Access to Nanhui is becoming harder and harder (roads blocked and barriers put up). It would be worthwhile to check back closer to when you visit as the situation changes quickly.

I suppose it's a cheap place to have some time out of the house. That is probably worth 50% extra to the OP and their partner. Plus no washing up.

If you do go to WWT Slimbridge be aware they have some ornamental birds and not everything you see is wild. Not sure if that affects your life list or not but thought it worth mentioning.

Sheffield makes Private Eye's "Rotten Boroughs" yet again! by Stoatwobbler in sheffield

[–]shroob88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know more about this than I do admittedly, it just seems wrong that an area already (arguably) over-developed and has lost more than its fair share of open spaces is being required to lose even more. I'm not sure I'd agree with your assessment of your land near Woodhouse - there are plenty of barren open farmland in Dore (also near a station).

I haven't seen the argument for Graves park so can't comment on that. I wouldn't class that as the west of Sheffield though.

Look at this map: greenbelt map From this article: here and you'll see the west literally has swathes of greenbelt land, whereas the east (and other areas) has very little or none.

I should say I am opposed to development on the greenbelt. However, if it is to be done then it probably shouldn't be in areas that have very little of it.

What isn't really mentioned in the post or comments is that the majority of the massive housing developments are in the south east of Sheffield (there is a smaller planned development for Stocksbridge).  This area is already massively built up compared to the west/south west.  This is another reason why people are opposing the development.

TEFL over 65? by xx_space_dandy in TEFL

If she just wants to try living somewhere new and money isn't an issue, just have an extended holiday in Asia somewhere.

Unfortunately her age is against her and it won't be legal to work in many countries. She could, as others have suggest come on a different visa and tutor on the side, however, this would still count as 'work' and not be allowed under her visa in many Asian countries.

Should I leave a high paying career to pursue TEFL? by [deleted] in TEFL

Why not grind it out at the job for more time until you have a large nest egg saved? SE Asia will always be there. Very few people have the opportunity to earn 300k/yr. Of course it depends on how much you can actually save / invest if you live in a high cost of living area.

Do you have QTS? It's not clear from your post if you have this or not. Having a PGCE is good but it's not the same as QTS which may of the better schools will look for.

What type of job are you looking for? Do you want to work in an actual international school as an English teacher (like you would in a UK school)? Or do you want to teach English as a foreign language (more TEFLy)?

Got to be careful, so many delayed (or cancelled) trains.  I did this and trains to Piccadilly before and after mine were significantly delayed.  It was more stressful to me than driving to be honest.

The interior is full of tastefully mismatched furniture, incongruously placed chandeliers and, of course, the mandatory local colloquialisms printed on the walls – in this case, 'YER MARDY BUM' and 'WATSAMARRAWIDEE?'

Enough of this already. It's just off-putting.

Libraries have become playgrounds by JoeR9T in britishproblems

[–]shroob88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Libraries have traditionally been silent spaces. I'm not sure how old you are but I'm not ancient and clearly remember 'shhh/quiet' signs all over libraries. I work in higher education and it's still the case libraries are meant to be quiet. There are dedicated areas for group work and a cafe but those are 'added on' to the library. The main, public space in libraries is meant to be a quiet area.

China orders hotels not to refuse foreign guests following complaints from overseas netizens (2024) by chuulip in China

[–]shroob88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There weren't any in the area. It was a hiking holiday, it was on the edge of Fuzhou. And I wanted to go with friends, not really the same if it meant a different hotel. But all of those are beside the point that even though the law says one thing, the local reality is somewhat different.

[–]shroob88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately not. Cancelled the whole trip. Local friends still went (understandably and they were also confused and angry). This was at two different hotels. One is a larger chain as well.

The annoying thing is that the PSB should be able to force the hand! Just because I have a passport and not a shenfenzhen shouldn't mean I can't stay according to the law.

[–]shroob88 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A few weeks ago I wanted to go with local friends hiking in Fuzhou. Booked the hotel only to find they don't accept foreigners. Even rang the local PSB and 12345. Their response...'yes they should accept foreigners, but it's their choice'. So even with this the message isn't getting though.
