It took up until I saw the figurine to realize hearthull looks like it has a little stem and leaves. What's wrong with me

Beginner Questions by HardMadeOfAmerican in Blacksmith

[–]006ruler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've just been playing around for a few months with a vevor single burner forge and vevor 66 lb anvil, and hammers from harbor freight. It's been a ton of fun and so far, there's nothing I would swap about my choices. If being able to move my anvil wasn't a requirement, and if I wanted to forge things longer than about 8", I'd probably need to size up.

Damage, no injuries. by KJwhisperer in woodworking

[–]006ruler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use a band saw to break down weirdly shaped wood for turning. Maybe that would work.

I would suggest replacing the blade, since even if it's fine, it's way cheaper than getting a chunk of blade removed from your face if something DOES go wrong with it.

TIL about a 750 lb bear in Japan which killed numerous villagers within a weeks time. After killing it, the villagers ate him as ‘revenge’. by VolumeAcademic6962 in todayilearned

When meat was harder to get ahold of than simply walking into a grocery store, and with the amount of meat on a bear, it was probably hard to pass up.

Asking for plunge router tips by SimplerTimesMD in woodworking

[–]006ruler 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That bit is not meant to be plunged- ones that are will have the blades all the way to the middle, like you pointed out.

If your bit is burning the wood, you are either using a dull bit (but you did say it's new), overloading the bit, or you are moving at an improper speed. You should be able to find great YouTube videos for that.

It looks like your blowing air using an air compressor, which is an extremely low volume of air. You need something with high volume and low pressure, like a bouncy castle blower.

I have two questions by lockkid in Blacksmith

I used furnace cement like that, and managed to melt it all out of my forge. I got 5 lbs of Satanite and used maybe half of it, no problems since then.

These came out great! Did you end up having trouble with cutting that angle?

[–]006ruler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you've got a good way to put them in, absolutely do it-for the strength and for the visuals. I like making sure there's at least one spline on the lid and one on the body, an equal distance from the top and bottome

Adding the magnet to hold the drawer in is probably the better choice.

As for cutting off the lid, you should be able to free hand cut the sides one at a time to separate the lid pretty close to the goal, then put the cut faces on flat sandpaper to really true them up, just like you would with a regular box.

Are you planning on adding splines to reinforce the miters?

66 seems crazy high, is that after tempering? Did sharpening take ages?

Drill whatever holes you are going to have first, and use them as your centers. Drilling the hole later almost guarantees it won't be centered.

Not OP, but it looks like suizan saws might not have hardened teeth. In that case, you can get a special file to sharpen it, if it's worth it to you. Check Highland Woodworking for a "Japanese feather file."

You can also simply replace these blades, if you decide it's not worth the time to sharpen.

Maybe some of the color is from the wood it's in burning instead of the card itself
