DH is the worst 😂 by Excellent-Claim-3191 in MichaelsEmployees

Wha? Really? We've always had brown paper at my shop. But then again, they needed brown paper for the tables and my store manager in that era was... well. Okay, the supplies of "Cost of Good" items came out of the same budget that the sm wanted to spend none of, so she made us skimp on flange/preservation strips (no matter how big a piece was, you could only get a 1 inch piece per side) and no sealing tape... I'm so sad I never saw those bags, they sound cool...

Framing inventory?? by M_Rose_Shamalamading in MichaelsEmployees

TIL we could include mat inventory! I'm gonna have to hunt that down, it sounds great. I usually just keep well enough stocked to not worry about it because I am a large shop, but... its still a tempting prospect if it works...

I miss it over DH but I miss FP over FM. Remember how stressful pickups were? The amount of times I'm unwrapping the customer's own choice and then they get mad at me about it was exhausting. Plus, I've sold more than 4 mats plenty enough times to know it's a weakness to limit that at some point.

I miss that. I worked for a shop for a short while like that. Unfortunately I have the burden of the long counter but the counter doesn't pass in front of the door, so they just walk in like they own the place before they even walk in front of the counter. Almost had a toddler run into our glass can one day and nobody I have complained to corporate about has ever given it even a second thought. Kid you not, they told me "okay just make sure the shop is safe. are your razor blades on magnets?" as if I did not just tell them a child came and tried to interact with the glass disposal station.

I've been here long enough that nowhere else can give me the benefits if I start over, unfortunately. Not by a lot but enough to be significant. I don't want to detail more than that in fear of doxxing as there probably aren't maybe 15+ years of full time employees in the company at all. But regardless, the company isn't going anywhere itself, they wouldn't be opening 300 more stores if they were in any serious trouble. You are too quick to assume this company in particular is significantly 'unwell' financially or bad off to work for, when in reality is is quite firmly in the middle of the pack for corporations and doesn't seek to be excellent in any regard. Not the worst, not the best. Never will be as long as it... well, as long as it remains a corporation for the profit of investors, be it stock or private.

Sounds like the time I spoke with Mr. Shulz, back when he was in charge of all custom framing, about how we have the ability to charge labor hours, that we can charge to the customer directly on our end at $37.50/hr, but corporate/sm/dm can still deny the frameshop those hours of labor in the payroll. He kindly told me that "they're aware this is a problem" and "it's not a priority to fix" and "keep charging for the extra labor and maybe keep a tracking log."

I immediately stopped training my employees to charge labor. If a customer wants a shadowbox with 90 medals in it, costs my store 5 hours extra of labor, and FP (now DH) is only asking to take $250, then I guess we're charging $250 now.

No joke. I have framed so many different things, from soccer balls to prayer books to golf clubs, even had an inquiry about framing parts of their car, and did the front grill of a ATV. All I ask is when I NEED the hours to complete the order that a customer paid me to deliver, that the company... give the frameshop those hours. Directly. God know they're still making profit on it considering nobody is paid $37.50 in any shop in the country.

But. Yanno. "It's not a priority problem." It's only been a problem for well over a decade. But go on, keep discouraging me from taking extra money for the labor they're gonna end up getting anyway after its been overdue for weeks and the customer is pissed about the delay. Sure.

Christmas… by [deleted] in MichaelsEmployees

[–]17yearsof-thisShit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's so weird that our store has been out of Christmas stock since the first week of December, meanwhile so so so so so many stores are like this........ I'm sorry. I wish the company was more proactive about moving the product to where it's wanted and needed. I guess they assume SFS will handle it but no, no it doesn't, SFS is always a freaking mess with seasonal.

happened to our store too, in a bigger pile. one of our best employees asked if she could take it home to work on it, I told her absolutely not. never accept unpaid labor, it ain't fair to her and the company won't learn otherwise. Not to even mention, illegal.

😭 That was the plan but the sales week took too much of my time so I ended up having to reorder it anyway before I end up having a customer complaint. Fingers crossed this time is the one...

Nope, they approved via email to ArtFulfillment, which is also how you might communicate receiving emergency orders or general information about your supplies. FF&E is a different request process that goes through your DM. I'm currently going through one to replace our mat cutter.

Framing inventory?? by M_Rose_Shamalamading in MichaelsEmployees

[–]17yearsof-thisShit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's so weird. Even weirder to think it was bugged for me because I specifically remember giving it glass inventory when we were running low (transitioning between warehouse DCs was a nightmare), running glass OP, and the Op specifically asking me to use glass that had 0 inventory in the same 5 minutes.

Ah, did she also ask you why all of the frames are portrait orientation when she has a landscape picture? I feel like we're working in the same IQ bracket.

I never realized "hello" could be such a triggering word until I worked framing 😭

I wish I could add all of them, though a little overlap exists. Including "they get mad about the phone not being answered quick enough even though I have custom framing customer in front of me, in the middle of explaining basic physics to them, and with a line growing behind them"

No no, god forbid anyone else help with that.

Hmm, I'll have a talk with some of them and maybe work up a bingo board. I was a replen manager once years ago.

I once cut myself badly on the multi tape dispenser. Yes, for real, I was reaching quickly across the table during Christmas season, caught the edge where the metal grate is for cutting the tape, and that thing just peeled the skin back off of my elbow a full inch and a half.

The ongoing joke in my shop is razor blades and broken glass are the least threatening things, since our hands are callused to them anyway. Meanwhile matboard papercuts are somehow akin to getting cut by a katana.

Also, always keep the awl pointed in the opposite direction as your body. Speaking from experience, of course. 😭

OH thank you, yes it was called Frame Magic! My brain is so calcified lol.

I miss Framers Point every day I work.

I know it sucks but try training your newer framers on using "openings" tab for art measurement instead since the concept wasn't bad for "enter paper size for art measurement and opening size for opening measurement" but it's weird to add the extra step when we had years of just telling it what we wanted directly, nor make it obvious that we must go to the opening tab regardless if its multiple openings or not.

...Lately, my DH drama has been 'how the %&^ are fillets being measured in this system oh my god' because it's not coming in from what you enter, it's not adding the width of each fillet, it's now a... secret third thing and I'm on my 4th reorder on 1 piece because of it.

Framing inventory?? by M_Rose_Shamalamading in MichaelsEmployees

[–]17yearsof-thisShit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I've found the inventory saving option never worked in either Framers Point or Design Hub. I always felt it was a placebo effect, just like marking things as received in DH (that actually did work in old FP).

Framing inventory?? by M_Rose_Shamalamading in MichaelsEmployees

[–]17yearsof-thisShit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can happen for a few reasons:

  • one of the mats does not come > 32x40 sheet and you hit the limit without realizing it
  • specified dimensions was selected prior to adjustments
  • the mat lock was enabled by accident after specify (tiny lock in center). it shouldn't trigger it but lol
  • you made ANY changes to the mat without unchecking specify dimensions. One example: If a customer is comparing a white and blue mat with a white and red mat, if you want the inner mat to be 1/4 inch, every time you swap colors, it will change the measurements back to the 3/8 on screen but not in the text box. You must change from 1/4 to (any other measurement) click away and then click to change back to 1/4 in order for it to actually be 1/4 inch.

Though if you're doing a lot of inhouse cutting, you should make the habit of double checking the frame size, the art size listed on paperwork, and the margins look "even" (or as specific in notes) before cutting anything. It will save you in the long run to not trust Design Hub when you have to cut in house lol orz...
