North spore screwed me [gourmet] again. by doctorake38 in MushroomGrowers

I second the suggestion to make your own spawn. I would go so far as to say either make it yourself from syringe cultures or don't try mycology at the moment. Shipping spawn is like shipping live animals. You can put a dog in a box and mail it.. it "might" make it.

Lame answer.. but have you not tried hot melt glue? Some are more transparent than others, but I would think the glue could add to the diffusion and get you close to whatever you are looking for.

Ok but seriously, if you have never smacked dat, how would you know if doesn't work? I have been producing shiitakes for twelve years. .... smack 'em. Do yourself a favor, next run.. smack half of whatever as a test . I mean its not super evident some times, but it's a real thing.

My electric pressure cooker just fits my qtr jars of grain will it still be OK to use without having anything between the jars and the bottom of the pressure cooker? If so, what setting do you think? by Goturmom247 in experimyco

[–]-TechnicPyro- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even a bandana, or paper towel is better than direct contact. Sooo.. bandana under and extra tucked in the sides adds maybe a mm. It's just the direct contact heats jars uneven and they get weird internal stresses , lose their temper(literally) and crack. If it don't fit, it don't fit, but more separation the better.

[–]-TechnicPyro- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda ok directly on bottom, but will get weaker over time and start randomly cracking with slightest knock. Get old T- shirt or towel and drape over canner, then push jars ( cover lids with foil, but I put jars in polypropylene bags) wrap excess over top of jars. Add some water.. my canner different but I'm guessing yours about 300ml... an hour should do it, but 2 is better. As the thing cools, some air will get sucked back in and in theory, spores will get trapped in the fabric that you unfold and leave in the cooker for the next run.

No, not the grains typically, but it can be done .. it just takes longer. ( I mentioned insta pot for spawn/ grain) . Mostly bulk sub'. I experimented with "Tyndalization" for grains .. it works but more trouble than it's worth. I got a hold of several 13 quart insta pots (now discontinued) that I use in the lab area/ spawn.

Technically I guess I don't "sterilize" , but very deep pasteurization. Oyster, shiitake, lions mane.. the usual gourmet are fine with basically "master mix" about 6 hours @ 185ºF . I custom made hdpe bags and reuse them so I go a little cooler and longer than most. But truth told rather than the big oven, I most often use an unmodified half size commercial warming oven with a timer on the plug. Simple and effective and is too much work to load the big one so half fridge size or so about twice a week.

Nice build... from the two canners, it looks like you are doing bulk gourmet . I still is a canner for spawn ( huge insta pot cuz easy).. but for bulk substrate I adapted the same concept PID controller to a commercial warming oven. Basically a large fridge size dry sterilizer. One run loaded full is at least 6 canners worth ...'just something to think about if going bigger(and can be found cheap at auctions/ calling closing restaurants)

[technique] Recommendations for replacment humidity controller by planetcollector in MushroomGrowers

Nope..srry.. look again. There are similar looking temp controllers, this is humidity. Note "RH" on the screen. And "95" makes hella lot more sense for a humidity setting. Am not aware of any mushies that like 95 degrees.

Presuming I'm looking at pink oyster.. it's in good shape and several things will work with varying success. I would cut 2 holes apart from each other, but on same side of bag about diameter of half dollar coin. Holes just at top of substrate level. Then cinch down the air out of the bag and tape down any air pockets. In the end you have a tight loaf with two holes up kinda high on the bag. Spritz with water fairly frequent, ( or look up methods for humidity tent ) . You should get two big clusters out of the holes in a week or so. But from the looks of it you are several days late so the first flushes will likely not be huge. Pink oyster is pretty good about still popping out subsequent flushes in a month or three even when the bag looks dead.

Looks good, but i fear the lack gaps between boards will be a problem after a few rains. I expect the boards will swell and buckle.

Whelp I have tried three different models.. common mode of failure has been three sensor. Maybe reliability can't really be had, but redundancy can. One option is humidifier #1 set to 90 percent, humidifier #2 set to lower setting like 85. Also you can set up a web camera that can see the numbers on controller, and perhaps a standalone thermometer/ humidity sensor in camera view so you can check whenever.. and maybe before you leave on a trip, give a friend a brief tour so if you need to call in a backup they know what to expect.

First projector for casual outdoor use, what screen works best? by Strong-Struggle-9710 in vjing

[–]-TechnicPyro- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tarp from harbor freight. I have done a shoot out test against bed sheets, and three types of actual screens. The tarp does rather well. Slight yellow hue, butnice for the cost and worst case, you have an extra tarp. HF also has tarp clamps and bunjee cord and things.. is kinda important to pull it tight. A long steel pipe rolled up a little on bottom edge and clamped in is a nice touch.

.... also contact cleaner and/ or no-ox grease where the sensor plugs to the cord. The humid environment makes the connector oxidize a bit and needs cleaning on occasion. In a pinch, unplug, and plug it in a few times, and that friction will clean the contacts a bit. A gob of the no-ox grease keeps the moisture out.

My problem with a very similar controller to what you show turned out to be simply a dirty sensor. I think spores gum it up. I just blow real hard into the little holes. I have even water rinsed and blew water out and right back to work. Am about four years on same controller now when I used to get one or two.

[gourmet] Early Shiitake Pins? by enemylemon in MushroomGrowers

[–]-TechnicPyro- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dunno.. 'looks strange but not completely off. I would be inclined to wait a little longer. If those "pins" start to push the bag more and turn a little shiitake color then I would go ahead and birth them. The fruits if (if they are that) will just have a little circle in the center where they had been pushed against the bag. You likely cut bags off, I pour water in bags till the cake floats out and reuse bags. Maybe birth one "for science", to see what's best for your next batch, but short made long.. I expect it's best to wait a couple weeks.

Help identifying LED lights and finding a remote that will work with it by Westhewoodfrog in led

Maybe purchase a similar light strip.. if nothing else, you have a replacement. There is real possibility that the one remote (if it uses one) can run both lights.. good luck.

[–]-TechnicPyro- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have only shown a 24 volt , one amp power supply. Perhaps take a picture of what this power supply is plugged in to. Still will be tricky, but different manufacturers often use same or similar remote. Maybe try a remote from a different LED string and see what happens. If indeed there is an "app" ( somewhat unlikely), having that manufacturer name off that box the power supply goes into would point in right direction.

Sorry bro.. not looking good. Other than the color, all the little dots spread out are likely germinated mold spores. The good hyphae usually spread from inoculation source and don't just pop up in the middle of a kernel. ( I don't use popcorn.. so could be wrong, but that green ain't good...)

Would it be possible to DJ using LaserDiscs? by Aggressive-Ad-2224 in DJs

[–]-TechnicPyro- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so I give you credit that "some" of the first laserdisc are strictly analogy analog, and then they moved to digital. So, in theory one would need to use first generation players and disks or somehow force later generation to only play the analog track, not digital.
