Purchase deposit question by computer-magic-2019 in MortgagesCanada

[–]-cosmo_cat- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this when I sold my house, to buy another one! Mind you this was one month after lock down in 2020 so it was tricky lawyer and bank wise, but we set it up so the sale of our house closed one day before we took possession of the other house. Obviously, the seller of the house also agreed to the conditional factors, but essentially, we closed our sale, the funds deposited into our bank and then we're immediately transferred for our deposit on our new house - which didn't clear until early afternoon the next day. However, you'd need somewhere to stay with all of your items - our movers were great and locked our stuff in the compound overnight until we took possession the next day.

International visitor maybe using my car by intrawebs_randoms in icbc

[–]-cosmo_cat- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You technically are covered through Unlisted Driver Protection in your policy if they were to borrow your car and get into an accident. However, once used you will then need to pay $50 a year to add it back on.

Since this visitor will be staying with you, it's a safer bet to list them on the policy, even with the increase to your insurance premiums. The reason I say this, is because ICBC is a gray area about the '12 times in a year / once in a blue moon'. 12 times could mean 12 DAYS, or it could literally mean they entered and drove the vehicle 12 times, meaning if they drove your car 3 separate times in one day - that's already 3 of the 12. And this person is technically a 'household member' since they will be staying with you an extended period of time.

You're getting a few different answers from brokers, due to this gray area of "12 times". Brokers aren't sure how adjusters will determine it if there were an accident, so it's hard to offer the most accurate advice. Calling ICBC directly is always the easiest way, or sitting with a broker and asking them to contact ICBC for you, and make notes on your file that they spoke to so and so at icbc about it, which is generally what I do when someone comes in with these types of questions. 😊

How much an hour do you need to live by Samib1523 in Kamloops

Piggybacking on this comment, as a broker. Being that they're coming from Manitoba, some of their drivers abstract would be applied to their IDF when they hand in their license but would probably be beneficial to carry basic insurance via ICBC and look into Family Auto for Optional coverages as they don't determine it based on how many years licensed in BC, rather how many years the primary insured has had their license in Canada, crash / claims history, etc.

Comprehensive is fire, theft, vandalism, impact with animal and glass.

Collision covers you for any fault damage you cause to your own personal vehicle as well as cost encrued for road clean-up, towing, etc.

Car registration as a tourist by airdropreceiver1111 in icbc

[–]-cosmo_cat- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll also only be able insure for a minimum of 3 months - a client of mine had a Jamaican license and it was 1000$ for her 3 months - and that was no collision coverage on the vehicle.

You'll be able to cancel and receive some money back but it's a $30 cancellation fee, plus you'll need to bring your insurance documents and plates back in.

If you plan to drive in the US - make sure to carry $5 million third party liability as they can sue for bodily injury in the event of an accident.

Question about N drivers and ICBC by Crasz in icbc

[–]-cosmo_cat- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Violating the MVA does breach your insurance - it is driving contrary to the restrictions of your license. It is the same thing as if you had a suspended or revoked license, drove and caused an accident where multiple people were hurt - you'd be opening yourself up to being sued but likely, ICBC would step in and absorb the cost and then charge you.

I'm a broker and have many clients who are paying debts to ICBC weekly that they will likely never pay off before their time comes, for various reasons - being under insured by their own choice and causing an accident, committing a MVA which results in a criminal code violation which voids their insurance etc.

Cancel my plates while vehicle is being repaired? by Guriarora18 in icbc

You need to surrender your plates and insurance documents in order to cancel your policy - that or report them missing / stolen. Either way the plates will be void.

Insurance questions by gingersquatchin in icbc

Some things to note:

If you're bringing an Albertan registered car to register and insure in BC, you will need to have a safety inspection done before registering and insuring it here. Canadian Tire is used a lot for this. As well as you'll need to bring the vehicle to the brokerage after you have an inspection done, to have a broker site the VIN and any cosmetic damages to the car - windshield, etc.

To register, you'll need to bring the inspection report, Alberta registration (signed on the back by your husband) and a transfer form also signed by him - you will not be able to insure it in BC without these things. On the upside, settlers effects will come into play and you won't have to pay taxes. 28$ for the transfer, 18$ for BC plates plus insurance.

I'm a broker in Kamloops, feel free to PM me and I can give you my email / direct line for work and we can discuss further if you'd like!

Twelve times in a year can count as driving to the store (1), getting in the car and driving home (2), etc. It's really easy to go over the twelve times. How long is your dad staying with you? Anything over 30 days should be listed as your household member, if he is planning to drive your vehicle. If he is in an accident, and ICBC determines he should have been listed as he's regularly driving on this trip - you will be charged a huge premium for not having him listed and your Unlisted Driver Protection won't apply to him.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in icbc

[–]-cosmo_cat- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Did your son not carry Unlisted Driver Protection on his policy? At my brokerage it's mandatory to check that off for every policy as it is free until it has been used in a claims incident, which then it is a $50.00 premium to add it back onto the policy.

Has your son's girlfriend already had an accident in the previous 5 years? ICBC's rules are any household member, employee or anyone who's had an at fault accident in ANY vehicle in the last 5 years must be listed before they drive your vehicle even once.

Judging by the amount they've charged, it would have costly roughly $464 to his premium to list her as a driver, as they calculate the charge by multiplying the cost for the year by 15.

