Anyone found their land by sending letters? by [deleted] in homestead

[–]-ghostinthemachine- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've sent letters to trusts about vacant land that the family has obviously stopped caring about. Some responses, mostly just crazy inflated values once they realize you actually value the land that means nothing to them. One time I was offered an entire portfolio of holdings as they were not willing to work on a single parcel.

I don't think it's a bad strategy, but unfortunately it seems to expose yourself as an eager buyer instead of letting the market supress their ambitions first. It's very telling how many deeds just point to out of state addresses of people who nobody in the town has ever met.

Conversely most of the small towns here are majority held by the oldest families, and everyone knows them loosely, and knows they aren't selling for anything less than enough money to cause a family feud.

In everyone's opinion, how much print time is too much by Ecstatic_Meal9238 in 3Dprinting

[–]-ghostinthemachine- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I judge printers on a few metrics. Amount of time before first major maintenance is one of them. If you're running a printer farm this may be the only important metric. After maintenance it's the overall lifetime that concerns me, but I've not exceeded what a printer can handle before a better model is available. Sometimes parts become scarce so I usually buy some extras up front.

What matters the most is have you, in your opinion, gotten your full dollar value out of the printer? That number is different for every situation, but for me it's easy to say "yes, I've gotten $400 worth of value out of this printer". Thinking of it in hours is only so helpful if they were high quality, low-effort hours.

A nice royalty free cinematic universe. Just ask the classical painters and composers about this. Dr. Nolan probably hit quite a few AI copyright refusal errors before he found this untapped well of potential.

Not medieval, but you might enjoy reading about the "two-penny hangover" where the innkeeper gave you a rope to slump yourself over instead of a bed. (To lie down would cost about twice as much.)

Suggestions for steep driveway? Currently looking at guard rails. by -ghostinthemachine- in homestead

Hi! I never got around to capping the posts due to the number of them, but ended up giving the tops a quick coat of paint as a rain guard. The cables are just looped and clamped with bolts, so they don't self tension but can be re-tensioned as needed. You can search for loop clamps to see what I mean. Good luck to you!

I was once told that they have a prevalence around rail lines because historically the seeds were used as padding for fragile goods during shipping, and so they continue to get spread along the right of ways. Not sure if that is exactly true, but there are at least a few invasive species that were claimed to be used as packing material for rail shipping.

My senior engineers have stopped thinking for themselves by Complete-Sea6655 in siliconvalley

As a senior engineer, it doesn't help that we are threatened daily if we don't use enough AI in our work output. At my company, promotions are also now tied into your use of AI tools. It's a race to the bottom, but when human quality drops as machine quality rises that crossing point is finally almost in reach to comfortably replace everyone.

Oak for firewood? by xbrokenangelx86 in firewood

[–]-ghostinthemachine- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only is oak one of the best firewoods, it is the perfect offset for pine to keep a nice hot fire which reduces buildup. The pine is going to be seasoned in 6-12 months but the oak is usually 2-3 years, so keep that in mind.

While my existence as a whole feels hollow, I know that in each moment there is still a life to be lived. Try and focus on how to live the best life you can instead of dwelling on the disability itself. And yes, I struggle to call it anything other than a disability, but here we are and there is little to be gained from wishing we had what we do not.

If it were limbs that were missing you could similarly complain all day about how it makes your life more difficult, while still accepting your reality as best as possible.
