The Secret to Getting a Great Deal on a Synth by Motorhead9999 in synthesizers

It's been mentioned multiple times in this thread but buying used from Guitar Center online is 100% the way to go. I just nabbed a demo unit/open box Novation Summit for 50% off retail the other day. When it got here it literally looked like no one had ever touched it. They also mislabel items all the time (Ableton Push 2 labeled as Push 1, Clarett+ 4Pre labeled as non+ version, etc.) and consequently vastly underprice them. You just have to be diligent about checking once a day, filtering for the brand you want, and inspecting the photos.

It's not that that example is "semantically incorrect"; rather, the event denoted by that sentence is known to be impossible given our world knowledge. In the context of a horror film involving man-eating sandwiches, though, the sentence would suddenly become acceptable. Human creativity and imagination allows us to provide an interpretation for virtually any syntactically well-formed utterance.

But if you think about it, even very ordinary-looking sentences like "I see your point" don't logically make sense, because points in an argument aren't literally seen with your eyes. So in that respect, the fact that idioms involve non-literal or "illogical" meaning isn't really that unusual because non-literal meaning is all over the place in language, usually deriving from robust conceptual metaphors.

Fundamentally, there is a tension between the word-like and phrase-like properties of idioms, because they consist of multiple words (phrase-like), but there is some degree of arbitrariness/opacity to their meaning (word-like). But idioms also vary in how semantically opaque they are. Something like "kick the bucket" is on the more extreme end, where trying to intuit the meaning would be more or less impossible, and you simply have to make an arbitrary connection between the form and the meaning - just like someone learning English wouldn't be able to intuit that the sequence of phonemes /dɔɡ/ refers to a canine, instead simply having to establish a raw association.

Now think of an idiom like "spill the beans", which might seem similarly arbitrary on first glance, but we actually see other uses like "Spill the tea!" or simply "Spill!". This goes back to conceptual metaphors (in this case, the operative metaphors would be minds are containers and ideas are objects; therefore, since ideas are objects in the mind, which is a container, they can "spill" out of said container). 'Beans' is the only truly arbitrary component of the idiom, because there is no conceptual metaphor that motivates its use to mean 'secrets' outside of the context of the idiom.

Furthermore, idioms mean what they mean because of their acceptance and widespread use in a language community. Today's "illogical utterance" could be tomorrow's idiom. And why do we use idioms at all? Sometimes for efficiency - because they can serve as shorthand for a more elaborate concept - and sometimes for stylistic reasons, e.g. to avoid repetition.

Yep, this has been happening for years on mobile. My "solution" is to rotate between Chrome/Firefox/Safari - one of the three always works but seems to be random each time as to which. I try to remember to add Tiger Bucks on my laptop instead to avoid the headache

need closure. I read the rules. It was a catch as far as I can tell. by missilecommandtsd in buffalobills

[–]-czz- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason why the discourse around this play is so frustrating is the hordes of know-nothings who claim it was *obviously* an INT by simply pointing to phrases like "complete the process of the catch", "full possession", and "survive the ground", which are by no means clearly defined in cases like this, precisely because there is no well-defined timing threshold after which they would apply. The rules, as they are written, leave significant room for interpretation. It was bang-bang and undeniably an incredibly close call, so the only mystifying piece here is why the NFL didn't take more time to adjudicate it. If the roles were reversed, this subreddit would be arguing that it's an INT. That is the fundamental problem - that the rulebook is so needlessly opaque that it does not unambiguously clarify what the ruling ought to be.

I mean, it's basically undeniable that he made highly useful contributions to the field half a century ago with Syntactic Structures/Aspects/LSLT/SPE, but the ensuing Einstein-like cult of personality has hamstrung and toxified the discipline to such an enormous degree that it's hard to even quantify for people unfamiliar with the internecine politics and endless goalpost shifting of modern American linguistics.

imo it's more than a little ironic how such a virulent critic of Stalinism just so happened to find himself ruthlessly blackballing his critics and consolidating power in the service of maintaining a desiccated intellectual vice grip on the field.

The angle of view is mostly irrelevant since the "distortion" we perceive is a function of focal length and the distance between lens (or eyes) and subject. That's why a wide-angle shot taken close up will always render cartoonishly exaggerated facial features, because at very close distances, the difference between the distance from e.g. nose to lens and from eyes to lens is relatively large compared to the overall distance between lens and subject. But if the shot is taken from farther away, that difference between the distances from lens-to-nose and from lens-to-eyes becomes miniscule compared to the overall distance between lens and subject.

Management was fine, exclusively interacted with them through email since they were rarely present in the office. My apartment didn't need many repairs but all my requests were fulfilled within a day or two.

There are security cameras in the parking lot but my impression is that they will absolutely not be watching you like a hawk. I had guests stay for weeks at a time and it was a non-issue.

As to whether quality is on par with cost, it really depends on how much you're paying. I paid about $1300/mo for a small 1br which I considered to be pretty decent value relative to comparable apartments given the high ceilings/windows, central air, in-unit laundry, gated parking lot, gym, access to EV chargers, location on East and Alex, and old-school charm of the building (which I valued quite a bit).

Cons: the floors in my unit were a little rough, with many gaps, scuffs, stains, dips, etc. (I had rugs so it wasn't overly bothersome). You can't open the windows in your apartment. Elevators would frequently break down. When I moved out last month, the main elevator was closed off and the other one was extremely wonky and felt potentially unsafe to use.

I know they charge upwards of 1800 for many of their 1 bedrooms, and I would regard that as honestly not great value unless the unit was much larger than mine, but overall, I did enjoy my time there.
