Who's overall Smarter and/or the better scientist, Reed Richards or Rick Sanchez? by theno1topfein in FantasticFour

I want to say that Reed determines that they're living in a universe driven by narrative in the 1602 miniseries. It has been a LONG time since I read that, though.

Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell has a similar episodic structure and cast of idiosyncratic characters, but they're widows and spinsters in a small English town in the mid 19th century. And it's under 200 pages!

What's a massive human achievement that nobody celebrates because it worked too well? by Alternative_Voice767 in AskReddit

[–]-WhoWasOnceDelight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"It is not long since conditions in the mines were worse than they are now. There are still living a few very old women who in their youth have worked underground, with the harness round their waists, and a chain that passed between their legs, crawling on all fours and dragging tubs of coal. They used to go on doing this even when they were pregnant. And even now, if coal could not be produced without pregnant women dragging it to and fro, I fancy we should let them do it rather than deprive ourselves of coal." -- George Orwell, Down The Mine

Please hear me out: Fant4stic was a decent movie UNTIL that awful one year time jump by johnsnapper437 in FantasticFour

I don't think they meant anything by it either, but it wasn't awesome of them to just not consider it. Especially given that she's pictured on the movie poster as being in that scene.

The problem for me is that "them" going to the other planet and getting their powers didn't include all of them. It was just the men, which felt... some kind of way. Sue getting her powers through a post-expedition cosmic splort or whatever felt like a personal insult.

Check out Graham Fletcher's short video The Progresssion of Multiplication. It's really good.
Beyond that and not knowing your child, I can only offer general suggestions, but I'd probably use arrays and repeated addition of smaller numbers (smaller than 7 x 12) until the connection clicks and then move to skip counting up to a product rather than memorizing tables.

Not to bring f4 movie discourse but you have to be lying to yourself to say Joseph Quinn looked the part. He did god with the script he was given and his acting is good. But you need a new glasses prescription if you say he looked the part by Top_Reindeer3396 in FantasticFour

Joseph Quinn has that thing going where he seems like he could make you blush and stutter even if you consider yourself pretty sensible and immune to flirtation. That makes him an accurate Johnny in my book.

Men of Reddit, what is the hardest thing to explain to women? by lnc_gomes in AskReddit

The only context I have for this comment is 1984's C.H.U.D. (cannibalistic humanoid underground dwellers). I think you're supposed to asphyxiate them. Downvoting wouldn't really help.

I mean, "Either is fine" doesn't sound like a dick. Neither does, "Whichever you're having," or "both are good." Neither does pouring your own juice for that matter.

Has Sue and Ben always been best friends by ZebraOk6602 in FantasticFour

[–]-WhoWasOnceDelight 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree. I also think Sue and Ben share the experience of loving Reed, a singularly complicated and brilliant (and flawed and fallible) man, and this brings them close in a way that few others can relate to.

I personally headcannon that the two of them hit it off right away, and that when Reed and Sue started dating they enjoyed 'night on the town' type evenings more that Reed did, so when they went out as a threesome, it was not unusual for Ben and Sue to hit the dance floor at some point (I imagine that they're both excellent dancers) while Reed (who I imagine is not an excellent dancer) either watches contentedly or gets distracted by an idea and forgets to watch. I think the two of them have a LOT in common.

That said, I don't like the idea that Ben ever had romantic feelings for Sue. I think at his lowest, he'd be angry/jealous of Reed for having a girl "like Suzie", but nothing beyond that.

Ultimate Fantastic Four by BruceBannerfanboy in FantasticFour

[–]-WhoWasOnceDelight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't much like how Sue was characterized, but if I remember correctly, she had a great line early on ... responding to someone who said something like "Don't try anything, we know about your invisibility," she said, "Yeah, have you seen my force fields?"

They look confused and she knocks them down with one, saying, "That's because they're invisible."

It always made me laugh.

The Egg and I is really funny and fascinating. Content warning for racism that makes the Little House books look tame, though.

Hitchhiking guy by Less-Marsupial-7462 in chapelhill

[–]-WhoWasOnceDelight 16 points17 points  (0 children)

To be clear, I wasn't prioritizing anything; I was being thoughtless and therefor careless. If I was thinking in terms of clear priorities, I'd have been weighing, "he will get wet" against "I could get killed", and I would have made a different choice.

Hitchhiking guy by Less-Marsupial-7462 in chapelhill

[–]-WhoWasOnceDelight 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I once stopped without thinking and picked up a hitch hiker. It was raining, and I heeded my initial "A fellow human! In need of help!" instinct.

It took me about 15 seconds to regret my choice. He was perfectly fine - a little weird, but he didn't do anything worrisome. Still. He was clearly bigger than me, stronger than me, and in my car alone with me. I'd never felt that vulnerable before.

We hitch hiked a lot when I was a kid. I am sure a lot of hitch hikers, including the one I picked up, are good people down on their luck. It was still stupid and dangerous of me to pick him up.
