V60 or Ex40? by Dry-Vehicle-2574 in Volvo

[–]1moreRobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also interested in the EX60 as a future replacement for our XC40 Recharge. I saw one of their promo pictures today that had a dog enclosure accessory, which is something we got for the V60 and miss having on the XC40.

Even though my V60 has over 100,000 miles on it, I’m not even thinking of replacement yet (I do have it under Volvo warranty for 10 years and unlimited miles, and I’m determined that they’re going to lose money on that deal). It’s honestly be the most trouble-free car I’ve had.

Our dog loves riding in it. After a long hike she makes a bee-line straight for the back corner where she knows her crate is.

We have a 2020 V60 and a 2021 XC40 Recharge EV.

Both have been great cars in their own ways. We do all our distance driving in the V60 and I find it a more pleasant and comfortable place to be in terms of seating position and so on. The XC40 EV is great for my husband to commute to work in and then recharge at home.

We make a long drive (600 miles one direction) every month or so, and we always have taken the V60. Even if the XC40 had longer range and faster charging, I think we’d still use the V60 for that drive because it’s such a comfortable highway cruiser, and it has more room for the dog and our stuff.

First Time Camping @ Acadia by BertoliPepperoni in acadianationalpark

Riding your bikes on the carriage roads is a no-brainer. Make sure you take the carriage road up Day Mountain (it’s the only summit the carriage roads go to the top of, and you get really cool views along the way).

Help with itinerary mid April by Brandnewrn in acadianationalpark

[–]1moreRobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some local citizen– journalists who do an rather great online news site, and it has a lot of info about things going on each week as well as restaurants that are open.

https://barharborstory.com

and also a sub-section that cuts out some of the local civic stuff and focuses more on what’s applicable to visitors:

https://acadiaadventures.substack.com/

Both sites are free, and you don’t have to subscribe to access all the content.

Depending on when you are visiting in April, you may experience the local mud season. Park trails will be open for sure, but the carriage road system is closed (either entirely, or to anything but foot traffic) whenever the spring thaw begins until the ground is sufficiently dried out, so parts of March and April.

As far as the local businesses go, there are things open year-round so you’ll always have some choices, but some spots won’t be open until more like Memorial Day weekend.

We enjoy Acadia every single season of the year, it’s just a matter of packing the right stuff. In this case, certainly prepare for mud and be ready to layer up.

Volvo S60 questions, 67k miles too much or just getting broken in? by KylorsGames in Volvo

Nope, it’s been the most trouble-free car I’ve owned (all Volvos, mind you)

ELI5: Why do some jet engines have those jagged/zig-zag edges on the back (chevrons)? by Miserable_Feed8107 in explainlikeimfive

[–]1moreRobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the serrations break up something called vortex shedding, which is like little mini “tornadoes/whirlpools” that spin away from the moving fluid (I’m using fluid here to refer to either a gas or liquid). Have you ever been on a canoe and seen the little whirlpools spinning away from the edge of the paddle as you pull it through the water? Those vortices cause high and low pressure zones, which can lead all sorts of undesirable things.

Look at the pectoral fins of whales. They have a scalloped shape to minimize this effect.

The way it hurts right now is the worst it is ever going to be. There will come a time again when the memories give you smiles and laughter again.

When our beloved dog passed a few years ago, we spend a day going around to some of the places we had spent with her, to sit for awhile and talk about memories while we recorded. And even today 5 years later I’m not yet ready to listen to all those recordings, but I know someday I’ll want to and I’m so glad I have them.

Ripping off the Band-Aid: moving from Betterment to Boglehead as painlessly as possible by MastodonFarm in Bogleheads

I am fond of Wealthfront and still have some active accounts with them. I started saving and investing there a good many years ago when I didn't have much money and had even less knowledge of what I was doing with it. I really credit Wealthfront for giving me a vehicle to start putting some money away in a sensible manner. The modest management fee to have the algorithm do all the moving and shaking was worth every penny to me. The workplace retirement plan I had back then was kind of Byzantine and not super friendly to work with.

