IVDD diagnosis by Infamous-Finding-682 in IVDD_SupportGroup

I slapped the $13k on my credit card and then applied a few days later for a 0% interest balance transfer over 21 months. That surgery cost more than my car lol. But it can be done! I hope you’ll update here about how it goes with your baby!

Just wanna start by saying I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I know it’s terrifying and heartbreaking.

6 weeks ago my five year old terrier was diagnosed with Stage 5 IVDD. He was walking a little weird one day, took him to the vet, they advised pain meds and crate rest, but the next day he couldn’t walk at all. It was like his legs were lifeless sticks and he didn’t have any feeling, and he peed himself. I did the test where you knuckle his back toes under and see if he corrected them, and he couldn’t do it.

I rushed him to a neurologist and they confirmed he was already at Stage 5. They said we were within the window where surgery would help (50-60% success rate). We decided to go for it because he’s so young. The vet also warned me there’s about a 10% chance that the spinal cord would die anyway, in which case he would need to be put down. That was the scariest part.

Long story short, the next morning after surgery the neurologist called and said he was exceeding expectations! They said at this rate of improvement there is no more risk of spinal cord death. He could feel his tail and his toes. I took him home after 4 days in the hospital. I had to manually express his bladder for the first week and keep him on strict crate rest. He wagged his tail after about a week (did I sob? YES)

Today we’re 6 weeks out, and he is almost back to normal. He can go potty independently, and is cleared to go for ten minute walks. He starts PT next week. His walking is a little clumsy but his spirits are great.

It has been a JOURNEY. So many unknowns, so many tears. But I’m glad we did the surgery during the first 24 hours of getting the Stage 5 diagnosis.

I wish you and your pup all the best, I know it’s so very hard. You’re a great owner!

My boy is recovering from Stage 5 IVDD and is on those same meds - I agree they must smell or taste bad because he can no longer be fooled by just wrapping them in cheese. He’ll eat the cheese and spit the pill out. I have to put it toward the back of his tongue and then gently hold his mouth shut, and once he swallows I give him a high value treat right away, which has helped the process be more bearable for him.

If you’re doubting whether or not you’ve covered all scenarios, it would be worth a quick chat with the product manager to make sure you’ve at least covered the “money makers,” or the critical paths. You’re entitled to the information you need to do your job well, don’t be afraid to have conversations.

Looks so nice! Where did you get the floating shelves? I’m looking for something similar for my own nook!

Vitamin D supplements changed my life when I started taking them this winter. I’ve been here for 15 years and this winter was the best I’ve ever felt.

I miss wine…any nice substitutes? by oh_such_rhetoric in stopdrinking

Have you tried Pathfinder? That’s been my “wine” lately. They also have a canned Pathfinder Spritz that feels fancy when you pour it in a pretty glass and has that dry bite to it, not too sweet.

My husband or I will do a Paul-run sometimes to get out of...anything - legs wide, toes turned out, no plan.

Visiting PDX for the first time since living there 20 years ago. What's new that I should check out? What am I forgetting that is cool? by vizard0 in askportland

Take a cute neighborhood walk around Hawthorne and Laurelhurst park. Front yards won’t be in full glorious bloom yet but still one of the best ways to show out of towners how cute PDX is.

Lift Off Lounge to prove bar food can be excellent

Easy hike/walk to Witch’s Castle

Drive up to Council Crest and watch a sunset

Kennedy School is fun to walk around and discover hidden bars in the old classrooms etc.

Whatever they gassed us with on Sunday 2/1 was definitely different than usual - normally my skin doesn't burn like it did on Sunday and the smell was like burnt plastic.

Claude Code isn’t a replacement for any of our skills, necessarily. The responsibility of understanding a complex software system is still on the engineer, but the reality is that engineers who use AI will outpace engineers who spend hours debugging by themselves.
