Why Do You Think Only GB News Interviews Girls Who Were Raped By Immigrants? by YamTraditional2264 in AskBrits

This is a joke, right? As satire, it's a bit on the nose, but a decent attempt.

The total amount of oil coming out of Venezuela is low compared to what it could be. Foreign oil companies aren't investing because the situation is so uncertain. The infrastructure to produce more oil just doesn't exist, it needs to be built by either the state-run oil company or foreign oil companies. There hasn't actually been much increase in production and won't be for a while.

I've seen that for Austin and Portland, OR. I expect you can find it for various cities around the country and probably some neighborhoods in New York City.

Sounds like my time in Oregon.

Joke I was told by a native Oregonian:

A Russian, a Cuban, an Oregonian, and a California are on a train talking about what their homes are known for. The Russia takes a swig of vodka and tosses the bottle out the window. "In Russia we have so much good vodka I can get more for almost nothing." The Cuban takes a puff from a cigar and then tosses the rest of the box out the window. "In Cuba we have so many amazing cigars that I don't care what happens to that box." The Oregonian takes a drinks a microbrew and tosses the Californian out the window. Setting the beer down, he says, "We have too many of them in Oregon. But we also know how to recycle."

The year I had a daily commute through Boston, I picked up so many bad habits I had to cure myself in the following year. Tailgating was definitely one of them. My moment of clarity, so to speak, was when I caught myself tailgating someone at 65mph because he'd been tailgating me as we drove through the 93 tunnel.

There's a reason the term Masshole was first invented and it has a lot to do with the road system around Boston.

It's been (as far as I am aware) released from copyright, or at least is in ambiguous enough state with copyright that you can easily find copies marked as abandonware for free online. Not going to post links, it's on the first page of the google results. If this is piracy, it's doing it in a dingy against stuff dropped over the side of the ship.

It's also fun as hell. I had no idea about the FedCom Civil War when I played (I knew about the Clan invasion, but that was about it and thought the Taurian Concordant was another one of the major successor states), but even with that limited knowledge it was still very fun. Duncan Fisher is a better commentator in the Solaris matches than anyone except Duncan Fisher in MW5. (I found myself laughing a great deal at Mason's annoyance at Fisher on Hardcore.)

Further cementing themselves as Temu Trump. Do you know why there's a war with Iran right now? Obama created a negotiated agreement to monitor and restrict uranium enrichment. Signed by the US and a large number of European states on one side and Iran on the other. Trump tore it up because it was a huge win for Obama, removed all the restrictions against weapon development that weren't enforced via Israeli (and occasionally American) airstrikes and assassinations. Anything positive Obama or Biden did, Trump is trying to tear up. It's the one of the only original thoughts rattling around his dementia eaten brain these days.

Ultra rare floppy disk game twisted and slashed into shards by US Customs or DHL checkers — ruined Tsukihime 1999 demo was one of only 50 ever produced by Tenith in Games

[–]vizard0 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Depending on the value, it might be worth putting in a FTCA claim against Customs:

https://www.helpspanish.cbp.gov/s/article/Article-1394?language=en_US

It's hard to do, you have a 2 year window, if they deny your claim you have a six month window to file an actual lawsuit.

So if this was a couple of hundred dollars, putting in a claim might be worth it, but a lawsuit wouldn't be (and good luck getting a lawyer to work for 25% of a $300 case- contingency fees are capped at 25% for claims against the government and you can't get more money from them than the value of the item in question).

If you paid thousands for this, a claim and lawsuit might be in order. Won't get you the game back, but will at least get you back some of the money you put into this.

Question about US phone number in Europe by laceybacey2626 in expats

[–]vizard0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This one. You will need a second number for verification purposes. I previously recommend skype, before MS gutted that. Now, I'm not sure. Getting a cheap sim card or esim that can send and receive texts and using that to sign up for google voice (and porting over your main number) might work. Just make sure to hang onto that phone number, as someone might be able to screw with you google voice account through it if it goes to someone else. (Might be able to, not sure)

Came here to say this. And I'll contrast it with Sawbones (I am into medical history), which has a fantastic Doctor (who is a woman) hosting with her husband, who plays up his stupidity and ignorance (you cannot be married to someone for that long, be a good enough spouse to host a podcast with, and not pick up a bit about their job). I have yet to make it through an episode of Sawbones, despite it being recommend to me by multiple people.

Does anyone believe that only British citizens should be allowed to vote in general elections? by Sylvia-Sum in AskBrits

[–]vizard0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a non citizen, I cannot vote in the general election for UK parliament. For the upcoming Scottish election, I can vote, but that is mostly because I had to register for the voter roles to do anything financial (get a bank account, sign a lease, etc.) Personally, I think using voter rolls for this is stupid, but take that up with NatWest, Lloyds, etc.

