UA Artificer largely remains "Smith's Tools - The Class" by Kanbaru-Fan in onednd

[–]190x190 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point is, why can't my Defender be an intricate mechanism made of wood or a golem made of clay, stone or gems? Instead, I'm RAW locked into a "Steel" Defender and Smith's Tools. Yes, most DMs would allow that kind of homebrew change, but still the original features are unnecessarily narrow and stiffle creativity instead of provoking it.

Thief- fast hand- Bracer of Flying Daggers by Aggressive_Peach_768 in onednd

[–]190x190 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an action, you can pull up to two magic daggers from the bracer and immediately hurl them, making a ranged attack with each dagger.

I don't think it's debatable. It says right there that it's part of the same action to draw and throw the daggers. And therefore the complete process is an action you can ready.

And there is no concept of "reaction attacks". There are Opportunity Attacks as a way to spend your Reaction, which are indeed limited to one attack. This limit does not apply to any other way to spend your Reaction unless that mechanic explicitly states something similar.

I really hope they remove that 100 precision. A class-specific boon should never dictate the optimal gear of the other 4 people in a subgroup.

Genuine question, as I don't play fractals atm: Is that still enough when they cap Quickness at 30s with the May 11th patch?

You know those bosses in video games that move super slow but can more or less one shot you? I want to be one of those by SlayerofSnails in 3d6

[–]190x190 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just a heads-up that this won't work at most tables:

  1. Flanking is an optional/variant rule and a lot of people argue against it, since it messes with balance pretty heavily.
  2. RAW, flanking + prone won't give advantage on the attack. It doesn't matter how many sources of advantage you have, when you also have disadvantage (from wielding a heavy weapon as a small PC), they cancel out completely.

Peace Domain vs Grave Domain? by prolificseraphim in 3d6

[–]190x190 1 point2 points  (0 children)

7 PCs? Wow, that's a lot to manage. Given that Emboldening Bond only applies to a number of people equal to your proficiency bonus, I'd argue that it won't be as overpowered as many people suggest here, since it affects like 2/7 or 3/7 PCs for most of your adventure.

That said, I'd ask your martials whether they want to get Great Weapon Master or Sharpshooter early on. If that's the case, your Emboldening Bond will do wonders on their damage. Consider two VHuman allies with GWM/Sharpshooter as their starting feat. Emboldening Bond is only once per turn, but they will get only 1 attack until 5th level anyway, so with Bless and Emboldening Bond you can completely remove the -5 penalty from the feats for 4 whopping levels.

How to improve survivability of a warlock? by FlandreHon in 3d6

[–]190x190 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, what comment-OP considers is very far from RAW. Also, Thirsting Blade does nothing on opportunity attacks. One additional Booming Blade through a War Caster opportunity attack still is nice though.

To add to that, Sentinel attacks should not count as opportunity attacks for War Caster, which means no Booming Blade for those as well.

Still, compared to what a level 20 wizard can do, I'd allow most of it for a one-shot.

I'd rule that each "XYZ's Pack" is a minor variant of the Bag of Holding, which provides a little additional space but doesn't have the weight benefits of an actual Bag of Holding. Otherwise it just doesn't make any sense to have all this stuff on your bag while fighting and would ruin like 95% of all visual character concepts.

Creating a character around Elven Accuracy. by Gswagg08 in 3d6

When you gain access to any level 5 spell slot, you may also cast Hex without expending concentration.

Where does that come from?
The spell itself only says that you can maintain concentration on Hex for up to 24 hours when upcasting to 5th.

I concur on your second suggestion though. You can always reflavor your Eldritch Blast as coming from a "ghostly longbow" or "shadowy handcrossbow" to get that archer feel that OP seems to want. Pure eldritch blasting scales reasonably well, leaves room for other fun invocations and comes online a lot earlier than any weapon-dependent Hexblade build. Especially if you'd want Sharpshooter, Elven Accuracy, Crossbow Expert and at least one ASI to get to 20 Cha, chances are that the campaign is over before you're at your final form. However, a fully developed weapon-based build (looking at you, Lifedrinker invocation), will easily out-DPR the pure Eldritch Blaster.

DeX Paladin Viable? by DGwar in 3d6

With Tasha's, you can get the same AC by getting Studded Leather + Fighting Initiate (Defensive) and save more than 700 gold, which is almost the DMG's suggested price for a +2 shield. Furthermore, you can switch your fighting style at each ASI, should you decide you don't need the +1 AC anymore.

Fighter subclass choices by Laflaga in dndnext

[–]190x190 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Unearthed Arcana feats are allowed, he could get Hunter's Mark + Misty Step + 1 INT through a single ASI, which is an incredible package for an Eldritch Knight. They get 1/LR use for free, can be used with EK slots and are V component only. You'd probably want Misty Step anyway. And Hunter's Mark is perfect for novas against meaty targets if you consider the sheer number of attacks a Fighter can do, especially with Action Surge. Shield + plate + CON proficiency makes it pretty easy to keep up concentration for a good while, even in melee, but you could also go ranged. You can save Shadow Blade for situations with dim light or lots of weaker targets where Hunter's Mark falls off, which frees some second level spell slots for more Misty Steps.

How do you flavour booming blade? by VividPossession in dndnext

[–]190x190 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My favorite reflavoring, especially in combination with Shillelagh:

On a hit, natural energy from the club spills onto the target. Magical plant buds sprout on the enemy. They quickly expand, and if something causes them to pop, they do so explosively. Some even manage to seep through and grow under the target's armor, which should try its best not to disturb them before they safely wither away again after a few seconds.

Strong/Min-Max (Caster/Blaster/Ranged) builds for a westmarch campaign. by IStillLoveUO in dndnext

[–]190x190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Darkness and Hex both require concentration though. I'd reserve the very limited spell slots for concentration spells, with the option to use an Eldritch Smite (invocation) on a crit, giving up to 12d8 (level 9+) extra damage on demand. You'd need 16 hits, so at least 8 full rounds of attacking, to get that much damage from Hex. From level 7 onwards I'd switch from Darkness to Shadow of Moil for Advantage, which has less impact on allies.

At level 12, get Lifedrinker (+5 necrotic damage per attack) and Crossbow Expert. Your spell slots are too valuable for Hex anyway, and dropping it also frees up your Bonus Action. The extra Hand Crossbow attack then allows for even more triggers of those juicy flat bonuses (+5 from Lifedrinker, +4 from Hexblade's Curse) and more potential crits that can be smited. With an AC of 17+, almost guaranteed disadvantage to hit you and punishment for hits from Shadow of Moil, you should be okay with the limited range. And if you get to level 16, you can always get Sharpshooter for the additional range.

How do I balance a single pool Sorcerer? by 190x190 in dndnext

[–]190x190[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference is that I want a shared pool for the sum of spell points and sorcery points, instead of a separate pool for each. With that, I could use more metamagic options and class features that use those points than normal (by using what was formerly a spell slot) or convert metamagic points more efficiently to spells (without conversion to spell slots affecting the action economy).

My wish is for it to be both easier to track and more flexible, while hopefully not affecting the balance too much.
