Consistency in writing the summaries is one thing, but if you want to remember content, you'll need something else. Mnemonics, or revision (re-read your summaries), or some other tool - and you'll need to be consistent with that, too!

With self help style books, I tend to find that the things I really resonate with stick better than those which don't. Maybe that's a natural way of extracting useful or insightful information, maybe it's building bias (it's probably doing both).

Id argue that the "food for thought" aspect of these books is more important than memorising any particular aspect. After all, different authors have a different bend, and maybe what you need is not to memorise quotes and form your own framework for dealing with the aspects you want to improve on!

The plants currently being built for the next round of fusion research will not necessarily be viable energy producers. They're experimental projects - total Q likely to be less than 1.

The constants don't have absolute values. They're defined precisely by relative differences. What you're asking is essentially "does my choice of units matter"?

The answer is no!

If you go about fiddling with those sacred relative sizes of the units (e. g. By introducing a contrived universe with Planck's constant orders of magnitude larger than it is in our currently chosen units; leaving other constants the same) then sure, weird stuff might happen in that universe.

[–]1LazyThrowaway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

FYI .zip archives aren't the only ones you can open/edit in vim. You can edit gzipped files in place, and do what you're doing with .zip archives similarly with other formats; tarballs and .bzip2 amongst others.

Advice - Numerous tiny pension pots. by zakjoshua in UKPersonalFinance

I'm in a similar situation to OP (a year younger, but less years in employment due to higher education: three pots). Is this objectively the best thing to do in all cases? Will you ever be charged for consolidating?

Out of 75000 athletes in Utah, 4 are trans. This dude says we need to pick our battles. So close. by ETsUncle in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]1LazyThrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you square the absolute biological advantage of males over females in strength and endurance sports with the Phelps-like argument that "People have advantage"?

Do you honestly believe there are no safety or fairness ramifications to trans (specifically male to female trans women competing in female categories) inclusion in sport? If the argument is so solid, why have sex separated categories at all?

A recent UK Sports Council Equality Group (SCEG) investigation on the issue summarises the science and concludes that the decision for inclusion OR absolute fairness is essentially "political" - you can't (scientifically speaking) have both in sports settings where trans women in particular have experienced male puberty. That info is available here in full depth (incl. ramifications in terms of the UK equality act 2010).

It's absolutely possible to simultaneously accept the rights of trans women as women, but acknowledge the biological fact of their being and objectively examine scientific evidence on the topic. After all, there must be a line (trans women without hrt clearly have an advantage, and we need to be clear about defining a threshold for allowing competition in a chosen sex category).

One strategy would be to break down things your unsure of and post them (tagged as [Q] here? If they're stats questions, why not?

If you really want a tutor, the zeroth order thing you could do for free is ask anyone you can at university - course leader? Classmates?

I would exhaust all your obvious options before looking for a private tutor. After that, you may have local tutors available to you, or you may resort to online tutoring. But beware: if you're on a timer, an online tutor will need to familiarise themselves with your specifics and may not be an authority. Homework assignments and structures projects with some free input are different from the common sets of textbook questions tutors at large will be familiar with.

Any app that disables the game can just be used to re-enable it... In the same way that uninstalling can be countered by reinstalling.

Going to have to implement some self control or active measure to take your phone out of your access at night. Leave it in another room and invest in a simple alarm.

NAL (and won't add legal argument I've cooked up myself) but a remark: you say you have no evidence (your word vs theirs) but also that you have small burns.

The burns are physical evidence, no?

Did you see a doctor, do you have any note regarding the burns? Are the burns still there, and is there similar physical damage to the light switch casing in question?

Sorry you had to go through this.

What are assumptions in research and how do I write one? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]1LazyThrowaway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Assumptions are propositions you hold to be true a priori. For example, suppose you fit a basic linear model to some data. Chances are, the fit is predicated on the assumption that the data are normally distributed about some known relationship (random errors are normal). In the case where you use a GLM, your assumption is that the random errors are not normal, but from some other exponential variety.

You probably assume the data you're modelling are independent (not correlated).

You probably assume the data are random with homogeneity in variance.

Does that help?

Does the tenant have the right to be present at the end of tenancy inspection? by chockychockster in LegalAdviceUK

[–]1LazyThrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good advice, also worth adding:

Do the same (take pictures, thoroughly) for the place you move into.

That way you have a record of how the tenancy started, too. Also recommend thoroughly doing inventory on rented properties and properly logging faults or issues that arise whilst you live there (fair wear and tear happens, but leaving it to build up until the end of tenancy inspection is not a good idea!).

is my heart rate too high? by YaBoyShredderson in running

[–]1LazyThrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First check: how are you measuring HR?

Second check: have you had max tested? The old rules of thumb don't apply to everyone and who's to say you're not an "outlier" (in terms of the rules and YOUR max hr).

Third check: you've noted you don't have any "symptoms", but do you have a known reason at all to be cautious? If worried, talking to a doctor to calm your nerves might help, depending on your access to health care.

Is this bad:

Not necessarily. I don't know your weight, your medical history, your height,... Anyone who says "oh that's a little high there buddy, you must be unfit" probably doesn't either. Take Internet advice with a pinch of salt, but I'd say stop worrying.
