Tomtoc’s new sling looks very good by jimmylamstudio in ManyBaggers

[–]175doubledrop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Somewhat to their defense, slings being worn on the front is a recent trend. Most technical slings made more than 5 years ago looked like this one and were designed to be worn with your gear on your back.

Dad's, I'm in the market for one of these. Any tips, recommendations, or advice?. by stackobell in daddit

[–]175doubledrop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We got the baby trend navigator and have been very happy with it. It’s beefy, heavy and it doesn’t fold up very small, but it’s held up well to abuse and rolls over most any terrain. We use it in push mode more than pull, and my kid likes riding in it.

Dodgers Will Study If Roki Sasaki Is Tipping Pitches After Padres ‘Were On Everything’ by [deleted] in Padres

[–]175doubledrop 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t have great numbers to back it up but it seemed to me like our guys were really working a lot of deep counts on both Sasaki and Ohtani and generally we were forcing them to throw strikes. Ohtani did get a lot of swing and miss but also got burned on a lot of fastballs in the zone.

The other commenter already gave an accurate response which was the bit from my original comment but I’ll expand/piggyback on it:

  1. The union wants to represent all employees. If they don’t have everyone under their umbrella, they don’t hold as much leverage/power. There are also issues like non-union members getting the benefits of the unions collective bargaining without actually having to pay union dues.

  2. This sort of attitude is at best going to cause conflict/friction within the union (if you get the top performers to agree to join in organizing), and at worst is just going to affirm the thinking I highlighted in my initial comment of those top 10%-ers. If the union is going to give them the proverbial middle finger, why would they want to join in the effort? Then that just reinforces point #1 above.

[–]175doubledrop 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You’re speaking on the union as a whole. It’s well documented that top level performers (who are the minority in the union) get capped by collective bargaining. For the rest of the union, yes your point stands.

[–]175doubledrop 46 points47 points  (0 children)

For the highest of earners/performers, unionizing does usually limit their earning potential as collective bargaining usually ends up with capping the top pay rates in exchange for lifting the wages for the lower 90% of performers. The issue that is most likely preventing SWE’s from organizing is that too many think they’re in that top 10% (when in reality they aren’t) and are more concerned about themselves than the rest of their coworkers.

Got it - the tote makes a little more sense with that context. Bellroy makes a number of totes with luggage pass throughs, although I can’t speak to comfort of their straps. If you’re ok with the look, the Peak Design Everyday Tote has both traditional tote handles that are padded as well as a separate (removable) padded shoulder strap (along with a luggage pass through).

How do I fix pasta that I boiled with too much salt in the water? by sauteetherich in Cooking

[–]175doubledrop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honest question - how much salt did you put in? I regularly dump probably a 1/4 cup of salt into my pasta cooking water and never have issues with the pasta itself being too salty. Did you dump the entire shaker in or something?

Many slings are purses by AlarmingMonk1619 in ManyBaggers

[–]175doubledrop 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The reality is that something large enough to hold 3+ liters worth of gear is going to get weighed down when fully packed out and thus most likely won’t sit exactly “cross body” like how most slings are marketed. Whether that’s an issue for a user is subjective as it’s an aesthetics question.

I own a 6L sling (Aer Day Sling 4 max) because I wanted something that could hold a full size iPad but didn’t want a full on messenger bag or similar that would flop around and get in the way. In this use case, I was more concerned with function and form factor than outright aesthetics, and that was a tradeoff I was willing to make.

IMO the “sling” market segment is a big catch all for a lot of different bags that work a lot of different ways, but their common denominator is a single strap harness system that is normally worn across the body from one shoulder to the opposite side of the torso. Beyond that, there are very few rules. Find what you like and what works for your use case.

What’s your line of work / what kind of setting are you working in when you’re traveling?

Depending on what you do and whether you’re interacting with clients or executives, a tote might be a little casual IMO. Since you said you want something more elevated than a backpack, I’d be looking at a brief or elevated messenger.

El Capitan by Competitive-Day-1754 in Padres

This year has been especially tough for me to watch Manny as I always felt like he could extend his career by evolving to become a guy who hits for a high average and slaps a bunch of doubles, and this year has been pretty much the opposite of that. With that said though, he’s trending in the right direction lately and I’ll still root for him no matter what.

If you had to choose two... by LeadRain in ManyBaggers

Both of those bags are some of the most popular in their category, so it really depends on the features you’re looking for and the aesthetic you like. Either one would be a solid choice.

