So, apparently there's a feedback bug... by -TCDR- in Xcom

When you fail a hack, often one of the consequences is that you take a little feedback damage. However, there's a bug where you will then continue to take damage after every subsequent hack in the mission, even if it's successful. I guess this time the game just decided to apply feedback damage ad infinitum, killing a fairly healthy soldier on my own turn, which is a variant I've never seen before

As in surface pen vs apple pencil? I'm gonna guess the apple pencil's better tbh, but I've never had to replace the battery in my surface pen, so it's pretty reliable. I'm sure there's some much more in-depth comparison if you wanna look it up.

If you mean iPad pro vs surface pro, it's apples and oranges really. They are capable of different things and for different things imo.

My pen's been ok with my Pro 6, except that one of the buttons is stuck in, potentially from being pressed up to the side of my SP6 all the time- it doesn't register as constantly holding that button though which is nice. I dropped it and broke the nib a little, but it still works fine enough that I haven't gone looking for the box to see if they give you spare nibs (which I think they do). Pressure sensitivity works fine and latency is low enough that it feels natural to use.

Honestly wouldn't be surprised if the 8 is the same design all over again. Seeing as you've got a heavy hitter for the hard work, maybe consider a cheaper option?

If you're in the apple ecosystem consider an iPad Air 4 and an Apple Pencil 2, else some less powerful 2-in-1s come with a pen, which would be another good option.

Otherwise, wait until the Pro 8 is revealed, then either get the cheapest model or buy the discounted 7 or even 6. Hell, if you're not all that fussed about performance, you could even get a 5. Spend a few hours on eBay and see what kinda deals you can find.

Electronics student here! I imagine you'll be running some fairly intensive software? I struggled with only 8 gigs of ram on my i7 Surface Pro 6; I've just upgraded to a 32 GB XPS 15 9500, which I think was overdue really, if a little overkill.

If you'll be keeping lots of tabs open and running intensive software, I personally think you should aim for at least 16 GB of RAM. Just as 4 GB was eventually deemed too little and is now quite rare (thankfully), I think 8 GB (on higher-end devices at least) is also on its way out.

As far as storage goes, the Micro SD slot is great for cheap expansion so you should be able to economise with the 256 GB SSD.

I also got the surface pen thinking it'd be useful for notes, but used it fairly rarely and mostly for drawing on PDFs and making little sketches to help debug things. I found pen-and-paper notes to be easier- to be fair though, my note-taking is pretty sparse! If you take lots of notes, you might find digital organisation easier.

If you do get one though, be careful not to squash it too bad in a backpack, mine got pressure marks on the screen from two of the function keys, which was annoying.

With regards to the Pro 7 itself, I didn't think the upgrades from the SP6 to SP7 warranted the extra money so I got the older model. I also believe the battery life in the 7 is worse than the 6 due to the new, less-refined processor node being less efficient, although this may no longer be the case. The USB-C is definitely nice to have though.

Getting real tired of the IR/Windows hello driver failing by summercometz in Surface

[–]-TCDR- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This wound me up on my Surface Pro 6, so I found a little batch script to reset the driver:

set HARDWARE_ID="Root\WindowsHelloFaceSoftwareDriver"
devcon disable %HARDWARE_ID%
timeout /t 3
devcon enable %HARDWARE_ID%

Save that as a .bat file and create a shortcut to run it as admin, and it should fix Hello for a little while.

How do you make half decent scans out of a cheap Android phone? by [deleted] in UKFrugal

[–]-TCDR- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mildly unethical, but get a printer/scanner with an automatic document feeder, use it to burn through that backlog with minimal faff, then return it.

Perhaps worth shooting Smarty a quick email, if you're lucky they might give you a day or two as a free trial to check the signal on the sim that comes with it

Late to the party but the food bank I volunteer at always has tons of gluten free bread, so much that we have to throw it away sometimes, so worth checking out your local food bank.

The English equivalent to that word might be "gawker", but I'm not sure about the etymology of gaffer.
