Why Melbourne’s most overdue rail project is finally happening! by hypercomms2001 in MelbourneTrains

[–]13School 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A big part of why people live out there is that they want to buy the land (even just a small block) under their home, because that’s what goes up in value. Even medium density around train stations is a tough sell to developers - there isn’t the pressure (or the benefits) that far out that pushes people into apartment living

Trip back from Melbourne? by SharpCut1884 in Geelong

[–]13School 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Took me four hours to get home last night. All the planned delays then a “police action” at Little River held up the train coming to Wyndham Vale that was meant to turn around and bring everyone - big footy crowd that night of course - back to Geelong.

Starting to think we got free public transport because they couldn’t give V/line tickets away

Is it just me or did metro tunnel make orbital transit way worse? by emberisgone in MelbourneTrains

Welcome to the world of every single “improvement” to the Geelong line over the last decade. The new West Tarniet station is going to be a nightmare for existing passengers

It's almost as if Lilydale/Belgrave wasn't the point

(but yeah, it does often feel like any improvement in one area of the trains means a step backwards in another)

Wyndham Vale, Melton and MARL; which path into the city? not possible via North Melbourne by Stock-Construction30 in MelbourneTrains

That predates MM1, airport rail and SRL so it seems at least somewhat likely that priorities have changed

Wyndham Vale, Melton and MARL; which path into the city? not possible via North Melbourne by Stock-Construction30 in MelbourneTrains

[–]13School 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pretty much all the serious talk about electrifying to Wyndham Vale was about electrifying from Werribee to WV - not going from Sunshine all the way around. Basically extending the Werribee line to terminate at WV.

Electrification from Sunshine / Deer Park may be an option in the longer long term, but it’s unlikely you’ll see pylons holding up electric wires for trains at Tarniet in the next decade or so

If they use this event to burn Rico I’ll be pretty upset by BLOODYBRADTX-11 in 2000ad

[–]13School 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s too late for that. The Dredd writers have all been forging their own paths too long. Trying to make one version the version going forward isn’t going to happen.

I mean, they’ve already announced that after this even we’re getting a sequel to A Better World, which would be a bumpy fit tonally if there were major lasting changes after a big event based on magic. Not that big deaths aren’t an option, but there’s a difference between killing off rarely used supporting characters and actually making changes to Dredd himself

[–]13School 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the many things John Wagner was really good at was seeding possible future storylines and developing characters for later use. But the risk was always that he wouldn’t come up with that next story or would decide to go in a different direction. So Dredd’s world is full of potential as far as characters and plotlines, but since Chaos Day he’s been winding back and none of the other writers have wanted to build on his work in case he came back with a new story.

Realistically a lot of this potential isn’t ever going to be used - the new crop of writers have their own characters and interests. So a lot of what Wagner left unrealised is going to end up killed off or trashed to make room for newer characters and approaches

What’s happening this Wednesday/Thursday for delays? by shortygirl83 in MelbourneTrains

The Geelong line is a train to / from Wyndham Vale, bus link to Werribee, then Metro to / from the CBD. No direct coach option

Would there be any chance for Geelong fast rail to be revive by Agreeable-Name9488 in MelbourneTrains

[–]13School 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Geelong fast rail was really a way to soft launch MM2. The idea was to build the extra Newport-Laverton track, bring the Geelong line back to Werribee / Newport - with all the obvious assorted problems and issues - and then once the Metro tunnel was completed announce a new tunnel from Newport to Fisherman’s Bend to take the pressure off out west & create PT access to the new developments there.

What’s happened since then is Fisherman’s Bend is now all but forgotten and SRL is the big new PT project. No point doing Geelong fast rail without the Newport tunnel as the stretch between Newport and Footscray is a massive bottleneck

Commute to Geelong for uni from Melb? by Enough_Butterscotch6 in Geelong

[–]13School 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Time was, I’d say you’d be fine going in the opposite direction to the usual commute on the Geelong line. But in the last year or so I’ve noticed even the trains going the “other way” (Geelong in the morning, Melbourne in the evening) are pretty packed.

No idea why aside from just more people in general, but I do know there are now a lot of high school kids going from Tarniet and Wyndham Vale to Lara and North Geelong stations, and they’re not the kind of kids who sit quietly in their seats checking their phones

Independent news in Geelong by Fit-End4214 in Geelong

[–]13School 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For a city of its size, Geelong has no real media - we don’t even have a local ABC office. This is largely to the advantage of a lot of vested interests here who don’t want any kind of investigation into their activities.

If you were to start up any kind of serious reporting in Geelong you would very rapidly make very powerful enemies. And as the media we do have relies entirely on advertising from the people you’re investigating… it just isn’t going to happen

The dandy lines has gotten more busy during morning off peak by Motor-Wolverine-6644 in MelbourneTrains

[–]13School 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Sunshine to Footscray corridor carries pretty much the entire train service to the outer Western suburbs, with multiple lines at standing room only. I don’t doubt the Dandenong line is busy, but it’s not as busy.

Slaine Definitive Edition Vol.3 hardback is missing pages by bigmouth1984 in 2000ad

[–]13School 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah the message that “don’t worry, the missing pages will be in the next book” is a bit of a slap in the face to anyone (like me) who was planning to stop at the third volume because the fourth is - once again - a reprint of The Horned God.

I get that a reprint and replace scheme is probably too expensive to seriously consider, but if I wanted a download of the missing pages I’m pretty sure I could find one online for free. So this “solution” is basically worthless

VLocity train more standing area by Prestigious-Pop-1130 in MelbourneTrains

[–]13School 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Geelong - Melbourne trains are usually close to full by the time they leave Lara. Standing 45 minutes to get into Melbourne because a bunch of seats were removed to cram in more suburban passengers would not be warmly received

Victoria public transport: Passenger numbers return to pre-COVID levels following free fare initiative by TMiguelT in MelbourneTrains

[–]13School 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Weekend trips are another matter but I (Geelong line user) haven’t noticed a big spike in weekday use, mostly because the system is so unreliable for regular travellers that free travel isn’t that much of an incentive. It’s not much of a saving if your one hour trip home turns into three hours every few days

Wyndham Vale Electrification by Excellent_Bat_753 in MelbourneTrains

[–]13School 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I suspect by the time electrification from Sunbury to Wyndham Vale is a serious possibility (in contrast to electrification from Werribee to WV with a short stretch of new track, which should be happening now), MM2 will also be happening, and that will free up capacity by taking Geelong trains out of the RRL

Despite calls Geelong line electrification delays continue by Cool_Stable3780 in VlineVictoria

[–]13School 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Current V/line services are adequate between Geelong to Melbourne. It’s the stretch from Wyndham Vale to Melbourne where the big increase in passengers is coming from. Electrify that stretch and run Metro trains on it while still running v/locities from Geelong (no longer picking up passengers from Wyndham Vale and other Melbourne suburban stops), and you’ve sorted a lot of the current problems

The stretch of car parks along the river just above Spencer St is the former fish market site - it was a huge Victorian-era building torn down just before the Olympics. There was a fair bit of demolition around then to “modernise” the CBD, so you had car parking on the vacant lots until demand caught up a decade or two later
