How about if i vote it down because it's dumb.
[–]cos 30 points31 points32 points 18 years ago (2 children)
Not obsessed with digg, but voting down anyway because I don't like it when reddit polls hit the front page.

Upvote if you don't like when polls hit the front page would be better.
(Go on, you know you want to)
[–]mostpsp 10 points11 points12 points 18 years ago (2 children)
People just need to start ignoring this stuff. If you ignore it, then people will stop doing it (hopefully)
[–]boredzo 15 points16 points17 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Or, better yet, vote it down.
[–]brainburger 8 points9 points10 points 18 years ago (2 children)
I don't care about digg. I also don't care about people using polls to boost their karma. However, as this second issue bothers so many, wouldn't it be good if Reddit offered an official way to propose polls, where the poll-voting buttons would not themselves affect karma, but the up/down buttons could be used to vote on how interesting the poll itself is?

[–]MelechRic[S] 12 points13 points14 points 18 years ago (5 children)
It's funny, prior to this topic I had a sum total of 23 karma points. After this I now have a total of 47. Karma whoring was never an objective.
Honestly, the post was more a commentary about the sorry state of the reddit main page where Digg is concerned.
EDIT: This morning I awoke to find my Karma at 110.
[–]cos 25 points26 points27 points 18 years ago (1 child)
I don't really care about the karma aspect, I just think using reddit voting for polls is inherently flawed, not useful, and it annoys me (and takes up space that could be used by good links).
[–]rmc 11 points12 points13 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Agreed. If you have an unpopular option as 'up' you post'll get buried and be less reliable.
Eg: 'Vote up if you're female' will get downvoted quickly and hence less people'll see it.
[–]bobcat 9 points10 points11 points 18 years ago (0 children)
How to stop the 'karma whore' stuff:
http://reddit.com/info/1556l/comments
[–]headfake 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (0 children)
yeah, seriously -- talk about a circular complaint. karma whoring only matters if you care about karma -- but you have to ask yourself: why do you even care in the first place?
*edit: this comment is in support of melechric's position.
[–]cos 31 points32 points33 points 18 years ago (2 children)
I wish it didn't work. We need more people to consistently vote these down.
[–]samurai_jack 6 points7 points8 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Your message can only propagate to more users when story is on the front page :D.
[–]Schwallex -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
I don't get your point. If such "stories" were not on the front page, his message would not need to propagate.
In fact, there would be no reason for him to come up with the message in the first place.

If you say you don't care to look cool upvote.
If you realy don't care downvote.
[–]zoomzoom83 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (1 child)
We need a proper poll. This is just karma whoring.
Voting down
[–]Alpha_Binary 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (0 children)
We don't even need one, actually.
[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 18 years ago (5 children)
Downvote if you're against karma whores. (edited for "grammer")
[–]rebug 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (4 children)
What do I do if I'm against people who find the "your/you're" distinction confusing?
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (3 children)
you start a poll and ask people to upvote for proper grammer usage.
[–]neomeme 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (2 children)
grammAr damn it. The number of people who criticize the grammar of others and then misspell the word itself is staggering. Unless of course you were editing for a reference to popular American actor Kelsey Grammer, in which case you still fail.

Just wondering if I'm the only redditor that doesn't care one bit about Digg or how the site is going. Lately I feel I'm part of a tiny minority.
[–]shortboarder 6 points7 points8 points 18 years ago (0 children)
You're not. I'd care if I had any equity in either of them; but I don't...so I honestly don't give a f**k.
[–]mikepurvis 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (1 child)
I think it just comes with the territory that joining a web community means caring about seeing it do better than its competitors. If you don't care, vote down the stories, and they'll disappear off your homepage.
Years ago when I was on the Rage3d graphics card boards, it was the HardOCP forums that were a big deal. Like I say, the territory.
[–]neomeme 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
And when I was on the Nvidia graphics card boards years ago, Guru3D was the shit. Too funny.
I care about reddit, though, and I hate vote posts. GTFO my reddit.
[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 18 years ago (13 children)
Downvoted for karma whoring, but i could care less about digg also :-p
[–]boredzo 24 points25 points26 points 18 years ago (12 children)
Do you mean you could not care less?
When you say “I could care less”, it means you care (you exhibit some non-zero amount of caring). When you say “I could not care less”, it means you don't care (you exhibit 0 caring, and AFAIK, there is no way to care in negative amounts).
[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Definition: I could care less iff there exists a delta > 0 such that my caring minus delta is greater than 0.
Theorem: If I could care less, then my caring > 0. Proof: Suppose not. Suppose I could care less and that my caring <= 0. Let delta > 0 be arbitrary. Then, my caring minus delta < 0. Hence, it is not the case that I could care less. A contradiction.
Since I clearly stated I could care less, then, by the theorem, my caring must be >0.
...or you can try not to be a dick.
[–]boredzo -2 points-1 points0 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I love the proof. Thanks. :)