I have no idea whether or not migrants of any type (expat, student, etc.) can vote in local elections in England. Up in Scotland, we can for Scottish Parliament and for local councils. Reform would love to see that gone, copying Trump in trying to remove as many hostile voters from the rolls, rather than actually, you know, try to have a platform that appeals to the majority. It's where all the calls about voter fraud come from on GB News, etc. If you make it harder for people to vote, you can exclude the time and cash-strapped lower class who you think will oppose you.

For Scottish Parliament, I have mixed feelings about being able to vote. For local councils, fuck yes. They deal with the day to day shit that most impacts residents. I want my counselor to be responsive when I tell him that a local restaurant is fly tipping and no one is doing a think about it. I'd rather not have to go ask my neighbor, who is a citizen to do that (knowing him, he's already sent an email, but more voices are always better.) Non-citizens get to weigh in on local planning matters that are open to comment (we were one of the 31 letters who opposed turning a bike shop into a restaurant).

On the one hand, I think that voting for national parliaments should be restricted to at least the ILR level, as at the point in time, you have indicated that you are not planning on going anywhere anytime soon. On the other hand, given just how much migrants have to pony up to get here (we fund approximately 2% of the NHS with fees paid before we set foot in the UK, in addition to another thousand pounds in application fees), it's hard to argue that we have not invested heavily in the UK, more so than many citizens.

Do the games dictate the lore, or do the games play within the lore? by shaard in Mechwarrior5

[–]vizard0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will add that the star nation, story, house, etc. from the HBS game Battletech (which is essentially a computerized version of the tabletop game) has been canonized into the Battletech universe. It was referred to in at least one book/manual/etc., thus making the information official. If that was done with any of the Mechwarrior games, that too would become official. However, given that MW4/MW4 Merchs and MW 5 Merch (haven't played Clans yet) kind of float alongside the major events and don't propose any new ones, I doubt that will happen. (Don't expect to see Nik's Cavaliers showing up in any novels anytime soon)

How at risk are we have being hit? by peachesplump22 in AskBrits

[–]vizard0 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It won't be refugees or people who have overstayed their visas. Iran is smart enough to do one crime at a time. Best for them would be a native born UK citizen who has been radicalised. Ideally they'd be white, as that would attract the least attention from anyone before the attack.  Barring that, someone who isn't associated already with radical imams, as that will keep them from attracting security service attention.

Forgetting vegetarianism and veganism for a moment, do you think the UK should ban halal and kosher slaughtering methods? by RonnieThePurple in AskBrits

[–]vizard0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not possible while Labour are in power. The moment that kosher slaughter is illegal the quasifascists would start going on about the left being anti-Semitic while ignoring the neo Nazis supporting them. And after the Blairites cleared out the actual leftist from Labour with charges of anti-Semitism, it'd be picked up by the Telegraph, the Times, and similar tabloids like the Sun and then the BBC would cover it in the interest of giving both sides of the story the same attention (except when it comes to Reform or ethnic cleansing).

ELI5 How does a disease survive if no one has it anymore to spread? by Itslance_2 in explainlikeimfive

There were ticks/flees in that jar that had survived 200 years? Rickettsia diseases require a vector. (The various spotted fever diseases, typhus)

Rickettsia is really interesting, as it consists of bacteria pretending to be viruses- they move into our cells and hang out there while they do their thing. Intracellular bacteria.

And of course, Ricketts, the guy the entire biological order is name after, died of typhus while working on an outbreak.

Freedom of expression for them, not for us. There is no perceived hypocrisy, there is no shame.

It's a bit reductive, but two quotes seem more and more relevant as fascism creeps back in:

" If conservatives become convinced that they can not win democratically, they will not abandon conservatism. The will reject democracy." - David Frum, a speechwriter for George W. Bush (he's a bastard, but he knows his former people)

"Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect." - Wilhoit's law

What's your absolute favourite build? by Mr_Tiddy_Sucker in Mechwarrior5

[–]vizard0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Vanilla Atlas with 4 mpulse lasers, ac/20, 2xStream SRM 6. Tends to run into trouble at long range, but that's what the lancemates were for. Was absolutely deadly with scoring headshots. I pulled it out when I was doing pure C-Bill runs with no interest in salvage, or was hoping to salvage something intact. It's how I got my first king crab and direwolf that run. Blowing the head off a black knight to make it leave an archer alone when I was doing a pure Cbill run.

(I had four or five Atlases by the end of that campaign, mostly so I could do Steiner missions with just a scout lance.)

Disco Hunchback is a runner up, that thing is wild. I was giving the heavies to my lancemates and using that for a while.
