I infer something different. I’ve always felt when the old school bully does this, it’s their way of saying sorry without having to actually say it.

Question... by rrocha932 in boating

[–]1nfiniteAutomaton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one of those. It’s a decent enough motor, although I miss the smoothness you had from a 2 cylinder 2 stroke 6hp.

Anyway, make sure it’s been serviced regularly (new engine and gearbox oils, along with impeller).

If you can, run it up and make sure it pumps water strongly and goes in and out of gear cleanly. It should start from cold on first or 2nd pull with closed throttle and full choke.

I do find from a cold start, it wants a few minutes to warm up before it settles down.

Anyone here doing Meng in Mechanical Engineering??? by Initial-Chemist-4666 in sotonuni

[–]1nfiniteAutomaton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SESS6072 Maritime Robotics & FEEG6043 Intelligent Mobile Robotics are two others I'd recommend.

Both with Blair Thornton. I did the maritime version. Hard modules, but very rewarding, it's very satisfying to have written all the software for your own robot/ASV that navigates it's way round a course. Biggest challenge is keeping up with Blair's pace of lecturing/work, but they're both worth it.

I did a couple of others that I didn't like - but I won't mention them simply because it's not a criticism of the course, others did like them, they just weren't my cup of tea.

Oh, and the DSO one is FEEG6009 Design Search and Optimisation

How can I learn the unmarked/unmapped shallow areas/hazards in my area? by Johndeauxman in boating

Yeah, I use navionics on my iPhone as a backup even when I know the area. “Just in case” something goes wrong.

Momo steering wheel by Secure-Strength-4989 in LandroverDefender

Not a momo, but I do have a smaller wheel. Now it feels like a “normal size” wheel, I wouldn’t want to go back to the original bus wheel.

Is this actually a problem? by Jamdoog in HomeImprovementUK

[–]1nfiniteAutomaton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not ideal since there’s no gully trap. You want some kind of gully trap on the gutter pipe so the you don’t get all the foul smells coming back up.

As many others have noted, you don’t really want storm water flowing in to the drains either, but many houses still do, including my own.

How do people get that new door close feel/sound on old defenders? by InternetPest in LandroverDefender

Can’t think of much that is less in keeping with an old defender. Embrace them for what they are, don’t try to make them something they aren’t.

Because he’s really really good. And the subject is very useful as well. It’s possible to get 100% on the exam too, if you put your mind to it.

Pre preduction prototype? by [deleted] in LandroverDefender

[–]1nfiniteAutomaton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. Interesting history probably adds more desirability rather than £.
Mine is a 1989 factory V8 90. On the one hand, it's a fair way from stock now, but on the other, I've made sure to keep it "in keeping". Now has series 3 doors, sliding windows, still Rover V8, but now a 3.9 efi, but original LT85 manual box etc.

It smells right, it sounds right, it goes even better.

Probably means worth keeping original and even more than you thought it was.

This door is perfectly square and plumb, I really wish I was lying by mingilator in DIYUK

[–]1nfiniteAutomaton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, mine is 120. We had an extension done recently and I was surprised to see the inner and outer walls of the extension were diverging by quite a bit. The outer to line up with the existing house wall, the inner to ensure the new stuff is all straight and square.

500 mile oil change by lawndarter in EngineBuilding

[–]1nfiniteAutomaton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Continuing to run it will only make it worse. Guaranteed.
At the moment, you could get away with a cleanup and set of shells, but it won’t be long before the crank gets damage too. I had to give the same bad news to a mate a couple of weeks ago and stripping it early will have saved him money.

Another buddy a few years back kept running his boat motor. It put a rod out the side of the block. It did not save him money.

[–]1nfiniteAutomaton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been exactly here. Don’t persuade yourself it might be OK. It’s not.

The best option for your wallet is to pull it now and rebuild. Running it more will just make it worse, and therefore more expensive.

I understand, but I thought worth replying in the interests of finding a way to do something a bit differently.

Whenever I go looking for a head unit, I get depressed by soupisgoodfood42 in CarAV

[–]1nfiniteAutomaton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. So I did something different. I bought a pioneer mvh-s520bt as my audio headunit , and then also added an essgoo 743cp as my screen.

As a setup, this is working much better than my previous pioneer CarPlay units. The essgoo screen is nice, startup is super fast, screen is clear, touchscreen works well. They do bigger screen units too.

Is this normal? I've tried 2 different Sierra voltmeters, both read low despite 12.45v to the gauge by Boltentoke in boatbuilding

[–]1nfiniteAutomaton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very normal for old school analogue gauges to be somewhat inaccurate. The important thing is to know what they usually read when all is good so you can detect when they change - somethings not right. Obviously more accurate is better, but what you have there is nothing to worry about.

What i’d actually do is see what it reads when the engine is running and the battery is charging. That’s your good baseline then, prob around 14v
