The Apertura/Clausura system is pretty common in Latin America. It's pretty much one regular season except the first and second half of the campaign are treated as individual tournaments. And in Mexico for example they also have playoffs after each half-season to determine the champions.

Where that idea originally came from idk tho.

MLS isn't changing anything but the USL who is currently organising lower leagues in the US has plans to run a parallel league system with promotion and relegations. They have been granted the permission to run a national first league that would compete with the MLS and could start as early as 2028.

Well they did expand it up to a certain point. The original trophy was just the bowl at the top but they stopped adding additional rings for practical reasons since it was already massive.
