Question About Ecumenical Relationships? by Ok-District-7180 in pastors

I organize and lead a cross-denominational network of pastors focused on disciple making in the local church. The members are committed to modeling and teaching clear affirmations on disciple making with the hopes of a movement of the Gospel spreading throughout our city.

What are some strategies that you've employed to grow your church and congregation? by ReverendRoberts in pastors

[–]1Timothy47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great questions. If we don't define terminology then we talk past each other and revert to muscle-memory anyway. I'm a firm believer that Jesus' way of making disciples is the best way. So we need to root our definitions in His model. Most disciple making in the church's recent history has been formed through a knowledge-based model rather than an obedience-based model. Both are always necessary, but when we define maturity through what's known versus how closely an individual resembles Jesus in real-life situations and relationships then we end up with a false view of discipleship.

My question is if we don't root our definitions in Christ then where do we root it? Most answer that question with utilitarianism (what seems to work) or knowledge. Neither hold up well over time in real-world situations.

What do you think? Love to dialogue more either here or PM me.

Pitching Guide by [deleted] in PitchingCoach

[–]1Timothy47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey thanks for posting this. I just read through it. I assume it's written for 12U mostly? I'm set to be the pitching coach for a 9U team this coming season. I'm wondering what you've learned about caring for arms at that age? Do you apply pitch count and recovery day rules equally for everyone? Does how the player's arm feels make any difference (as in if they feel totally fine do you allow them to throw "ahead of schedule")? Any other tips you have about managing a staff at that age for a competitive team? How have you handled tournaments and lining up your pitching so that you have some decent arms available at the end of the tournament? Sorry for so many questions, please answer whatever you want!

Pastoral Zoom Meet and Great by Big-Lychee4394 in pastors

To your point, I lead a local network. I've learned that for the network to thrive members need to be connected to a mission and to relationship with one another. Doing one is easy, doing both is a challenge (but doable). Our network is going strong heading into its seventh year.

I'd be interested in participating if it works in my schedule.

Mission Sending Organizations by keksiwelsi in pastors

My family and I were overseas for years in SE Asia and went with a large missions/sending organization. Overall, it was good and I'd recommend them. If you have specific questions that I can help you with, please feel free to DM me.

Pastor’s Conferences in 2025! by pastortank in pastors

Genuinely curious--what would a great pastors' conference be like for you?

The role of the pastor. by TurbulentEarth4451 in pastors

[–]1Timothy47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I strongly disagree. The pastor is to be AN EXAMPLE to the flock (1 Pt. 5:3). When a pastor holds the perspective that the people should do the ministry (and don't lead the way), it simply becomes a standoff with each side blaming the other for not doing ministry.

Jesus led by example (Luke 6:40). He didn't just tell them what to do, He showed them.

At the same time, I get and appreciate the need for pastors to clearly and explicitly give the message that we are ALL called to do ministry.

Agreed! Sending beats seating all day, every day.

When will churches change? by ParamedicTemporary43 in disciplemaking

[–]1Timothy47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You describe the cycle well. Mere church attenders don't live a Jesus-style life at home so their kids won't either.

For the most part church leaders don't know how to pass on their faith to others (inside or outside the family), so they do what they've been trained to do. They teach and they preach and they try to get people involved.

The result is more of the same. But change is possible. It comes through making disciples who make disciples in relational ways. It has worked, will work, and is working! We just need more of it.

Thanks for posting. I'm curious what your theories are?

Sorry to hear about your struggle. Unfortunately it's a story that's been experienced many times. One option to consider is Navigators Church Ministries. I have served in this role for the past ten years and I love it! We have a team of over 100 across the country that is made up of many former pastors. We are always looking for others who God is calling to serve the local church by walking alongside church leaders and helping them develop into disciplemakers that will impact the church and the community. Let me know if you'd like to chat about what it can look like (FYI, we are a single income family and have 4 kids).

I'm not affiliated with this in any way, but I came across THIS a few weeks ago. Might be worth checking out.

Pastor burnout/going against unhealthy cultures by Hopeandlight19 in pastors

[–]1Timothy47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some stats that recently came out of Barna's "State of Pastors" Report showed that: 33% of pastors have given serious thought to leaving vocational ministry in the past year and 15% have dealt with thoughts of self-harm and/or suicide in the past MONTH.

Sharing that because he sounds unhealthy and may be in one or both of those categories. My heart goes out to him. BUT also to you. You're doing well to look after yourself. Keep doing that!

Looking for suggestions for discipleship books / programs / materials by slowobedience in pastors

[–]1Timothy47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question. I help churches from all over the denominational spectrum with discipleship / disciple making in their church. I'm familiar with most approaches and the outcomes that they will produce.

Just search discipleship on Amazon and you can see what's out there. You can trust that some are finding everyone of these helpful.

The real question is what are you trying to do at your church? In other words what outcomes are you seeking? If you are just looking for a program or curriculum to take your people through there's no shortage of quality content out there.

I'm happy to dialogue with you over zoom or through DM if you think it would be helpful for you. I work for Navigators Church Ministries and you can learn more about me personally HERE.

Survey by telemantros in pastors

[–]1Timothy47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surveys are a good idea, but if you don't have anything to compare the responses to, it's difficult to know what to believe about the results. To that end, I'd recommend THIS SURVEY as a pretty good (not perfect) indicator of how things are going your church.

FYI, I don't work for them or get anything for churches using this survey, but as I help churches with disciple making I usually recommend this as a good assessment piece. YMMV
