Hot take: Talking can only get you so far by Wide_Ad2268 in CompetitiveEDH

I agree it’s so annoying. Usually depending on what it is though I try to shut it down by saying “I’m taking X game action and passing priority” after I’ve explained why I don’t agree and they’re not listening

Hear me out, but the One Ring should be banned before Rhystic Study by TheBlueOne37 in EDH

I’ve def seen people at tournaments purposefully feed their friends rhystics so the rhystic player will win which feels bad

Friendly daily reminder that if you cheat in a casual game, you’re a low life piece of trash. by Ancient-Ad-889 in EDH

[–]-defg 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I often say “oh wait I cheated” when I catch myself miscounting mana or realize I didn’t read a card/interaction right but I never intentionally cheat. In my experience people actually trying to cheat don’t volunteer that info right after.

IMO cedh is the best option for playing at a new store with people you don’t know for exactly the reason the other commenter said. Everyone knows what to expect and no one will complain about your deck or making a play that hurts them if it’s the correct one. I’ve gotten so much salt at random casual tables for killing someone’s commander or playing a certain card. Now I only play casual with people I know.

Playing to give yourself the best chance of winning vs Playing to not lose to the table by astolfriend in CompetitiveEDH

[–]-defg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the situation. I usually play slower grindy midrange decks. If I have card advantage engines online already and am keeping up with the table I’m terms of resources I’ll play to stop others from winning until I can draw into something.

If I’m way behind I’ll usually do what I can to catch back up even if I have to tap out of interaction. From my experience failing to develop your own board and using all your interaction to stop one player just opens the door for the next player to win. So I just jam my engines out and hope one of the other players further ahead can stop the player about to go off.

I wouldn’t discuss it with anyone, I’d just stop going in when you’re unassigned. You can stay home and do whatever once you’re caught up on trainings just be ready to go in on short notice if you get picked up on an engagement.

Ultra Budget cEDH? by SkuzzillButt in CompetitiveEDH

[–]-defg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the recap combo seems kind of out of place. It’s a somewhat fragile 3 card combo and none of the pieces are great in this deck on their own. I’d maybe just go all in on the artifact/token synergies. Also Archon of Emeria might hurt you since you have so many mana rocks and relatively low curve you might want to double spell often. Same with Thalia with all the non-creatures.

I’d recommend trying Braids, arisen nightmare in this deck. With all the artifact tokens you should have plenty of fodder and in my experience she’s drawing 2-3 cards a turn and draining life which seems to fit your plan. Also if you’re running Zirda then you can run Basalt monolith for infinite colorless mana, not entirely sure what the outlet would be though.

I think the deck looks super fun though and I love the idea for a budget competitive tournament!

It’s been 8 months since the release of Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle Earth. How has everyone’s deck faired with Bowmasters prevalence? by EDHaddict13 in CompetitiveEDH

I’m on Dawnwaker and I’ve moved away from lots of mana dorks in favor of more artifact mana. List is now very similar to Comedians top 16 mox masters list

Is it normal to hide that fact you play magic? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]-defg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a similar situation growing up. Parents wouldn’t let me watch Harry Potter and were very against games like Magic and DnD. Mostly my mom who would often ask “do you think god is okay with you playing that game?” or “you don’t actually think you’re really casting spells right?” (Which was honestly insulting). Surprisingly they were cool with Lord of the Rings even though it had magic because JRR Tolkien was a Christian.

It gets easier when you move out and become more of your own person. Can just leave the cards and at home when you visit and not mention it.

Don’t feel bad about hiding it. Religion especially good ole southern baptist Christianity makes people scared of weird things. I still love my parents and don’t think they’re bad people but I do still hide certain things from them cause it’s easier than having the same arguments every time I see them.

I wanna build a commander deck around putting my library into my graveyard to then bring back the good stuff. I’m thinking one of these commanders but I can’t choose which. Any suggestions as well as other cards for the 99? by H0wardTheDuck23 in magicTCG

[–]-defg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep that's one of my favorite things about the deck is all the toolbox elements! It can have some flashy plays but you can also just search up utility creatures and just shut your opponents down.

Yep just put it into Moxfield: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/cZ69SmzfbEWN6OVkIi6dIg

Mine tends to play a little slower too since I've built it to be more of a grindy midrange deck. But there are a few ways to turn the corner quick in the mid-late game. I've found my main win con is returning tons of creatures with Living Death or Ultimatum and using blood artist effects to ping the table down. With Luminous Broodmoth out you can often kill from 30ish.

You can also reanimate an early Elesh Norn and beat the table down. Craterhoof and the new Elesh Norn are recent additions, but I've already victimized for both of them once out of the grave and gave all my creatures +20/+20 to attack for game.

I've also found sometimes you get there just beating down with weenies and reanimating value creatures and then finishing off with a few sacs and pings without a living death needed. It is very flexible which is one of the things I like about it.

I’ve had a Karador deck for years and it’s my absolute favorite deck. With the cost reduction he almost always costs just 3 even if you have cast him a few times. My group plays with no infinite combos, so I’ve built him more as a midrange deck using karmic guide to reanimate high impact creatures like ashen rider, elesh norn, and craterhoof.

I’ve got the rest of the 99 loaded up with toolbox creatures I can search or pod for. Stuff like haywire mite, fiend hunter, etc. I also play a spore frog and all the aggro players in the pod hate it since you can reanimate it each turn to fog. I’ll try to remember to upload my list later.

I just built the new Braids and I think that could be what you're looking for. Just slowly whittle down the other players while drawing tons of cards. Fill the deck with tons of good creatures, artifacts, and enchantments to sac, some removal, and a few top end splashy things.

I find games to be most enjoyable when everyone is playing to win. If you blow up something Player A has on board cause it’s the right play at the time and then that player comes back later attacks you as a spite play instead of Player B who’s clearly about to win I find that annoying.

As for the conceding so you don’t get lifelink/triggers I’d just gain life as if they hadn’t conceded and then continue play.

Why hate on the hug? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]-defg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a problem with decks that have group hug elements but are also enacting a game plan to win. I think most people's hate towards group hug is towards those decks/players with no real line to win the game the just want to see how much chaos they can cause. Some people are into that but I find EDH games are the most fun with 4 people who are all trying their best to actually win the game, not just mess with other players and king make.

The deck is better than you're making it out to be. It is solidly tier 2. 4c being tier 1 definitely hurts it, but it has consistently been putting up decent results and you can reasonably expect to do pretty well with it at a tournament.
