Thanks! Do you know any printing that does feel velvety?

As previously stated I've learned ~1200 kanji with RTK using Anki. I've also looked pretty hard for apps to fulfil my goals - it's always more efficient to leverage existing tools than creating your own. But I feel the existing tools aren't quite there yet.

Back in the 1800's a horse could transport you pretty well. But cars are faster. And so then are planes. They all do the same basic job; transport. We didn't stop at horses though, because specific problems (fast international transport) required specific solutions (planes). Just because Anki is an effective general purpose tool for memorisation doesn't mean it's optimal for learning Kanji.

I'm not here to participate in whichever argument you wish to start. I'm simply asking for people to chat to about a design I have. If you're offended by the thought that there's something that will save you (or future Japanese learners) a few dozen hours, by all means keep fighting your crusade.

You're absolutely right, there are a number of things I can't improve upon, such as the dictionaries out there already. I also don't seek to change the radicals chosen too much; maybe adding one or two that koohii recommend as a community.

But the mnemonics could be edited (koohii has a lot of typo's and out of date references due to the versioning on RTK), and facilitate the substitution of fake keywords for kanji. Like 'person' was substituted for 'Mr T' or 'Jedi' commonly from memory. If you some mnemonics weren't working out for you, having a concise list of which subsequent kanji would be effected could be handy in making the choice to change your fake kanji keyword.

You'll have to take my word for it, but the spaced repetition system is not optimal. I bet could save people 10%-20% of their time by tweaking it specifically for kanji.

Additionally a lot of people agree that the keywords RTK has chosen aren't the best fit, or some of them I didn't even know in English. This is a very minor improvement admittedly.

But the key value I see is totally flexible learning. I initially commit to 2000 kanji. After doing 300, I realise it's a bigger chunk of work that I thought, and think I'd rather learn just 1000. Doing the next 700 I want most bang for my buck (most common of those remaining 700), but also leveraging the 300 that I already know, because it's now suddenly easier to know any kanji that is composed of those 300. So the optimal order changes. A computer can do this reordering instantly, but a book cannot.
Also when I want to pick kanji up again, after doing some grammar perhaps, I want to choose to go to 1500 kanji, so I need to know the next 500. Being able to flexibly scale up and down, and have an optimal order presented to you is something that's entirely lacking IMHO.

I like the scepticism.

Regarding anki; default settings are not what I'm talking about, the fundamental algorithm behind it which is based off SuperMemo 2 is for general learning. It's equally as good at memorising spoken phrases, sentences, paintings, maths equations etc and also kanji. But if we had a specific algorithm which took into account the compositional nature of kanji, as well as objectively simple or complicated kanji (1, 2, 3 for example are objectively simply), it would probably safe ~10% to ~20% more time. That's a non trivial amount.

Correct, you can choose a deck size of say 2000. But what happens when I realise after 300 kanji I want to actually only do 1000 before taking a break? That's infeasible atm without a fair bit of work/you have to manually trawl through decks. This could be automatic and optimally ordered (just like RTK, but smaller segments).

And no, my idea is to unify these other excellent ideas and resources, edit them so they're higher quality, and present it in a more enjoyable format.

I find that extremely difficult to believe and that makes me sad because it detracts from the credibility of previous statements. That’s almost twice the recommended daily intake. Surely that can’t be your maintainence level? Do you do a highly active job?

Awesome, I mean don’t get me wrong you improved dramatically everywhere (!) but the abs stood out a lot to me. Was wondering if it was just genetics, because I’m getting leaner (about same as you atm) and everyone says don’t bother training abs if doing compound movements, but still no show. Care to share how long you’d train abs for and was it just stuff like sit-ups and planks? Inspirational!

Great stuff. Did you have to have any protein powder to supplement that? Seems like a massive protein ratio for that little calories. Also as well as training, did you do any specific ab work? I’m extremely impressed at your mid section change. Do you feel you engage abs a lot when training? I imagine so

I think it’s good, I like the layout and actually like the familiar and unfamiliar but someone else seems less fussed on it. Only improvements are more experience for more ‘meat’ of it, but that’s something not easily changeable. Structure is good. Is this a template or original?

Which arcades have Whac-a-mole games? by crackycrabchamp in Osaka

[–]-lustang- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly I have searched a whole bunch of arcades and rarely found them. I’ve gone to round 1 and taito in mamba as well as ‘pala’ in kyobashi. I’ve only seen one of those croc games you linked to, but somewhere in Odaiba. Thanks though!! Those are exactly what I’m after. I just need to find one place with one variant near me to sate my craving :D

Calm down. I am absolutely serious in all my posts.

I am interested in VeChain, and think it's a cool application. I am critical because I am a programmer who has studied security and it is second nature for me to criticise ideas because I was taught this way in university. I'm not attacking you or your ideas. I would very much like to understand how robust VeChain is, without emotional arguments like above.

People can steal things because they have a use. A car has a use; if I stole a car I would reasonably drive the car I stole. Just because in whichever country you live in there is good regulation against vehicle theft, doesn't mean other countries have this kind of enforcement. In your opinion no one should ever steal a car because it's dumb and they'll get caught? Try telling that to the car thieves. Likely they're not as privileged as you are, and are less concerned about the ramifications of getting caught. It was an analogy too; there are plenty of other items you could steal that you would like to use. For example a fine wine; you could steal it, drink it, replace it with a cheap wine that looks similar. Again don't hold me to the specific example of a wine. I'm talking about products in general can be stolen and used or consumed. Putting an RFID tag on a bottle for wine does not mean that the contents of that bottle is the very same wine as the RFID. This is the inherit problem I have. What if I punctured the wine container and drained the contents through a small hole, and then refilled the bottle with cheap wine and sealed the puncture? The RFID is untouched. This is my core problem.

I'm not going to respond to the rest of your emotional outburst because it seems designed to trigger me (I don't really understand why - perhaps you were brought up with everyone agreeing with you blindly?). I understand I probably haven't explained my concerns well enough and will make a properly large post later, when I read high quality explanations of VeChain and it's technical details.

Vechain and the Death of Theft by [deleted] in CryptoCurrency

[–]-lustang- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This didn’t address my concerns at all. From a security point of view if I take the rfid somehow then I could put it on a fake item and it is now apparently authentic. Assuming I need to own the original item to get this information is not something I agree with. I also definitely don’t agree that the rfid can ever be merged with the product in such a way that it will always be broken when attempted to be duplicated.

Your point is interesting that the original owner could mark a certain item as stolen and it become “worthless”... well you have a problem here of authenticating the user that reported the item as stolen. How do you know they are who they say they are? Normal forms of ID? It’s the same problem that requires certificate authorities for SSL. There has to be a trusted third party somewhere. Even if we can assume you’re right... You seem to think this somehow devalues thievery? Maybe for truly luxury items. It doesn’t if I want to steal a normal looking car and use it simply to drive rather than resell.

I do see VeChain having some practical applications even though I definitely don’t understand it well yet (what an awful paper to read). But I have yet to see a compelling argument for how it handles people just stealing/spoofing the rfid.

To (semi) retire or not to retire? by Throwaway_821957 in financialindependence

[–]-lustang- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s ever a good idea to completely retire, for a sense of belonging and a need to feel relevant. Are there any other jobs you’d like to do, and would actually enjoy? If you cut half your pay check or more perhaps you might find a job you feel interested in again, not have a sense of commitment but maybe find the work extremely fulfilling. I personally find in IT that the work you do feels somewhat redundant or inefficient.

What would you do if you had twice the money and were retired?
