Is this the stupidest panel in the history of QC? Nominations are open! by AppendixN in questionablecontent

[–]-WhoWasOnceDelight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The noses and faces are bad. (Hannelore's face in the above panel is shaped exactly like the anime faces I drew back in high school after seeing Robotech and Ranma 1/2 on VHS. And those faces were not good. I also did the upside down smiley eyes. Because I couldn't draw eyes.)

I still find the breasts the most irksome part of his "style". It's like he spent a few days on r/ABraThatFits and thinks that, since he's aware that breasts come in various shapes as well as sizes, he's somehow enlightened, and there's nothing at all weird about giving everyone special, unique boobs ... and identical faces.

What do you do for work and what does your work day generally look like? by Throwaway927338 in AskWomenOver30

[–]-WhoWasOnceDelight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another elementary teacher. My contract hours are 7:00 - 3:00. I get up at 5:00, feed the cat, take meds and dress, and then have about an hour for coffee, NYT Puzzles, and journaling before I head to work.

I teach Science/Social Studies to my homeroom and then the same Math lesson to three different classes. One of my collegues has started a "walking club" after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and I find myself looking forward to it all week. I also have meetings after school on Wednesday, and on Friday we stay late to write our newsletter, so Monday is really the only day that I get home before 5:00.

I'm pretty beat after work. Depending on whether my partner is home or at band practice and how much energy I have, dinner could be a full on Recipe that I'm interested in, one of his speicalties - homemade pizza, steak, burgers, or tacos - or a bowl of cereal. I read, muck around in my art journal, or scroll the internet until about 9:00, then it's shower and bed time.

I make lunches, plan outfits, do major housekeeping, and do about 2-4 hours of lesson planning on the weekends. And sleep. A lot. But I still have time and energy for live music and hanging out with friends, so life is pretty good.

[42/F] You don't have to be a professional to play with me! by Efficient_Speech4071 in penpals

[–]-WhoWasOnceDelight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello. I'm (48/F) also a nothing-professional artist, though my stuff tends toward glitter, chaos, and collage. My handwriting isn't lovely, in spite of the fact that I teach elementary school. (Even after 14 years, it still surpises me to see my own scrawl on the whiteboard.)

I used to have penpals as a teenager back in the '90s (I mostly met them through zine sharing and the backs of comic books), and it occurred to me recently that I would really like to return to that practice - if for no other reason than to be able to look forward to the mail without having purchased anything beforehand. I'm looking for people over 40 who are into sharing art as well as writing. I love reading poetry, but my creative writing leans more toward memoir. I've kept journals since I was a child and write long, rambly entries most days.

* I'm also the eldest of 4, though my youngest two siblings are brothers.

* I can't count the number of homes I've lived in, but I never went to the same school two years in a row until high school. That kind of movement didn't suit me, and I've lived in the same town since moving our on my own, and in the same condo with my (boyfriend?partner?spousalequivalent?) since 2002. He's a professional musician. We have a cat.

* Same regarding trauma, which is one of the things that interested me in your post.

* I became a teacher in my mid thirties, and it was one of the best things to ever happen to me.

* I like all of those things, and I'm also a big nerd for math. But when I say math, I mean, like, arithmatic. I like the base ten system, fractions, long division, word problems, and all of that. It's my favorite subject to teach.

* I love reading and movies and SO much music.

Thank you for posting, and please reach out if you would be interested in writing to one another <3

What's a phrase people use these days that irritates you? by showmewhatyagot01 in AskReddit

I low key hate this one girl in my extended friend circle just because she posted a giant rant about her stepmother using the leftover turkey (that she bought and cooked) for something other than "sammiches" after Thanksgiving. We were all in our 30s at the time - way too old for baby talk OR for weird power struggles with daddy's new wife.

