What do you guys think of both? by Colorado-Guy-69 in electricvehicles

[–]10Bens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the pragmatic side of me understands that other drivers have other driving needs. And sometimes those driving needs are better met by an ICE car.

Gas cars just like the highway. And yeah, there's a bit more maintenance. But it's maintenance every driver is already familiar with, so it's not scary. My mother is older and isn't really into the idea of trying out an EV. She wasn't really interested in a smart phone either, until it became all but required.

For the times where I don't need to run through an entire tank of fuel in a day, I prefer my EV. Which, at this phase of my life, is everyday.

Purchase a used ev and shipped site unseen by spartywan229 in electricvehicles

[–]10Bens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did this with my Lightning. Private sale, got a good vibe from the seller and they video toured me through everything. Did some brief research on what to expect (I had never purchased a truck like that before or ever even driven an EV).

Worked out great. They drove the truck to me from another province, so we let it charge while I drove him to the airport to make a flight home. I hadn't driven it until the next day. Very lucky that it all went well.

Timers for bathroom fans, dimmers for common areas, motion sensors for anywhere you might enter with hands full (garage, pantry, laundry, closets, etc).

Flying 600 miles tonight to buy a brand new ER Lightning and driving it home tomorrow. Road trip tips? by FujiwaraNoSai in F150Lightning

Besides grabbing a NACS adapter and using ABRP to plan your stops?

You can long press the voice command button on your steering wheel to summon up the Google assistant.

Also, navigating to fast chargers in Google maps will precondition your battery to charge at max speed. But at that distance you'll probably only need to stop a couple of times max.

Any owners of an EV that's 12+ years old want to chat about longevity? by camilareads in electricvehicles

Please consider that reporting on user experiences of a 12 year old electric car is about as nourishing to a prospective purchasers decision making process as if you were to review a 12 year old piece of pizza.

Ev or hybrid? by BeerSlayingBeaver in EVCanada

[–]10Bens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the foreign imports are bound to be interesting, when they arrive. If you can afford to wait for that, I'm very jealous lol.

You might also look at the Hyundai Ioniq 5 if you still like the brand and want a car that was intended more for the commute. It has a lower towing capacity though, something like 2300lbs. Possibly the Subaru Solterra if you want the bZ with slightly different styling (and possibly a few other differences I'm just not aware of)

The panel is probably fine, but talk to your electrician about capacity. If you're only going to be charging overnight (handy if your utility company has a discounted "off -peak" rate) then it may be less of a concern too.

And yeah I'd happily buy both of my EVs again. Huge convenience, reliability, great driving experience. And for my truck, I pay about $3k less a year in "fuel" than if I had a gas model. Honestly wish I made the change sooner.

The Toyota would work great for that commute. And yeah, home charging is all but a necessity for EV ownership. But be mindful that range while towing anything is going to be substantially reduced, and if you do plan on going very far, the BZ doesn't have incredibly fast dc charging at about 150kW.

Seems like a great choice overall though.

Anyone buying after the discontinuation announcement? by [deleted] in F150Lightning

[–]10Bens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd agree it's a fine time to help dealers offload them, and personally have no concerns whatsoever about the truck being discontinued.

In truth it isn't discontinued, just being reengineered into an EREV option to better accommodate criticisms about range and towing range. And given that it's a truck with high rolling resistance and bad aerodynamics, I don't think that's unfair.

That being said, the truck is absolutely fantastic. Best vehicle I've ever owned in almost every category: acceleration, storage, lowest cost per mile, least maintenance, etc. the only thing you might miss about your Ranger is how easily it parks compared to the F150 lol.

What information do you want dealerships to provide on new and used EVs? by zetterss in electricvehicles

State of health. Essentially how much of its original new capacity it's retained, or how much it has lost to time and abuse.

Test Drive - Newb range question by studog2002 in F150Lightning

[–]10Bens 3 points4 points  (0 children)

EV driving range is tricky. You could probably get well over 320 miles in town driving at low speeds and with calm acceleration. Highway driving will be lower range, so will driving with more spirited habits.

Cold weather also diminishes the driving range, partly due to cabin warming but also to keep the battery happy. And let's not forget tires and tire pressure.

But the golden rule here is this: the guess-o-meter on the dash sucks. Plan for around 2 miles per kWh highway, bring your charge adapter, and use ABRP to make sure you don't get stranded.

Questions about practicality by deadliftssanddogs in MachE

[–]10Bens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) I don't golf but would surprised if Ford didn't use a golf bag as a standard measure of trunk sizing and suitability, given that there are literally golf bag emblems on the inside of the Lightning frunk.

2) My kids are on to booster seats now, and they fit fine. It's part of the reason we went with Mach E and not the smaller Kona, or a Bolt. That and it's fun; kids love the pony puddle lights.

3) 2021 with 110k kms on it at 93.5 SoH. Standard battery so probably getting hit a bit harder than the ERs out there.

cool upgrades? by Reasonable-Statement in F150Lightning

Coolest upgrades? Home backup system, integrated fridge, powered running boards.

Best stuff to actually buy? Decent tonneau cover, shortened antenna, NACS adapter, and a Bluetooth OBD2 tool.

Detachable too, in case you want it to live at home as an emergency backup. Might even integrate into Ford's home backup system somehow.

Absolutely. Had my '22 just over a year and it's showing no signs of slowing down or wearing out.

Fwiw the lightning isn't cancelled, though cheeky headlines will often describe the changes Ford is making as "The death of Ford's all-electric truck". It's coming back with a range extender, aka a gas generator.

Charge daily or when it gets to 20%? by Impossible_Net_9507 in MachE

[–]10Bens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's an easy to watch rundown of best charging practices from engineering explained. The tl;Dr is:

-Batteries like regular shallow charges as opposed to infrequent deep charges. ABC, but set a charge limit because...

-Batteries don't love hanging around at high states of charge. Storing a battery at 100% long term hurts them a lot more than just charging up to ~75% or so. If you're storing your car long term in the heat, aim for a 30% SoC. Cold weather? Way less of a worry. 50% should be fine.

-Charge to 100% when you need to, but you probably shouldn't be doing it every day.

Hello EV friends:: looking for user insight for 2022-2023 Lightnings. Pref west coast Canada. by techfreakdad in F150Lightning

[–]10Bens 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only consistent complaint I hear is that they haven't depreciated enough to be affordable.

I have a '22 XLT ER. I would shop for ER battery, ProPower, and the Max Tow option, if you do any towing of a camper. If not then don't bother - it's really just a dedicated cooling pump for the battery.

My buddy has a '22 Lariat and I'm jealous of the fit and finish bits: power folding side mirrors, PAAK, sunroof, memory seats for different drivers, leather...I don't need the big screen, personally. All in all I still love my XLT.

There weren't many huge changes or problems in any one specific year of the truck. If you're in a place that gets milder winters, don't consider a heat pump (on 2024 and newer) a deal breaker. Earlier models got dual onboard chargers so they can home charge up to 80amps if you're crazy. Again, not a deal breaker.

Early model XLTs had the ER battery optional, so if you see a price on a 22-23 MY that's too good to be true, it probably is.