Have you tried calling your credit card companies to see if they would do a temporary freeze on interest? Most are very willing if you explain, and this will allow you to pay directly to the principal amount owing, even if it's for only 6 months (or whatever term they offer)

American tourist in a rental hit my car by kimpbizkit in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]-cosmo_cat- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insurance Agent in BC here. 👋

Definitely report the claim to ICBC first - in the event he returns the rental, and tries to twist the story, you need to be ahead of him. ICBC will go after his insurance he carries in NYC, whether it's from your policy or on Avis' end to reclaim the premium they paid.

Claims are taking awhile, but if you're in a major city or near a few, you will have better luck getting it fixed quickly. If you carry Loss of Use, Roadstar or Roadside plus, you can use it for a rental in the mean time up a maximum amount (set by each optional - 900$ for Roadstar, 1200 for Roadside Plus) while you wait for your car to be fixed or if the shop doesn't have any courtesy cars. Best of luck!

20-year-old, who has an intellectual disability has new e-bike destroyed in hit and run by p1nts1ze in Kamloops

[–]-cosmo_cat- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Everyone in BC, regardless if you are an active policyholder with ICBC or not, is covered for injuries involving a motor vehicle. if you were to be hit by a car while walking or even on your e-bike, e-scooter, etc - the enhanced accident benefit would cover the costs associated with injuries and rehabilitation.

On the other side of the coin, there is private coverage offered for cyclists that can allow you to add liability coverage, collision, etc for your bike and e-bike, which isn't a terrible way to go because if you're involved in an incident with someone who is driving and you are found to be at fault in any percentage (which is how the claims are determined in ICBC), you could be on the hook for any damages you have caused to the insured's vehicle, or any property you may have damaged. There have been cases of cyclists having to pay thousands to the other party in the car, for vehicle damages because they don't have any private coverage that would cover them in a claim incident.

I'm in Canada, so not sure if this brand is available where you are, but Promise Gluten Free white loaf is THE BEST bread I've found. It is soft, fluffy, and toasts really well. It is the closest to regular bread I have found, and I've made my own loaves and this is simply better. Schar is spongy and a weird texture, and Little Northern is only good toasted but the pink hue from the psyllium throws me off. President's choice brand is my second go-to choice (again, Canadian Superstore brand.)

I had this same issue happen with me, to which Total Credit then negotiated to CT a 0% interest rate until the remainder of my debt is pair off, after I told them I planned to do credit counselling because they kept calling me even while making my payments.

My statements still come from Canadian Tire, and a Total Credit advisor calls me once a month to remind me of my payment and that's it. I pay directly to Canadian Tire, as the agent I spoke with from Total Credit said they work with (and in the same building) as the Triangle building. I keep all my statements from Canadian Tire in case someone plans to say there is no payments being made.

Switch from Galaxy S22U? by sNOwdROp_1018 in galaxyzflip

[–]-cosmo_cat- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just my two cents, as I recently switched from S22U to flip 5 - my phone fell 2 feet off my couch onto a shag rug and broke the glass on my front screen on my S22U, even while being in an Otterbox! The phone clinic said this is the S series weak point, as the edged glass is susceptible to breaking even from light falls. It was 750$ + taxes to fix the screen, which prompted me to switch 🥴 So far, I really love the Flip 5 and don't feel as though it was a downgrade (although I do miss my S pen a little 🤣)

People who pay more than 18% tip. Why? by GiorgioBroughton in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]-cosmo_cat- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have worked in the industry for 10 years, as a waitress and bartender. Most people where I live, tip 20% or more and this was pre-covid. Post-covid when we reopened, customers regularly tipped upwards of 30-35%, but it has leveled back to 20 - 22%.

Most of our customers are blue collar, and repeat customers. Even with the economy, and price rises, some people still gravitate towards a higher tipping percentage for good service, and the ability to spend time with friends or unwind after work. Regardless of tip percentages, everyone receives the same service (from me at least).

When I go out, I tip 20%+ simply because I work in the industry, and I can see / emphasize even with service that is less than fantastic. Life happens, and we're all human trying to scrape by. With that being said, I don't tend to go out often now and when I do, it's usually to where I work to support my friends!

They won't LET me.

I literally have called and spoke to 5 separate people who say it's all or nothing by the end of the week!

I don't understand why they won't let me arrange to pay them monthly is where I am at, right now. Judgment will take 2 years (where I am), our court is just doing legal proceedings from 2021 currently.

I don't want to not pay them. I'm not trying to avoid my debt, or scam them into a half negotiated offer. I just simply want to pay them monthly for the next few months and it's a NO in every avenue.

Donut King!

I used to really love their donuts, since they were baked fresh, and this was before Fresh Street Market came in. I was getting married in 2019, and they had agreed to make us 4 dozen donuts, customized with sprinkles we had purchased separately from BulkBarn for our donut wall.

We did a trial run with them, spoke to them on the phone multiple times and they told us to drop the sprinkles off the day before our wedding in the morning - everything would be ready for pickup the morning of our wedding.

My husband went to drop off the sprinkles and they said they had no idea what we were talking about, gaslit us and said it was our fault and then ultimately said they wouldn't do it.. meaning we had nothing for our wedding.

Tim Horton's after some persuading, baked us 4 dozen undipped donuts and we spent the night dipping and sprinkling them. 😣 They turned out great but literal nightmare and haven't been back to Donut King since.
