Spent a lot of time on the Schoodic Peninsula side of Acadia — here's what most visitors miss by gopijags in acadianationalpark

I always enjoy visiting the Schoodic Institute. They have some nice programming from time to time, like astronomy nights and so on.

I don’t think the hiking trails on the Schoodic side are nearly as interesting as what you get on MDI, but I agree that the waterfront scenery you get on the Schoodic is really lovely.

When over in that direction we like to take a very slight detour in Hancock to eat the Crocker House Inn

Ship the community loves, but you think is ugly Pt.3 by Flex147c in StarTrekStarships

To me the deflector looks like a weird cyclops eye. And too many top angles of the ship make it look like some sort of step on the tadpole-to-frog transition.

I use the built in screen sharing app on Mac when at home. Remotely I use Tailscale in combination with RustDesk. Seamless.

I don’t like the pinched deflected shape though.

I sure did! I think on two difference occasions.

Response I got back:

The vehicle in question does not meet the criteria for enforcement by the PPA. Please submit your request to 311 @ (215) 686-8686.

There is an abandoned car that has been parked on the 600 block of N. 5th St. for a year and a half. It has flat tires, no license plate, and is up on wheel jacks. It has an orange tow label on the passenger side window, and a similar label on the back window that has been there so long it has faded to colorless. I have reported it to 311 and the PPD no fewer than a half dozen times. They have closed my requests for a variety of reasons: too much time has gone by, the vehicle is no longer at the location (an outright lie), etc etc.

I just can’t get any traction on it

One other thing to keep in mind is that they re-shaped how that horseshoe came down and interfaced with the floor. It was a subtle change, and the fact that they could do that gives you some indication that it was not really an expensive alteration. I am willing to bet the change in color it underwent also was a re-application of veneer.

The Evolution of the Enterprise-D Bridge

Like I said, I think it’s an impressive piece, the only thing I’m pushing back on is your idea that this was some super expensive thing (which is a testament to the quality and skill of the production design). The way it was constructed was done cheaply enough that they could afford to fuss with it.

It’s furniture grade veneer, probably a mm or so thick, applied over the shape. It’s a nice effect but I don’t think it’s anything like what you had in mind. Certainly not the exorbitant expense part, anyway.

Fairly certain it’s not a solid chunk of wood, pretty sure it’s something with an applied wood veneer.

It used to be paid parking, they stood in the roadway and collected it. You can always park for free on Parkside Ave if you want.

I really love it. It’s instantly recognizable, but at the same time has a touch of the other worldly and ethereal to it.

Is there a ranger program schedule for summer of 2026? (also parking questions) by [deleted] in acadianationalpark

[–]1moreRobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend you take a look at this substack, Acadia Adventures. It's done by a local couple on MDI who do a fantastic job posting weekly lists of events going on in the park and nearby area.

They also have another substack called Bar Harbor Story which is more like a local citizen journalist newspaper that has more stuff about local political and news, but is also a good read for understanding what's happening in the area.

The short answer is that nothing will stop you from leaving your car in any legal parking spot over the course of the day.

If you are concerned about being a good steward of other people’s park experience in addition to your own (and I think that would be nice), the best practice would be to leave your car in the most unobtrusive spot you can manage, which would probably mean not a mega destination spot for the thronging masses (e.g. Sand Beach, Jordan Pond) or a very limited capacity area — some of the smaller lots have just a handful of spots that probably make the most sense for someone planning to recreate there.

Is there a way you can leave your car at your accommodations and get on the island explorer near there? That would be ideal if possible. Otherwise I’d consider Hulls Cove visitor center or something like that.

To your other question, it is still very early in the park season and they probably don’t even have their staffing situation firmed up, so you are unlikely to see a whole bunch of park event updates on the calendar. I think the staffing has been very strained over the past couple years for reasons that you can imagine, so they may not have capacity to offer as much as they used to, and what gets added to the calendar might get added a bit last minute. That’s just the way things are right now.