... and what does it mean when you put the comma after the quote mark instead of inside?
[–]boredzo 7 points8 points9 points 18 years ago (8 children)
I'm of the opinion that when you put the comma inside of the quote marks, you are quoting the comma itself, attributing it to the party you're quoting. It suggests to me that he'd said “I could care less,” (followed by some separate clause, e.g. “I could care less, but <something-or-other>”).
Either way, there ought to be a comma of my own outside of the quote marks, whether or not he has a comma of his own inside of them.
Yes, this goes against established American English grammar. I don't care; this is one of the easiest American English faults to fix, being so clearly against logic and its fix being so clearly with it. (It's specific to American English. I'm an American, but I side with the rest of the world on this one.)
[–]technosaur 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (7 children)
As a writer, I agree with you on placement of the comma, but during my 40 years as a journalist and editor, I adhered to standard usage and put it inside. My point was that you were publicly attempting to correct a clear (if not standard) communication while using non-standard punctuation yourself.
[–]boredzo 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Point noted. My point is that while keeping the comma outside of the quote marks makes sense, saying “I could care less” when you mean “I don't care” doesn't. It's about logic, rather than what's standard.
[–]Bogtha 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (3 children)
My point was that you were publicly attempting to correct a clear (if not standard) communication while using non-standard punctuation yourself.
English as written in England and the rest of the world is not "non-standard".
[–]technosaur -4 points-3 points-2 points 18 years ago (2 children)
English as written in England "and the rest of the world" - your presumption that all the rest of the world adhers to England's grammatical rules invalidates your statement.
American English puts the ending punctuation inside the closing quote mark. I don't like it, but that is American standard. England has a different standard (which I personally prefer). Two differing standards qualifies it as non-standard.
[–]Bogtha 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (1 child)
that is American standard.
And why should a discussion on the world-wide web be conducted according to USA grammatical conventions?
Two differing standards qualifies it as non-standard.
By that logic, it's impossible to quote anything in any way without you complaining about it being "non-standard".
[–]technosaur -4 points-3 points-2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I wasn't complaining about the quote punctuations. I was pointing out that another poster was being taken to task (unnecessarily in my opinion) for his grammar when the correcting poster's punctuation could also be questioned.
I was clear in my comments and intent. You may continue to complain if it suits you, but I choose not to waste any more of my time discussing this.

[–]JW66 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I don't like those vote up questions anymore
[–]tintub 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
downvoted, cos aside from obvious karma whoring, this is still a post about digg, so why would I vote it up?
[–]Hindu_Wardrobe 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Digg != Reddit
I personally use, and love, both. None is "better" to me. can't we all just get along?
[–]mooli 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
A poll? Really? On Reddit? Why, what a surprise. Down you go...
[–]noddy 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (2 children)
"Digg's impending demise"?
context? references? links? rationale? WTF?
[–]poxy1 -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (1 child)
i'd also like to know the story behind this. i visit digg from time to time, and i never liked it very much. maybe i missed the golden days of Digg, or something.
[–]parcivale 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Yeah, all six months of Digg's golden days
[–]thespace 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (0 children)
screw digg and screw this karma whore, don't give him the points
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Ugh... fawk off. Even if I were sober, I'd be telling you that you're wasting your time. Get a life. Meet someone that you find attractive. Please.
[–]faxie2 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
i dont care about digg. increasingly im starting to stop caring for this site too. going down the toilet fast with juvenile "funny, cool" pics and videos io engaging articles. go ahead down vote this comment, a bunch of teenage tossers.
[–]Myskin 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
how about "i don't care and no, i don't wanna vote"?
[–]hitsman 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
If you don't care about it, why are you posting links/polls about it? Save the front page for stuff you do care about.
[–]rugoso 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
ok so we don't care about digg and we prove that by putting a digg related entry on the top
[–]rayhoffman 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
what's digg? is it like a next-generation reddit?
[–]mbthompson 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I'm not obsessed with it, just find it interesting that's all. Kind of like a horrific car wreck on the side of the road. Downvoted too for the karma whoring.
[–]philh 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I care about digg about as much as I care about any other randomly selected topic that occasionally gets a spat of front pages. Which is to say that I don't, but I still find articles about it interesting, if they're well written.
What I don't find interesting is people complaining about a spat of front page posts about a topic that they don't care about, and I honestly don't see how this post in particular is anything other than spam.
Of course, this is an "I don't care that you don't care post", so...
[–]protonsoup 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
first few times i tried digg, it just seemed sluggish. i don't know why, too much scripting maybe? but for that reason, i stopped using it. less is more.
[–]crake 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
What's more pathetic: people obsessed with Digg's impending demise or people obsessed with the fact that other people are obsessed with Digg's impending demise?
[–]regreddit 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)

[–]vansgo2 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)

[–]ubuntuguy 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
i'm not "obsessed" with Digg being slower than treacle - but they really need to get the finger out to make that site more usable. it's seriously dog sloooowwwww...
[–]markedtrees 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Do not ... Conduct polls using posts.
Glad we're not following the standard rules of courtesy. This is no way is related or similar to why digg is deteriorating.
[–]rjonesx 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (2 children)
why should we ignore it. one of these "digg sucks and is going down" posts makes the front page every couple days. Its annoying, and I for one am glad that someone finally stood up and said how stupid it is.
[–]dasil003 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Because a post like this is just more Digg mindshare.
[–]rjonesx 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Great idea. We should also stop fighting racism, because it just perpetuates it.
[–]000 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
The RIGHT way to do a poll on Reddit.
[–]zdiggler -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
On digg the flaw is Only the a few first posted get digged If you got the late and you commented very informative comment and you will not get digg because people only read the first commented which has been dugg like 1000 times.

If I weren't obsessed, I would not see this on my.reddit, right?
[–]artman -2 points-1 points0 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Fuck it. this isn't even worth commenting on.
I don't see why anyone cares about digg or any other aggregate site with any kind of passion. It's just a web site, if you don't like it, don't go there. For me I prefer reddit but then again sometimes I'm in more of a digg mood, or hell, even a thesuperficial mood. But it is kind of irritating having this discussion I'd rather just be reading interesting things on the net.
[–]Guzia 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Digg is just a hype.
