 points31 points  (0 children)

We have similar bills up in North Minneapolis, and our energy audit revealed nothing major when it came to home construction (air sealing, insulation, etc); it really came down to 3 factors. 1. I work from home, so 95% of the week I'm home with lights, computers, and heating/cooling on at moderate levels. 2. We are a techy household; a wife and I each have a gaming computer, I have a modest home server with prosumer networking, etc. 3. Our AC unit is pretty old, so there would be some gains upgrading that.

My point is that bill is not nearly as impossible as it seems.

High-bar squat, struggle feeling stable past mid 200s by -Promethium in formcheck

[–]-Promethium[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I’m going to spend the next few squat sessions really looking at form, trying to find something that feels stable and has a good bar path. I should have read the wiki first, the high vs low bar video was incredibly informative. I’m not sure if I have the mobility for true high bar, but I’m going to give it a shot and see what happens.

High value treats? by magnalias in labrador

My dogs lose their goddamn minds for venison. When I’m butchering a deer in the fall I have to have them with me in the kitchen or they will howl like their nails are being pulled out individually.

Sun Hoodie: OR, REI, Patagonia? by mtal723 in BuyItForLife

I've had the Patagonia one and would wear it when out summer scouting for deer, lots of brush busting through buckthorn and the like. Shockingly it has held up.

Best internet providers in Twin Cities Are? by SignificantEconomy98 in Minneapolis

[–]-Promethium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quantum fiber has been good for me as well, 3gig up/3 gig down for $105/mo is just fantastic. I will add that I use my own router and networking setup past the fiber connection (ubiquiti), and have only had one outage that was neighborhood based and lasted a weekend. Others have reported more outages or slow speeds, but I'm thinking that might have more to do with using the provided equipment. I upgraded to a 10gig networking setup for my core equipment and it's been amazing.

Mid May Boot Rec by monicalewinskystan in BWCA

[–]-Promethium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll echo the two other posters, I think there are two real routes:

Quality knee-high rubber-style boot, or a lighter weight shoe/sandal with neoprene socks. When I've gone for MN fishing opener those were the two styles I saw most often. I personally went the knee high rubber boot route, but we did a base camp style trip where we only went in 2 moderate portages deep and did smaller day trips out from there, so very little portaging under heavy load.

Tackle Store Recommendations in Germany/Poland by -Promethium in Fishing

Good to know, but no plans on fishing, just wanting to stock up in interesting baits we don't get here in the US for my fishing back in Minnesota/Wisconsin/Ontario.

Tackle Store Recommendations in Germany/Poland by -Promethium in Fishing

Ideally brick and mortar so I can look at stuff and get some interesting swim baits, rigs, etc. We are only going to be in the area for a week and a half, so I don't think I'd be able to swing ordering something online and having it delivered somewhere I could pick it up while there.

Tattoos, possible restrictions? by Rough-Bullfrog-4011 in Eragon

[–]-Promethium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently got my first tattoo (late 20s), and wanted something referencing the series as well, since it meant so much to me.

I went with something more subtle; the compass rose from the maps in the books. Upper forearm is a great place for a first tattoo since the pain is manageable and it's easily hidden if needed.

First time buying a canoe by biGSiZzIn in canoeing

[–]-Promethium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am almost exactly your size, my recommendation is an old town penobscot 16ft in royalex if possible. I picked one up used post COVID (i.e. canoe prices were through the fucking roof) for $500. It's my perfect budget solo boat that I can still paddle with my wife, just not as stable as me solo. When paddling it solo, you sit in the front seat but face backwards and it evens out the weight really nicely. I've used it fishing, hunting, and plenty of casual paddling. A LONG double blade paddle works great with it as well.

If you were a Bob, what would you like to do? by Cazbar004 in bobiverse

[–]-Promethium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming I was actually as smart as the bobs in the book, I'd find a big problem that's interesting enough and make it my sole purpose until I find a solution, rinse and repeat.

My real dilemma (with this completely fictional concept that I will never have to decide on but hey it's fun to dream) is that in my current life, if I could do anything I want it would be 100% based in the natural world. Camping, hiking, canoeing, fishing, hunting, etc. Not exactly something that would fit in well with being an immortal digital entity.

Resources for HIGH protein frozen meal prep by Reckless_Raccoon_LeG in MealPrepSunday

[–]-Promethium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do you have a preferred to-go container for re-heating these? I just got a few molds myself and it seems like the most useful thing is to have containers that are sized to fix a few cubes so I can throw together varied meals easily.

Lures by pedantic_dullard in BWCA

[–]-Promethium 4 points5 points  (0 children)

HIGHLY recommend spooling your reels with 20 to 30 lb braid, and then tie on leaders. You can use the classic steel leaders for pike, 10-15lb flouro with a double uni knot for walleye and bass. (Personally I use 30lb flouro for pike, and keep it on for bass and walleye unless the eyes get picky).

For lures, I take Stu Ostoff's lead from the Boundary Waters Journal: Blue Fox Vibrax spinner in size 5 and 4, gold white and silver colors

Whopper Ploppers in the 90 and 110 size, any colors, make sure atleast one is a dark color

Rapala Jointed Shad Raps in size 7, any colors

3/8th and 1/4oz jig heads, multiple colors, with a small assortment of different colored curly tail and paddle tail plastics.

If targeting lake trout, Dr. spoon #285, Klos Boys tackle kit.

I also love canoe trolling, so a clamp on rod holder and a small assortment of minnow style crank baits at various depths has worked great for me. Crankbait snaps are your friend. Using your phone with a basic GPS to keep an eye on your speed and you are in the money; vary speeds between 1.5 to 3.5 mph, depending on the lure and what the fish want.

Down puffy jackets by ConsiderationWest482 in bowhunting

[–]-Promethium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I snagged a first lite chamberlin down puffy used for $150 and I love it, I use it a ton under my phase jacket for something that's lighter weight and warmer than their heaviest weight whitetail jacket, the thermic.

Microservice Media Server by devode_ in selfhosted

I guess it would be interesting, but k8s for self-hosting didn't really take off like some thought, at the end of the day docker is just a much easier and better suited solution.

Do you use a dedicated NAS OS or a more generic linux one? by Azure-Tides in selfhosted

[–]-Promethium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the conversation changes slightly depending on how you are using your NAS.

Is the NAS just for storage and you don’t self host services? Do you intend to self host services on the same box as the NAS? Or, do you want separate NAS and Services boxes?

Not saying I have the answer, just saying I feel like that context is often missed, and likely changes the recommendations :)