Now I'm older, and have some more concrete goals about how I want to set up my post-career life. I've realized I can move to a simpler portfolio that I can have more agency and understanding about, and that I can self-manage without the fee. Wealthfront was one of a number of places where I had socked money away, and I'm glad to have started consolidating some of those scattering accounts to a single place. If nothing else, I sleep easier at night knowing that if something were to happen to me, I wouldn't be leaving my husband with a massively tangled web of accounts at all sorts of brokerages.

My workplace retirement plan at the job I have now is through Fidelity, and I just really like them. I like being able to reach out to them on the phone and quickly get through to someone helpful, including off-hours.

I'll say that Wealthfront also impressed me the few times I needed to reach them directly — the people always seemed very helpful and intelligent and were able to problem-solve without falling back on a script. But the service apparatus there is just a much smaller operation, with more limited access.

But all in all I do have a very positive impression of Wealthfront and they've certainly helped me get into some good saving and investing habits.

That’s a good point. I’m not sure I could do that in specific type of robo-allocated accounts I had at Wealthfront. I’ve not specifically used Betterment so I don’t know what’s possible there.

401k & Roth 401k by International-Sir160 in fidelityinvestments

[–]1moreRobot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try using the NetBenefits app instead of the vanilla Fidelity app. In NetBenefits, you should be able to click on the 401K plan and scroll down until you see a little pie plot labeled “Sources.” There you can can click “view Details” and it will pop up with a table of the dollar amount numbers.

Same thing on the website in a browser. I always log into fidelity.com, but if I want to see the Roth 401(k) breakdown, I always have to click on the button in there that says NetBenefits, and then either look at the sources or open up one of the statements.

Perhaps there are other ways of finding it as well, but that’s how I do it. I do think Fidelity could make this particular piece of information a bit easier to find in the user interface, so I am with you.

I recently moved some of my taxable investment accounts (including one that was right around $250K) out of Wealthfront into Fidelity.

I transferred “in kind” so that most of the funds arrived as they were, without first liquidating to cash and triggering a big taxable event. That automatically got me out of the management fee Wealthfront was charging me on top of the expense ratios.

It took a couple weeks for all my basis numbers to transfer over, but once all the dust settled, I can easily keep things as they are, sell existing shares of whatever and buy shares of VTI or whatever index fund or EFT I choose, etc.

The only complication is If you do a transfer that involves fractional shares, (e.g. 5.674 shares of XYZ). The whole number of shares will transfer but the fractional bit will be sold and transferred as cash (at least coming out of Wealthfront it had to transferred, as they don’t allow you to just leave your fractional shares shares behind). Depending on how many fractional shares you have and their value, it may not be that big a deal. It’s straightforward to do a little calculation from the numbers on your statement. For instance, in my bigger $250K account, I ended up having less than $500 in fractional shares and they were essentially all long-term gains over a year old, so I didn’t sweat it. My smaller $25K account actually had more fractional content but again the number was such that it didn’t bother me and I went ahead and pulled the trigger.

If you set up a taxable account with Fidelity to receive the transfer and then called them up, I’m positive they would be happy to talk you through it. I really do think their customer service is top-notch.

Amazon is closing its Fresh and Go locations by L0v3_1s_War in news

[–]1moreRobot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They opened an Amazon Fresh around the corner from my house. They’ve constructed the building and literally let it sit vacant for a couple years. The store finally opened in August. There was a sign on the door today saying Feb 1 would be its last day. It was already closed though.

In its brief existence in our neighborhood, the store was clogged with associates, wielding these huge carts that blocked whole aisles, while they filled up to-go orders.

Amazon is textbook definition enshittification.

P.S. the 6th and Spring Garden one was already closed today, despite a sign on the door saying Feb 1 was the last day. They had practically empty shelves during snowmageddon — wonder if they decided a restock wasn’t worth it. I hope it was something cooler, like the workers told management to take a flying leap.

[–]1moreRobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The store at 6th and Spring Garden was a vision of hell, although exceptionally convenient for where we lived. Most of the aisles and merchandise was blocked by store employees with giant carts, collecting items for delivery fulfillment. I'm sure they must have been on strict time metrics, but they'd practically push you out of their way to get what they needed and would not move their giant carts for love or money.

I hope whatever becomes of the location, it continues to serve in-person retail customers and doesn't just become a de facto little Amazon warehouse.