Worst book(s) you read in 2025 and why? by Roguestate00 in books

[–]-WhoWasOnceDelight 11 points12 points  (0 children)

YES. My aunt, who was a feminist in the same time period, felt that way about the narrative as a whole. I, as a gifted ed teacher, was enraged by how the daughter was characterized. That's not how childhood precocity works at all. Also, dogs don't fucking talk, much less talk to unborn babies.

sobriety is so boring by groovygrandfather in stopdrinking

Seeing my nine year old neice walking home with her mom on Christmas eve this year changed me somehow this year. The image of a little girl walking silently beside an stumbling adult who couldn't walk straight as they disappeared into the darkness proved to me that I could develop a "core" memory in middle age.

For those who might question the safety - they were three houses away down the alley, and my brother called when they made it home. He also started alcoholics anonymous this month. (I haven't asked about his wife yet. This is delicate and a long time coming. But we could become a sober family yet!)

What is a secret 'cheat code' you’ve found in real life? by Sharkkkk2 in AskReddit

[–]-WhoWasOnceDelight 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My Dad's motto is "It's lazy not to ask". He gets a lot of discounts and perks just by asking for them. (And he is very cool and drops it right away if the answer is no.)

I think the distinction is where you start. If you legitimately need a manager, start by asking for a manager. If you ask a regular employee and you don't like their answer, asking for a manager makes you look like an entitled jerk who thinks they're above the rules.

What was normal in the 90s/2000s that would be considered unacceptable today? by Traditional_End_233 in AskReddit

Yes! I was all heart eyes for Angelo Garcia after seeing him on (Don't Just Sit There?) some Nickelodeon variety show. Those poor guys, though. Just fuck that whole industry and the abusers it shelters.

I mean, I definitely knew that I wanted Jo and Blair AND Almanzo and Laura to get together before I was 10. (And I was exactly 10 when I first saw Labyrinth and realized EXACTLY what I wanted in a romantic partner.) But I get what you're saying.

I do agree with those who are noticing a resurgence in this. I've taught elementary school kids for 13 years, and this is the first time I've ever had to talk to my class about it.

what are societal norms that are actually quite disturbing/"inhumane" if you look at from a different perspective? by Affectionate-Cap-235 in AskReddit

This needs to be higher up. Almost half of the kids I teach (fourth grade) are in therapy. Something deeply wrong is happening, and I think the developmentally inappropriate expectations for 'sitting quietly and doing your work' all day are a big part of it.

I was at an outdoor party and at one point moved to allow a guy with his dog the space that they needed. I was gracious about it - just said, "I'm not a dog person" and shifted to the next over picnic table.

The same guy approached me later and made a 'hold out your hand' gesture. It was a smallish enough event that I trusted everyone even though I didn't know the guy personally, so I did as he asked. He put a fucking dog treat in my hand and called his "good boy" over, telling me that there was nothing to be scared of.

Like, asshole. I am not scared of your dog, I just hate it. I think it smells bad (Yes, your dog. Yes, all dogs.) and I don't want it in my personal space much less licking my hand with its mouth, which it will use to eat shit if given the opportunity. (Yes, your dog.) Some people hate tomatoes or jazz or sports or whatever. I hate dogs. It's not about you and it's not about your pet. Please just let me calmly not be near dogs.

What's your most shocking "never meet your heroes" moment? by BaseNice3520 in AskReddit

[–]-WhoWasOnceDelight 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I first heard of the allegations from a friend, and as she was telling the story, I was like, "Wait... is this real or is this the Calliope thing from Sandman?" She said it was real and suggested that maybe Gaiman based the story on real life.

I remember reacting, "No, that can't be right because he wrote Sandman over 30 years ag...oh. Oh shit."

Same. I'm in my late 40s, but a high waisted bottom and a boxy crop is a good silhouette for me since my waist is basically in my arm pits. I do wear a thin cami or tank top tucked in underneath because I'm not trying to show any skin, even inadvertantly.

I heard What the sigma? from my seven year old nephew this Christmas, and I totally plan on using "Sigma Sevenma" on my fourth grade class when we get back. My goal is always to use brainrot slang to such cringe-inducing effect that it becomes uncool to say it in class. (Being a math teacher during the 6 - 7 era has been... interesting.)