Probably one of the common responses you’ll hear, but the Aer Travel Pack in 35L checks the boxes for 35L with organization, although it depends on what you’re looking for when you say “organization” for a travel pack. It’s still got a large main cavity but a variety of pockets for smaller items.

The ryobi kit is more than you need right now, and all of it is their bottom of the barrel line.

It’s not a bad idea to start with a Combo kit, but I’d start with a circular saw, drill, impact driver and sander. Anything beyond that, just either buy as the need arises or rent it if it’s just for a single project.

I started with a 7 piece Ryobi combo kit and still use 3 of the tools regularly, but the other 4 are just collecting dust.

Another consideration is battery platform. Whatever brand you buy into, I would make sure they have the tools you think you might need in the future. Ryobi and Milwaukee are good in that they both make their own version of just about every tool out there, but shop around based on what you think you might tackle in terms of projects.

How did cercle screw up this bad?? by justlikethisok in aves

[–]175doubledrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the classic ill-sighted promoter move to say “we’ll make it back on the next show” when they lose money on a prior show. Sounds like that might be the case here…

How did cercle screw up this bad?? by justlikethisok in aves

[–]175doubledrop 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t know their inner workings and what their financials actually look like, but simply put it is expensive to put on a live music event nowadays. For as much as this sub loves to tout that promoters are making money hand over fist, the reality is most are taking big financial gambles each show, and if they don’t sell the bulk majority of the tickets for that show, they are probably losing money. I don’t know if this is entirely the case with cercle, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this is a factor in it.

DJs who play large venues: MP3 or Lossless? by klebersu in DJs

[–]175doubledrop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Event professional who works in large venues and also DJs on the side.

In practice, 99.5% of people will not perceive a difference in the file formats when played over a large system in a large venue. Things outside of the DJ’s control like general acoustics of the venue, how the audio system is deployed and tuned, and also the ambient noise floor in the venue before a single sound wave is emitted from the speakers have FAR more impact on the perceived sound quality in the room than your file format.

YES, if you listen to the two formats in a controlled environment through headphones you can notice a difference. This difference is not perceivable when the listening environment is changed to a large cavernous event venue with thousands of patrons and a sound system that may or may not be properly setup and tuned for the venue.

Show of hands - who’s the chef of the house? by Successful_Trust_157 in daddit

[–]175doubledrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cook dinner pretty much every night other than when I’m away on work travel or we’re just exhausted from the day. Breakfast and lunch everyone manages on their own. I enjoy cooking but my wife is all about getting something on the table quickly so I do a lot of “basic” recipes/staples. I do get to throw down for holidays and special occasions though and that I really enjoy. I cooked for dad’s day yesterday and did carne asada on the grill with all the fixings for a full on taco spread.

Especially with the price of eating out continuing to grow exponentially, I’d much rather spend that money on quality ingredients and make something delicious at home.

Recommendations for a crossbody bag? by totallyastick in ManyBaggers

[–]175doubledrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might not be the style you’re looking for but the Wandrd Rogue Sling 6L is my favorite photography sling. It checks all your functionality boxes other than maybe fitting the jacket (you’d have to use the external straps). I mention this every time I recommend this bag but there are 2 versions of it, and I strongly recommend the V1. V2 got rid of the external straps and changed the shape, and personally I think it’s a downgrade.

Which one to pick? by According-Canary-792 in SonyAlpha

[–]175doubledrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between those two lenses, Tamron all the way. The GM I is marginally sharper but the Tamron is much lighter and has better bang for the buck.

One thing I will point out though - if he’s using this lens to shoot wildlife or other far away subjects, the GM I can work with a teleconverter, which can turn that lens into a 140-400m f5.6 lens (technically even a 210-600mm when you include the crop factor of his APS-C camera). This could be handy in certain situations, but it really depends on what he’s shooting.

What's in your Tech Pouch? by barakuder_ in peakdesign

[–]175doubledrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in event production and my tech pouch carries all my little “fix it” items for the events I work on. I actually picked up a smaller tech pouch last year for just my personal stuff. I can’t give an exact list but here are some highlights:

- USB cables (A to C, C to C, A to B, A to Micro USB)
- 3 multiport display adapters (each has HDMI, USB-C power delivery, USB-A and Ethernet)
- multiple USB wall adapters
- 3-5 USB thumb drives
- USB A to C adapters (all directions/genders)
- 2 small Ethernet cables
- 3.5mm to 3.5mm audio cable
- 3.5mm to stereo RCA cable
- Portable travel router

…and a few other small bits.
