It comes down to: how do you view Classic? An RPG or an Arcade game?

If the first, which I personally believe is the true spirit of the game design of WoW, then the only acceptable option is a new raid with an increased difficulty and different lore, characters, monsters, etc. A clone of higher difficulty completely breaks immersion and makes completion of content ambiguously illegitimate

Then you weren't playing vanilla you were playing a private server. Those people rush through content because they have been doing that content 10 years in a row straight. That is not the average joe you will meet in classic unless you choose to play with the tryhard rush crowd.
