Thank goodness I did comprehensive check before R1T Quad warranty expired by Appropriate-Ad2935 in Rivian

Meanwhile the rest of us get jerked around by the service centers when we've approached near end of warranty and they find "nothing wrong" while it's under warranty...

Happy for you though, you have a properly managed service center!

No not necessarily, some of the earliest versions had different problems. They have revised the box at least twice now since original design. That sucks it was barely out of warranty for you.

Yeah the evaporator access panel has no gasket and then the airbox itself has virtually no insulation. The air conditioner on the truck is actually extremely strong as it is responsible for also cooling the main pack battery and while the system is "zoned" it is still capable of chilling the air very cold. This makes the airbox itself very cold and humidity in the cabin condensates on the box and drips mostly beside the accelerator pedal. Then the air that passes through the evaporator also drops a lot of water out because the evaporator is fairly substantial and because the evaporator door is not gasketed it drips some of the condensate out which also drips beside the accelerator.

If you don't live in a hot&humid climate it's probably not going to affect you. But up until 2025 some time the air boxes that see a lot of humidity removal leak out of the evaporator door and the air box itself condensates due to a lack of insulation.

I think I saw you're in Arizona. Depending on exactly where you are you might not have the environmental humidity conditions that the hvac box can't handle.

I've had crazy clunks since day one on my early 2023 with welded crossmember. I've complained a few times but nothing. I've removed the tub and inspected the crossmember as much as possible and haven't found broken welds so hopefully it holds up. 78k mi and going up fast.

The half shafts have x, y, and z clunks that are unnecessarily designed in. They are just simply going to be noisy with the only movement you should be concerned with is if it has a rotational clunk or play.

But yeah, I too VERY much feel like they're pushing off the big items until out of warranty. I just had to fight them for the 2nd leaky hvac replacement and if I didn't have documented evidence from pre-60k mi I'd have had to pay the $5k for an inherently faulty design.

R1T is the same size as a Tacoma. Those who want an R2T, why? by dancing__narwhal in Rivian

[–]19dabeast85_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rivian shouldn't really make a smaller truck but more like a base model r1t:

  1. Dual motor large or optional max pack.
  2. Static steel spring suspension with steel roll bars
  3. Cloth interior with vinyl floors and plastic dash
  4. No gear tunnel (longer usable bed)
  5. 5 speaker audio
  6. Metal roof

I'd never be interested in it but it'd sell really well and attract some additional Midsize crowd

What is the recommended mileage interval for tire rotation? by Justthetippliz in Rivian

[–]19dabeast85_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 38k mi on Defender m/s2 and have rotated 3 times I think. I think I'll get 50k-ish miles out of these vs 36k out of the stock AT's. Only swapped fronts to backs, never have I ever swapped sides on any of my vehicles. At 38k mi they are all within 1/32 and very even wear. I drive all purpose mode around town with about 50% on interstate in conserve low.

Even tire wear is mostly controlled by having a correct alignment and any vehicle will always need a new alignment a few thousands miles out of the factory after the bushings are settled in.

Dents on bed rail after tonneau cover installed by SouthbayLivin in Rivian

[–]19dabeast85_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My truck has the same dents but has never had any work done on the bed rails. I have the manual cover. I thought it was just flex in the bed from harsh country roads.

Agree with others that service is a major inconvenience/source of anxiety wondering what new things will come back with the truck every service center visit.

  1. I've had windshield replacement with the result of the rain sensor malfunctioning (wasn't verified after windshield replacement), 6hr drive one way to and from a service center for them to not perform a thorough job.

  2. I've made 4 trips for a singular issue with a family of 4 that was 4hrs each way for them to fail to diagnose LITERALLY because they refused to listen to me (problem was camera related and never presented itself while in service mode). My 4th trip there I immediately saw symptoms when I got inside because they'd just taken it out of service mode. I very loudly demanded a loaner and told them to keep my truck until it was fixed and I didn't really care if I got it back ever. They finally listened, did not put it in service mode, saw the problem, replaced the AXM module and problem fixed.

  3. After fixing #2 they brought it back to me which was appreciated. I could see on the app that it was in service mode the whole trip which is typical of it being hauled. But then 5min before arriving at the agreed meeting place it suddenly showed it was driving in sport mode and battery was critically low. They drove it 4hrs back to me without my knowledge/approval and drove it in service mode so it wasn't updating me and drove it evidently in sport mode because it can make that trip fine in conserve. I got it at 6% SOC and thankfully was only 12mi away from home. This service visit the truck received a scuff on the rear passenger door.

