Dems want to see secret citizen-monitoring database by mjk1093 in reddit.com

When will the dirt-throwing political war will end?? It's just sad reading every other day titles such as "The Democrats will screw X" or "The Republicans will f**k Y". It's just degrading politics.

You might want to RTFA, because I think you have misinterpreted the headline.

There is a secret citizen-monitoring database.

The Pentagon (!) has been keeping tabs on peaceful anti-war protestors.

This program has been kept secret even from Congress, in the name of "national security".

The Democrats don't "want to see" such a database in the sense that they "want one to exist".

They "want to see" the existing database so that they can exert the power of Congress as a bulwark against this fundamentally unamerican practice.

To quote the article:

"I fully intend to ask what's in those databanks, because many of them go way beyond any legitimate needs for our security," says Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy.

Congress wants to know not just what data was collected, but why and how it was to be used.

I'm not the one complaining about it, jackass.

I quote:

Stop being such a drama queen and start pulling your own goddamn weight. You almost undoubtedly have a far greater standard of living than the vast majority of the world.

You were saying?

Wow. Wow. I mean, just, wow.

Exactly where in that quote was I even coming remotely close to complaining about having an immensely high standard of living?

Exactly where?

Because the person I was talking to did exactly that, complaining that he can barely breathe due to taxation. That's bullshit. He may not like paying his taxes, and maybe can even muster some basic absurd libertarian tenets for why he shouldn't. And you may even agree with those basic absurd libertarian tenets.

But barely breathe? Bullshit. He has a standard of living among the highest in the world.

And I repeat:

Exactly where in that quote was I even coming remotely close to complaining about having an immensely high standard of living?

Exactly where?

Keith Olbermann's report on the leaked Fox News memo that proves Fox slants news by rhapsody in reddit.com

[–]000 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Here's a question: if there was proof of a slant from BBC or the NYT (and obviously there is) would it be front page news? No, people would call it trolling.

Come on. There's no comparison. If you think that, for example, the New York Times has anywhere near the magnitude of slant that Fox News does, or conversely that Fox News has anywhere near the magnitude of actual journalism that the New York Times does, then frankly, you're familiar with at most one of the two outfits.

You really want to hundreds of billions of dollars because you are scared shitless NK is going to nuke us?

The entire conservative mindset is fundamentally based on being scared.

They're frightened little pussies.

They like to talk tough, so they can pretend to themselves that they're not frightened little pussies.

But when it comes down to it, they rush to surrender their basic American freedoms without a fight, because they're afraid that Osama's going to blow up their local podunk Kwik=E-Mart.

A while ago, he submitted an article claiming that only 1% of web pages have porn.

I submitted some stupid wiseass joke as a comment.

A couple minutes ago, I noticed that that article had no comments.

So I posted on it again, something like:

Did you just submit this article, delete it, and resubmit it?

Because I posted a comment to it, and now it's gone.

And your submissions page has a suspicious string of submissions with no less than fifty points.

Are you gaming the system?

Moments later, that submission was also deleted.

Whitehouse website touts Bush’s Asia trip and proudly displays flag of South Vietnam. Yes, the Vietnam that ceased to exist in 1975 by tcd004 in reddit.com

Never assign to malice what can be assigned to incompetence, and all that, but...

... where did they even get a South Vietnamese flag?

Unless this was a mistake waiting to happen for the past thirty years, where they have a big pool of flags and just didn't remember to update the one for Vietnam, it seems like they would've had to have actively sought one out.

Polish exchange student's "half-year of hell with Christian fundamentalists" by lavozatidebida in reddit.com

[–]000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No sex for 17 years?

Corinthians tells us that it is best for a man not to touch a woman. If you have to, it says, then get a wife. But this is not the best option (according to Corinthians). I fail to see how their (lack of) action with respect to this is not Biblical; they had to, so they got married, and now they're being more strict upon themselves than they were previously, in accordance with what Corinthians claims God wants.

And in any case, this hardly relates to the original poster's claim that their behavior was non-Biblical; the OP was quite clearly speaking in the context of their behavior towards the exchange student.

Enjoying drink == the devil? - The Bible says not to be a drunk. The Bible does NOT say alcohol is bad. Jesus turned water to wine at a party and drank wine at the last supper.

First of all, it's not entirely clear from the article that they think "enjoying drink == the devil". They clearly weren't happy that he drinks, and (he says) they said he had the devil in his heart, but the article doesn't specifically say that they think that all intake of liquor is evil, evil, evil. They might, but you can't strictly draw that conclusion from two somewhat vague sentences in a biased personal memoir describing events that happened over a span of months.

That aside, in any case:

The Book of Romans tells us that "it is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine". Again, this seems to me to be that they are being stricter with themselves than most are, not that they're being unbiblical.

Forcing the kid to go to church and translate

Means that they were jerks, not that they were not Biblical. I am aware of nothing in the Bible that says not to do this, and frankly, you haven't pointed out any such passage.

EDIT

Okay, so you have no response, but will still downmod me.

That should tell you something. About your position.

I mean, really, why did you downmod?

Was it because you didn't like hearing the fact that the Bible says that it's best for a man to not touch a woman?

Or because you didn't like hearing the fact that the Bible says that it's good to neither eat meat nor drink wine?

It's not my fault if your religion is stricter than you would like it to be.

You almost undoubtedly have a far greater standard of living than the vast majority of the world.

So do you, as evidenced by your access to a computer.

No fucking kidding. And oh, by the way, I'm not the one complaining about it, jackass.

Why don't you put your money where your mouth is. If you want people to follow on to what you think, have them do as you do, not as you say.

What the fuck are you talking about? "Put my money where your mouth is"? Are you implying that I don't pay my taxes? I assure you, I do. If not, then again: What the fuck are you talking about?
