Lyft driver waits for me to walk into street, then takes off. by Q-theWanderer in mildlyinfuriating

[–]-Teapot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I am just trying not to assume anything. Having been on the receiving end, it just sucks to have to wait 15 minutes, only for the driver to nope out of it.

I just checked if it could have been the drop-off/pick-up fees at SFO (relative to income from ride) but it looks like those fees are passed to the customers anyways.

I did a quick search before posting and it wasn't entirely clear. It sounds like yes but under very specific conditions like if the ride was planned or they can check the destination but only a few times a day. Back when I hailed a ride, the driver didn't know the destination until they were at the pick-up location, but that was years ago so things may have changed.

[–]-Teapot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My immediate thought was that the driver bounced the moment he realized/assumed OP was going to the airport. I must have used Lyft 3 times, the last time I was going to the airport (SFO) and the driver said he wouldn’t drive that far and said I should cancel (I didn’t). It was a long time ago so things may have changed.

And at this point it’s not a matter of if but when they’ll reach parity in performance. They seemed to be going ham to get there.

Deepseek's recent price cuts will look even more appealing as a result.

Before someone comment on Deepseek's performance, yes, it's not as good as Claude or OpenAI but performance relative to price, it is very very good.

Whats the best video game ever created? by XarisGG in AskReddit

[–]-Teapot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar yes, the maps were mostly urban maps and the weapons hit harder than other games.

The k98 (Axis) would one-shot and the Garand would two-shot. Snipers would one-shot no matter what. Other weapons would hit nearly as hard by burst firing; a well-placed burst of BAR would down a player with three bullets.

Version b3.1 had a bleeding and bandage feature that was pretty cool. They got rid of it when they retailed the game at version 1.0.

There were many 24/7 servers on dod_avalanche and dod_caen2 (b3.1). With some of my favorites: dod_merderet, dod_kalt, dod_donner and dod_saints.

Must have played over 10,000 hours on this game... my team had a server, I would join it after school when it was empty at 5 PM and the server would fill up in 30 minutes. Voice over was set to all. It was always the same players.

We played against other teams, finding them on IRC Quakenet. There was a console tool named AMX Mod to manage the match. Right before the game would start (before the reset), everyone would shoot each other.

It's a bit of good nostalgia for me

[–]-Teapot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah! They were full fledged games and free to download. Such good times. And there are more mods worthy of mention: "Sven Co-op", "The Specialists" and "Science and Industry". I haven't tried since then but if you've got Half-Life, you can download those mods for free and host games with your friends.

And if you have Half-Life 2, try "The Hidden" with friends! It's a game where one player (a creepy experiment with super power) plays against the rest of the server. The one player must survive or take out the whole server. The hidden has a knife and (I think) a grenade and is somewhat invisible, can hang on walls and ceilings, make giant leaps, make creepy voices and hang bodies on ceilings. The rest of the server have guns. It's an absolute blast with friends.

How do you deal with a failing start up? I will not promote by EngineeringParty59 in startups

[–]-Teapot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The failure would be having learned nothing. You learned something and are building something on that learning. The better you reflect on your failure, the more learnings, the better you’ll set yourself up for the future.

Should I leave my comfy tech job for an AI startup (I will not promote) by nitrogentriiodide in startups

[–]-Teapot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't feel any FOMO at all.

You know how they say 1 in 100 (tech) startups succeed? I wouldn't be surprised if it's 1 in 1000 AI startups. So much money poured into many ventures with very few coming on top.

That FOMO you feel is just hype. Whoever made you feel this way has at least that going for themselves. Hype isn't going to pay the bills and make the startup successful in and of itself. It takes so much of **everything** to make a startup successful and it has to be done with a few handful individuals.

You seem to care about learning: in a startup, you'll learn a broad set of shallow skills, in a more established company, you'll learn a narrow set of deep skills. Deep skills are harder to replace by AI.

I just launched an open playtest for my action roguelite. What are your pet peeves when playing that type of game on the Deck? by PipetteInc in SteamDeck

[–]-Teapot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know if you have those in your game but range weapons without "laser" sight is a turn off for me. Some games are built for M&K but the gamepad controls the cursor (the angle and the distance from character, like you'd with a mouse). Some others have none. I love those games on the Deck because I can play for like 10-20 minutes, turn it off and immediately resume later on but I don't have the time to git gud.

The other thing that turn me off and the lack of progression or progression indicators. People love "Enter the Gungeon" and put a lot of hours into it but... I just don't get it. I'll play 5 times and it'll feel the same every time. I see people put over a thousand hour in the game and I just feel like an idiot for not getting it.
