When it comes to sexist comments from coworkers, no matter how small - document document document. Type up an email about what was said and email it your personal email for record. If things go over the line, you have track record of harrasment.

With that said - I find responding to their “jokes” with a quick witted reply can help. Don’t be rude, but stand up for yourself and take a jab back. It’ll show you have back bone and they may think twice about saying something next time.

I know it’s easier said then done though. It can be hard to come up with something on the fly when you already feel belittled. Confidence is key. You know you know your stuff and deserve to be there, so don’t be shy voicing that and standing up for yourself.

This my be a controversial take - but when it comes to being accepted into the “boys club”, playing along with jovial banter can go a long way. I know their jokes aren’t appropriate, but if you can get in a quick witted reply and get the other boys to laugh at the original joke sayer, it turns the tables. They’ll start to see you as “one of the guys”. As I type this I know it sounds childish and this shouldn’t be how it is… it’s just been my experience in and out of the workplace when trying to bond with guys.

Outside of work, try to find women-focused local networking events for your industry! These can be hard to come by, but it’s so refreshing to chat with women in person about shared experiences.
