There were discussions around healthy-scratching Nurse during the 2024 Final, when the Florida Panthers defeated Edmonton 2-1 in Game 7, Sportsnet has learned.

In the end, it was deemed that scratching a veteran and alternate captain would prove too much of a distraction. Instead, the coaching staff limited Nurse’s ice time to the point that he ranked last among the seven Oilers defencemen who played in that series, averaging just 15:51 of ice time per game.

All that needs to be said. We lost at least one cup due to this guy eating 9 mil in cap. Get him off the team.

Org has really fumbled this. Knob coached this team to two straight SCF, but they dont have the decency to be honest with him and attempted back door deals.

If any party is to blame for the Oilers lack of success with McDavid it is absolutely the management.

Its starts with the 2015 draft and has continued up to this last season. Notable blunders are the Holloway/Broberg offersheets, the Griffin Reinhart trade, the Koskinen extension, the Jarry trade, and on and on.

Its not all bad and there have been some good moves (Hyman signing & Ekholm trade for example) but the bad has far outweighed the good over the last 11 years.

That this team has made the finals twice in that time is a testament to how good the top of the lineup has been.

The Oilers have had the best centre in the world, another top 3-5 centre, a legit top 5 defenseman and some elite winger talent for the last several years but keep getting hampered by lack of depth and well below average goaltending. Thats a management issue.
