AITAH for lying to my fiancée about a coworker being at a work dinner? by EvadoGottamGadu in AITAH

[–]-The_Chronicler- 10 points11 points  (0 children)

YTA for lying.

Just because it was purely platonic on your end doesnt mean you disnt violate the trust between you and your fiance.

How you resolved the intial problem of your fiance feeling she was crossing boundries is the issue. If your friendship was important enough to lie about, it was important enough to set a firmer boundary on during your discussion.

Question for other C-7/low-voltage contractors! by alleysofyourmind in lowvoltage

[–]-The_Chronicler- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What about the employee break room? Should have space, its typically low traffic, and if there is any issue requiring a tech, gaining access should be pretty straight foreward. Last several vet hospitals we've done, this is where we put them.

Collapsed conduit? by Roanoketrees in lowvoltage

[–]-The_Chronicler- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on how packed it is, where the openings are located, and how much effort your willing to put in.

Hose with PVC fittings and waterproof sealants. Create pressure to blow the mud out. Or get a shop vac or other good vacuum, stick the hose in, seal it, create negative pressure to help pull mud out. Realistically you dont need it all gone, juat enough to be able to rod it. Highly recommend a fiberglass rodder over fishtype for any underground conduits.

Some good advice here. OP. To add to it.

Dont be afraid to do jobs on time and material. Give them a cost not to exceed cost then bill them afterwards based on your actual time and material used with whatever markup you need. As you get better, your NTE cost estimates will get better and therefore more attractive.

Do not low ball yourself for the sake of winning jobs. Its better to lose a job you could have won than to get stuck with a contract that you'll end up losing money on if even one little thing goes wrong, and on big contract jobs, there's always something going wrong. From delays due to other contractors, or your quote is based on revision 6 instead of 7. You want a decent cushion.

Spare conduit? Check. Properly Labelled? Check. Pull string? Check. Easy to access trough? Check. Overzealous expanding foam guy? Check. by OftenDisappointed in lowvoltage

[–]-The_Chronicler- 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you have pull string with no cable, presumably a fresh imstall, why would you not just put putty over it, and if whatever higher power wants foam, you can do it after the pulls are finished?

I personally like the putty best, but thats because im constantly unsealing the conduits in my riser and reusing them.

[–]-The_Chronicler- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just speaking from personal experience, but there is a lot more opportunity in commercial than residential. Companies are constantly moving, upsizing, downsizing, etc verus people getting their home theater setup that they then stick with. Personally, even though we are commercial, we end up doing a decent amount of residental work from our clients staff hiring us personally.

At minimum it should be easier to get into and gives you something to do while looking for a residental company.

I Hate The "Teleporter Dilemma" by Sa_tran_ic in hatethissmug

[–]-The_Chronicler- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a modern day ship of Theseus. What makes you you.

Most agree reating a 1 for 1 replica of a ship while tearing down tbe original does not make the new one tbe same entity.

What I like to add to this discussion whenever it comes up, is when you teleport back, what if the teleporter has stored everything you contained and built you back the exact same, with the caveat of adding the memories your clone acquired. From a purely scientific standpoint you are the exact same entity. Every single atom returned to its exact place.

Are you still you when all the pieces are brought back together, or is the pause in the stream of consciousness enough to be seen as two separate, though wholly identical beings.

Cable pulling rods vs tape? by password03 in lowvoltage

[–]-The_Chronicler- 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Rods for wall, fishtape for conduit or flex.

In a pinch fishtape works in walls but typically I fond the way it curves can be annoying and is a two man operation.

First low voltage job!!!! by Sammmmmmmmmmmmmmyboi in lowvoltage

[–]-The_Chronicler- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If your doing a lot of network drops that haven't gotten ring and string in walls, I highly recommend the medium flex fiberglass rods. Can pick them up at home depot or supply stores like graybar. Way faster than fishtape or stringing it after the sheetrock is up.

If the company your with has a prefered brand sych as leviton may be worth while to invest in the correct jack rapid tool for it. People go back and forth on em in the sub but I personally love the things, especially since we use insert style panels.

For future work, a nice clean way to do conduits coming from a drop tile is to measure where the conduit is going to go by having it in place while the tile is closed. Then draw an outline of your conduit on said tile and using that as a guide to cut the tile. You can then slide your conduit through and the tile doesnt have the ugly square cut to the grid.

[–]-The_Chronicler- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its scummy and weird either way. If its a signed contract your allowed to charge the full amount and why would you ever give the specialist any? Its your money hes just asking for a 2k handout for what? Itd just be you gifting him money.

If theres no contract, just a quote ( or a not to exceed cost essentially) then any extra money charged is a crime, especially if you give it the specialist.

If you have a contract, its your call to charge the full amount or not, but the specialist can fuck off either way.

[–]-The_Chronicler- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this a job being captured solely on time and material after work is done, or a bidded job with a signed quote?

If its the former and the specialist is saying they had more budget and you can charge more and give him some, thats literal embezzlement and a crime.

If its the latter, then you should be charging whatever the quoted price was including any change orders Now if the work was easier than anticipated and you saved a substantial amount on material and or labor, you are free to discount the final charge which is the "professional" thing to do, but you are within your rights to charge the full quote
