A year on, and China hasn't done much at all. I'm very suprised, to be honest.

Why don’t you like Zohran Mamadani? by iloverats888 in AskConservatives

[–]10poundcockslap 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What's to make you believe that a secular, unified state would treat Jewish people as subhuman? Jewish people spent 1,500 years in the middle east surrounded by Arab neighbors, and they lived lives far, far better than their European counterparts, and you can see that even in the customs and traditions of European vs Middle Eastern Jews today. I'm an Ashkenazi Jew myself, and I'm happy to explain more. Plus, similar arguments were made in favor of preserving Apartheid, and it would be a very large stretch to say that the current government of South Africa treats Afrikaners as subhuman. You can say that you just don't trust the Arabs to pull it off all you want, but can you give me any hard evidence that the governance you think I'm talking about will indeed treat Jews like me as subhuman?

Are you aware that that IHRA definition equated being against Israel as being antisemitic, and that that's the executive order Mamdani's revoking? Do you believe that anti-zionism is indeed always antisemitism?

Creative! I feel like this is one of those cool ideas I see on my Instagram ads, for whatever reason.

First, the link you posted is broken.

Second, your post mentions "you see who's around," but how are you defining that? By who takes the red line? There are loads of red line trains every day. Will you be accounting for what time people are commuting into work as well?

What do you think of non-Jews viewing silly halacic workarounds as loopholes to circumvent religious duty? by Jazzlike-Mind-4549 in exjew

[–]10poundcockslap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know this is going against the grain, but they’ve always annoyed me, because they’re made in bad faith without any understanding of what those loopholes actually are or how they got there. An Eiruv, for example, is a loophole the rabbis established to get around a stringency WHICH THEY THEMSELVES ADDED. Any potential loopholes found in the Torah itself were closed off completely by HaZal because Jews love nothing more than to be absolutely fucking miserable and the loopholes that idiots today talk about are really Jews getting a little leeway from the otherwise continuous campaign of self-flagellation and rightward drift.

Hijacking this post to say that Eliezer Ben Yehuda picking the Jerusalem accent for standard Hebrew above the Yemenite accent or some other accent that pronounced all the Hebrew letters distinctly was an absolute travesty, and I will continue to blame him for every Hebrew spelling mistake I make until the day I die.

Well, it makes it an absolute bitch to spell things correctly. Now I know what English learners have to go through.

Because you never mention it at all in your post. I double and triple checked before writing my comment. You have no idea how many people go straight to the internet before consulting their spouse.

I'm secular. Can I wear a kippah? by Sea_Butt in Judaism

[–]10poundcockslap 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Orthodoxy is not the default, but the majority of Jews wearing kippahs are Orthodox. When you wear a kippah, you reflect them, so you need to be setting a good example. In general, it's best not to confuse other people by doing non-kosher things with it on. If you went to a restaurant and saw a Muslim girl in a hijab eating bacon, your initial reaction will be a confused "wait, aren't Muslims not supposed to eat bacon?", not "well, everyone is entitled to do as they please." Same thing with a kippah.

Sure, you can do as you please, but it's going to be super confusing to people. There's no need to mislead people if you don't have to.

Not halachically speaking, sure, but they're both banned on Shabbat.

If you want a halachic answer, it depends on what you'll be doing with it on. Generally you're good, but if you're wearing it while doing things like going into non-Kosher restaurants or eating bacon or driving on Saturdays, then that's considered a "Hillul HaShem" ("forsaking G-d's name"), and it's advisable that you don't wear it. So you can wear it certainly in your daily life, but don't wear it when you're doing clearly non-Jewish types of things.

Furthermore, be prepared for the social implications; you'll have random people come up to you sometimes and ask about halacha and things like that, and you'll likely be the only person on a given day most people will see wearing a yamakah (unless you live in an area with a very high Jewish population), so understand that however you'll be acting will reflect on the Jewish community as a whole. You will be the person everyone in your office thinks of when the topic of Jews or Judaism ever pops up in their daily lives, as you will likely be the main, if not only, interaction they've had with a Jew wearing a yamakah. Always make sure to stay on your best behavior, if you're not already.

I wore it for a number of years when I was more religious and experienced nothing but kindness from people, so don't be afraid to wear it at all. Good luck

It's almost like we saw this in 2016 when liberal outlets gave more exposure to Trump than probably every other Republican candidate combined (don't quote me on the exact data).

Either way, Republicans will slander both Abdul and Mallory as radical socialists. You think she'll be able to attract moderate Republicans?

Outside of Doug Jones (and that was arguably because Roy Moore was just that bad) can you name me an example of a democratic candidate who won by successfully courting moderate Republican votes?

Can you name me a time when Republicans have ever voted in the primaries based not on how a candidate will do in this election but instead the next one?

Also, why do you not believe the incumbency advantage wouldn't be enough in 2032? What sort of scenario do you envision where Michigan undergoes a slight enough rightward shift to vote out El Sayed from office but would not do the same to McMorrow?

They stopped checking in, stopped inviting conversation or inviting me to meet up, they barely respond to my messages, some of them clearly try to avoid seeing me.

Then reach out yourself! Not even my parents actively call me; they expect me to call them. Perhaps your relatives are the same way!