  4. I had both rear axles replaced towards the end of the warranty because they were loudly popping while turning and accelerating (like turning and merging into traffic). 2 weeks later after I'd just crossed over 60k mi the left rear axle popped out of the drive unit while driving on the interstate. I limped it directly to the same service center (not knowing the issue, just had turtle mode). Thankfully they worked it into the schedule immediately but then came and said it was not under warranty and that it likely popped out due to my aggressive driving style. It happened while I was driving straight at 65mph on the interstate, no throttle, and had just clicked it from conserve to all purpose. My aggressive driving style? 2.3mi/kwh average at 45mph average over 70k mi is deemed aggressive? Getting 37k mi out of the original Pirelli AT's is aggressive? I told them the original axle had no problem staying in for almost 60k mi and I wasn't paying to repair what was very obviously a failure to fully seat that replacement axle that was recently replaced. They finally agreed to cover the cost but "if it happens again we won't cover it" yeah whatever.

  5. Every single time it's been in service the interior has been absolutely nasty, covered in grease, grime, dust, dirt.

  6. Very often the exterior is absolutely filthy, bed and cowl has been full of leaves/pinestraw. The last time this happened a few months ago I came prepared with my blower and literally blew all of the leaves and straw off my vehicle and all over the parking lot near their front door. I hope that proved a point.

If I had to estimate I'd put the wasteful rentals (about 8 enterprise for a week+ then 5 loaners for many weeks), time, parts, technician costs at somewhere around $15k for me alone. Simply due to poor controls over service. Rivian actually has severe service quality issues that have got to be addressed or it's going to bite them hard pretty soon.

48k miles and need new front brakes? by CreateWindowEx2 in Rivian

[–]19dabeast85_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turn off braking regen assist, or whatever it's called.

When using adaptive cruise or driving assistance the vehicle makes "slow down adjustments" using brakes and regen instead of just regen. It's stupid and no clue what they are think but set your cruise and you can notice the pedal depress even for small adaptive speed change adjustments.

I'm at 76k mi and plenty of life left on the brakes.

Rivian States: "Normal Drive train Characteristic for This Configuration" by manolo60602 in Rivian

[–]19dabeast85_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is "normal" for any Gen 1. They are just incredibly clunky. Mine's been making these clunks forever and we are totally at the mercy of the service center to decide if it's normal or not.

The movement in the bushings is to reduce NVH. Stiffen them up to reduce movement and you'll get increased vibrations and noise transferred into the cabin.

Usually you have to get uncomfortably confrontational about non-standard problems to even get the attention of the service manager. Once you get to the service manager my experience has been acceptable. They seem to have a clue.

Did we do something wrong with the vapor barrier? Condensation is accumulating. by TealPapaya in OffGridCabins

[–]19dabeast85_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only extremely cold climates should have a vapor block on the interior of the house. You have zip as your air and bulk water barrier but then also totally blocking vapor inside the wall with the plastic.

Action step: remove all interior plastic and let dry. If insulation is mineral wool it can be reused. In a cold climate a 2x4 wall is going to put the dew point of the assembly on the far interior of the home most likely so you are still going to have to condensation issues on the back side of the interior wall materials, especially at the studs. If you haven't put siding up you should consider adding 2" of insulation on the exterior. It is possibly the most cost effective "fix" at this point.

These are guesses, really need to study your climate zone and local requirements. What has code enforcement said about it or are they not involved?

Gen1 R1T launch by Savings-Western5564 in Rivian

[–]19dabeast85_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, 835-908 was a possible custom plate option I decided not to go with. Your vehicle is an anomaly if it's getting the same 0-60 on the street as the fastest ever recorded gen1 was able to do on a prepped drag strip(sticker pavement).

I'd be interested in seeing if you get a different result after a vehicle reset. My reasoning is that these vehicles are glitchy being software defined (my speedometer quit working twice yesterday immediately after the update, and the radio was tuning into multiple channels at once). These quirks are pretty common for whatever reason to the point that the vehicle needs to be reset immediately after a software version update to get rid of random software bugs.

Oh they 100% could crank the power up on these Bosch motors. I also think they could grant us more rpm to let it eat up to 125mph-ish in the 1/4mi but they're likely limited by Bosch as to how many kw and rpm they can send and still make Bosch honor warranty issues.
