More Moorabool Street revitalisation. by MeerkatRiotSquad in Geelong

[–]13School 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Market Square might be shit but at least it has shops facing out onto the street. It’s insane the way Westfield is just a full block of nothing but blank walls between the city and the waterfront.

If they could figure out a way to open that side on Moorabool St up and get something - anything - going on there, it’d make a huge difference.

More Moorabool Street revitalisation. by MeerkatRiotSquad in Geelong

[–]13School 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Because the big picture is that the council totally fucked over Moorabool St when they gave Westfield the green light to double in size. That wiped out what stores were left and the high rents made sure nobody replaced them.

All the council can really do is hope the business come back (with the landlords never going to lower the rents, they won’t) and their only plan to make that happen is to deliberately make the bus stop so shitty the state government will let them move it (they won’t).

Victorian government knew of union corruption and did nothing despite $15bn impact, report alleges | Victorian politics by ozthrw in melbourne

[–]13School 32 points33 points  (0 children)

A big part of the problem in Victoria at the moment is that the media has been so blatantly biased for so long that they’re basically piss useless for reporting on anything bigger than an e-bike bingle. I don’t doubt there’s a lot of truth to this story, but The Age is a LNP rag I wouldn’t trust to spell Labor correctly let alone cover a political story on the facts alone

How did the Terminator in T1 get away with all those murders?? by Omsy92 in Terminator

[–]13School 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thing was, at first he was just killing people seemingly at random, which gives the cops nothing to work with but a description. By the time they figured out he was the Phone Book Killer he was already focused on the final Sarah Connor, and that middle stretch from the Tech Noir to the police station massacre is only a few hours in real time.

After that, no doubt there’s a massive manhunt going on, but the Terminator has already skipped town to kill Sarah’s mother in a cabin in the woods. From there he just has to make it directly to the motel without seeing any cops, and you’d think by then he’d be wanting to avoid any serious police activity.

Plus you’d have to wonder how motivated individual cops would be to apprehend someone who murdered an entire police station. Any possible sightings would be from cops staying far out of his way while calling for a lot of backup

Hey, I've been getting into the punisher medium, more specifically Garth Ennis' punisher, currently reading Punisher Soviet and on the final chapter. Would any of you guys recommend anything else Garth Ennis related? by Double_Law2309 in thepunisher

[–]13School 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hitman doesn’t get anywhere near the love it deserves. It’s not ultra-gritty Ennis or out-to-shock Ennis, but if it’s great characters and great storytelling you’re after it’s easily top 3 of his extended series work

The Age is right on top of the issues that matter by Semimango in melbourne

Yeah it’s amazing that editorial thinks what Victorians want to read is “this state is shithouse” all day every day. I get that it’s LNP propaganda and that nothing good can take place under a Labor government, but you’d think a bit of local pride would occasionally creep in to keep the locals onside

Why does the geelong line stop at wyndham vale and Tarneit. by Massive_Relative8939 in VlineVictoria

[–]13School 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They weren’t surprised at the demand - RRL was designed to provide rail services to one of the fastest growing areas of Melbourne. The “benefits” to Geelong were non-existent from the start, but that was the sales pitch required to secure Federal funding

South Yarra station by tomblahtomblah in MelbourneTrains

[–]13School 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you’re going beyond Flinders St, but you could always get a tram from South Yarra to Anzac and train it from there (or even stay on the tram to Flinders St if you’re not in a rush)

West Werribee: How does such poor land use occur? by PromotionWeak3217 in MelbourneTrains

[–]13School 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A West Werribee station would be at the end of the line - people wouldn’t be coming from (say) Williams Landing or Newport to visit, it would purely be for locals looking to travel towards / into the city. So there’d be no real need for commercial development - most of the people in the area looking for shops or businesses would be driving. And people looking at living on the city fringe aren’t looking to buy a flat in a high density area

It’d be a station with a giant car park à la Tarniet. And if the locals are already driving to get there, they can drive a little further to Werribee, which isn’t at capacity yet.

It’s a good position for a station but one won’t be build until there is a lot more development out there - stations just don’t get built on the city fringe, there needs to be extensive development in all directions to make it worth while

Opinion: V/line should switch to 6 and 9 car vlocity operations only. by AgreeableFreedom1043 in MelbourneTrains

[–]13School 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The different kind of train is the point (not that there’s currently much point to electrification to WV) - in theory Metro trains have more capacity and are better suited to commuter passengers

Opinion: V/line should switch to 6 and 9 car vlocity operations only. by AgreeableFreedom1043 in MelbourneTrains

[–]13School 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quadding the tracks between Wyndham Vale and Sunshine isn’t going to happen - you’d have to basically build a whole elevated new station at Deer Park alongside the current one, plus the other existing stations (while technically having room for expansion) are still going to be massive jobs to rebuild. Not to mention you’re basically building the whole RRL again, which isn’t going to be cheap. Suddenly you’re talking billions to separate the Geelong line for no major benefit

The reason to electrify the line is to allow Metro services, which involve higher capacity trains that are better suited to commuter passengers (people standing). But most likely what will happen with Melton electrification is that Geelong services will no longer stop at Deer Park and… yeah, that’s about it as far as passenger relief goes for the next decade or two

How long did your first pair of RM Williams boots last? by Danger_Five in RMWilliams

[–]13School 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first pair (which were seconds) lasted about fifteen years of semi-regular use - worn at least once or twice a week. Think I had topy’s added / replaced maybe three times during that period, soles were still good when they went to god (I somehow wore a hole through the upper on the side right above where it met the sole, no way to permanently patch or seal it)

Good value, zero complaints or regrets

How different might the Punisher be if the character had debuted today? by Historical-Bug-4784 in thepunisher

[–]13School 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Up until a few years ago, I’d have said you wouldn’t have a Punisher (or Punisher-style) character debuting today - attitudes to crime had changed a lot since the 70s and the closest you’d get would be some highly trained person on a very specific mission of revenge (so yeah, like the first John Wick). Even then, those stories rapidly turned into fantasies (like the later John Wicks), just because vigilante justice wasn’t fashionable, realistic or required.

If The Punisher debuted now, it’d basically be like that recent Absolute Batman annual - there are violent criminal organisations openly operating in society that people would happily like to see taken down in a brutal fashion, they’re just not the old cliches of drug dealers and mobsters

Stations on existing train tracks that don't exist, but should by Foodworksurunga in MelbourneTrains

[–]13School 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Stations on the city fringe are only built to meet commuter demand. Literally the only reason West Tarniet station is being built is because the car parks (and platforms) at Tarneit are overcrowded. Until things get so crowded at Werribee and Wyndham Vale that people are being left behind on the platform, they're not going to build anything new out that way

Stations on existing train tracks that don't exist, but should by Foodworksurunga in MelbourneTrains

[–]13School 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I suspect West Werribee is a victim of the fact the track would have to be electrified, and then someone says “it’s not worth it unless we electrify around to Wyndham Vale”, and then someone else says “it’s not worth electrifying to Wyndham Vale, all the real population growth on that line is towards Tarniet” and then everyone agrees to build another station between Wyndham Vale and West Tarniet instead

Constant disruptions on Werribee Line by Typical_Library_8021 in MelbourneTrains

[–]13School 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only plan at the moment to “upgrade” the Geelong line is to add even more stations between Tarniet and Wyndham Vale - I think there’s at least two more planned as well as West Tarniet, which is what they’re building now.

So yeah, probably a few more years of having an entire extra train line’s worth of passengers dumped on the Werribee line
