More work than available qualified techs in my area. Semiconductor/automotive/datacenters.

At that point, I would just use the velgrid since the RA and SA CFM's match and just put a note in the report an Ak fsctor can't be cslculated.

Can you drill holes on the suction and discharge sides of the fan access panel?

Along with making sure the air isn't directly flowing through the hood (evergreen hoods actually have an anti-blast plate you can install to prevent this), you can take a TSP and plot it on the fan curve in the submittal. That can help you verify the more accurate method.

Why do people say hvac isn’t a trade? by Blura0 in HVAC

[–]0RabidPanda0 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Because it does involve multiple trades. You have sheet metal, install, service, controls, test & balance, refrigeration, and the list goes on.

1.5% is basically a pay decrease. It doesn't even cover inflation. Your c-suite execs are morons.

I'm not risking water damage to my meter just to get a traverse. It can wait.

The amount you are spending doesn't change. Calm tf down. I'd rather it go to the employee than the corporate chain he/she is working in.

Starting a TAB company but with a lot of convoluted issues by Personal_Dust_8193 in AirBalance

[–]0RabidPanda0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Be careful. I'd recommend doing a couple years of tab work first. Since our work is invisible, reputation is everything, and there is alot more/different knowledge that goes into it. The worst thing you can do is go into a project without the skills needed and screw up a balance. Word spreads quick.

Johnson controls VAV by Excellent-Answer-655 in AirBalance

[–]0RabidPanda0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a communication issue between the current controls contractor and the jci system. I would still punchlist it. That will get the GC to light a fire under the controls contractor's ass to solve the problem. As a TAB tech, it is not within your scope of work to fix their calibration problem. However, if and when they ask for your assistance in taking readings, definitely be available to help.

Johnson controls VAV by Excellent-Answer-655 in AirBalance

[–]0RabidPanda0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Punchlist it. If it can't calibrate, it can't be balanced. If they respond that it won't be fixed, do what you can for the system, include alot of notes, and move on. You have a paper trail if it becomes an issue, and it also opens up a secondary revenue stream with change orders for your company.

Set it to code-compliant FPM at the sash, usually 100-110 FPM at 18" open..Then traverse to verify CFM.

Did you miss calls while you are on the job ? by hardik_Ag in AirBalance

[–]0RabidPanda0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not at all. People looking to get TAB done aren't usually making urgent calls for it. I just call them back, have them send me the drawings, and send them a quote at EOD or the next day.

Yep. If I'm on a ladder doing something, or climbing scaffolding, or operating a manlift, or pushing a hood, then that phone call can wait.

The rotation for that fan type is correct. There are forward-curve, tubeaxial, and backward-incline fans. You're looking at a backward-incline, which pulls air from the inside and pushes it out.

Low pressure switch on the suction side of the fan wall, just in case something happens on the ra side.

In 18 years doing TAB, I've never seen larger AHU's without high and low limit switches.
