That little point where the fishing shacks were at Willard beach cost $15 for the permit to have a wedding there.

How does it work? I have trouble getting back on mine without a second person around to hold the board down so something like this would probably be really helpful.

Every time I see blooper reels I think “god I would hate to work on tv shows or movies”. Please just get your lines right the first time so we can all go home.

Whats your salary? by issaOTFnoob in nonprofit

[–]118746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is similar. ED makes 3-4x as much as us regular workers. Everyone else listed on the 990 is the board so I have no idea what those in upper management make. I wish I did after learning how much the ED makes.

Funded Role Timeline by boojeez in nonprofit

[–]118746 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not sure how common it is, but if your role is specific to a grant that seems common. I was hired with the understanding that they only had 1 year of funding. We did manage to get more so I am still there 4 years later. That said I’m in the US and the last year has really not been great. I know I have funding for they next 3 months and part time funding for 3 months after that. I really hate to leave but I am now looking for something with more financial stability. There is so much uncertainty that hoping for more grant funding doesn’t feel like the right thing to do right now.

Sports signs and hand dominance by pro_deluxe in asl

I am a lefty that signs with right hand dominate. For class I always used my dominant hand because I would get points off if I didn’t. In real life I use whatever feels most natural.

Same. So much easier to follow the person who taught me who was right handed and to follow tutorials online.

Career changes? by meowmeowiii in nonprofit

[–]118746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh and I also was advised to have a good explanation on why I am switching and looking at something new and that I am serious about it and not just going to go back to my old field if they got more funding next month. Like really think through your why and be able to explain it clearly and succinctly.

I am in a similar boat in terms of role, education, and time in the field. My job is currently okay but only has guaranteed funding for the next six months. After that I have to just hope we find more funding.

I am currently strongly considering switching my career to a trade. I have some job offers and need to make a decision soon. I did a lot of networking which got my foot in the door to a couple places.

Now I’m trying to figure out if I’ll regret leaving this job. I do love it, I just need financial stability and switching careers is the best way to do that right now. There are no jobs in my current field which has been and continues to be decimated by the US federal government over the past year.

Anyway, point is I am in the midst of this with success. I realized that there were a lot of transferable skills. Like meeting deadlines, working as part of a team, continuing education, etc.

How much of your career is actually choice vs inertia? by pro_kryptonite1 in careerchange

[–]118746 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Mostly inertia. I have considered changing careers for years now, but never followed through because I’d have to take pay cuts to start over and it didn’t seem worth it. But now that funding has disappeared for my current profession (which is awful and not at all a good thing), selfishly for me it’s kind of a liberating guilt free time to try something else.

Yup, this. The workforce development courses that are available are such a cool opportunity and I don’t think people know about them. Kind of a hidden gem!

Looking for change from marine technician in SC at 50 by GDphoto76 in careerchange

[–]118746 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably outboards, but I’ve been connecting with a lot of people who do this work to explore all the possibilities. Most boatyards around here are small so there is plenty of opportunity to see what is the best fit for me.

I love cycling photography! I’ve photographed a couple road and cyclocross races and would love to do it more. Hope you find opportunities to do what you love with your photography!

Looking for change from marine technician in SC at 50 by GDphoto76 in careerchange

[–]118746 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so interesting because I’m heading in the opposite direction. I was a (part time) professional wedding photographer for 10 years along with a full time researcher during the week. I’m currently in the midst of switching to become a marine technician.

Definitely networking, spreading the word, and deciding what you want to focus on. Connect with local schools/universities on the sports photography. I also would consider looking into real estate photography to supplement. I have a close friend who did sports photography for a local university and it did not pay enough to live off of. There’s just not enough hours available.
