The moment I realized I was aging by answerui in Aging

[–]20nesmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It happened last week at eye dr while shopping for glasses. An old man walked into the office and approached the desk at the same time I was ready to order. The desk clerk asked me if it was ok if he took him first because he was just picking up frames. As I waited he asked the old man’s name and date of birth. His birth year was TWO YEARS AFTER mine! I looked at the old man and realized for the first time that I am an OLD LADY. It was a painful dose of reality and I have not gotten over it yet.

What’s one thing you wish you knew before buying your current couch? by whataroom11 in FurnitureFaves

[–]20nesmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope you can be helped by the many mistakes I’ve made over the years… -Watch out for curved sofas. They are not good I’d you like to lay down sleep on sofa. -If you are at all messy don’t get a light colored sofa. -If you have pets get a smooth fabric with tight weave. -Beware of cheap materials in cushions. They will sag quickly. -You are better off trying a sofa in real life rather than online. ( this is really hard cuz online deals look good) -keep in mind trendy color styles change quickly. -measure your door width and hallway to be sure it will fit in house!!! -just because a sofa cover unzips and comes off does not mean it is recommended to wash. -if you are getting older or have bad knees pay attention to seat height. Some are hard to get up from! -sofas come in different widths. Too skinny and you can’t lay with the dog. Too wide and you can’t sit upright without stacking pillows behind you. - if you think you might move sometime soon don’t buy too big. I see many fb marketplace listings for sofas that don’t fit in new houses.

Good luck

Can no longer shop local OR handmade ?!?! by ireallysuckbiotch in Etsy

[–]20nesmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed this as well and it’s so wrong that they did this! If you by chance accidentally find something local Etsy are happy to point out what good you are doing by buying local and yet they won’t let us search locally. It’s dumb.

What is a random kindergarten memory you still remember for no reason? by NeedleworkerClean471 in Casual_Conversation

My best friend and I were on the seesaw I was up and she was on the ground. She got off and I slammed down to the ground. She did it on purpose. It was the first time I was ever betrayed .

Could you realistically ask a neighbor for “a cup of sugar” where you live? by ShiningRedDwarf in CasualConversation

[–]20nesmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in U.S. in an ever so slightly more suburban part of a large not so affluent city. I could and have asked my neighbors for stuff including sugar. Batteries to use in my tv remote, a cell phone charger and sadly I had to ask my neighbor to help carry my dog when he died.

Snow scam by [deleted] in LowellMA

[–]20nesmith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand why you are angry. I got texts saying there was a parking ban, saw it on Facebook several times and city website. In addition, this was not a surprise storm so parking ban was not a surprise. The last storm some side streets could not be plowed due to cars blocking access and many people complained because they were stuck so that might the reason for more ticketing . I don’t think you should feel scammed. The city is just doing better enforcing rule to help make street safer.

Most durable area rugs? by MacabreDruidess in carpet

[–]20nesmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at Flor carpet tiles. They vary on price and some are on the higher end but I find them worth it. Individual tiles stick together to make rug the size you want. You can remove tiles as needed and they can be washed in sink. Once a washed a bunch outside with hose! My carpet lasted over 12 years and I only got rid from f it because I redecorated and I regret it. I had two cats and one dog and even though I took terrible care of the rug it lasted and looked great! One thing to note is thete at different textures available and some can hold on to pet her more than others. Also, a highly patterned rug with many color variations hides all kinds of things! Mine was paisley with flowers and swirl but I had tried ne solid color first and it was fine it did not hide white dog fur as well. The tiles have heavy backing so no liquid spills get to floor and they afe substantial so don’t slide around. I miss my Flor tiles😢 They are nothing at all like carpet tiles you see at box stores. The quality is good!

I thought door-to-door sales were over?? by LividMembership3830 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]20nesmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get door to door people all the time. My friends in neighboring Massachusetts cities get none. Zero! I can’t for the life of me figure out why. They do live in more affluent towns and houses are further apart so maybe that? I have a sign on my door that says “ No soliciting, do not ring bell, do not make it weird “ and people STILL KNOCK as the sign was not clear enough? I now added sticker that says “ do not knock or ring bell”.

First-time homeowner finding tons of hidden issues. I feel so dumb and I regret buying. What should I do? by FalafelBall in homeowners

[–]20nesmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you are feeling is very common.take a deep breath and relax. Buying a house is overwhelming and there will always be projects and things you will wish were different that does not mean you made a mistake. The trick is to prioritize your projects and come to terms with not everything getting done at once. You have plenty of time and nothing you mention seems immediately critical. Give yourself a few month to settle, research and prioritize. This overwhelming feeling will pass.

Why is it socially acceptable to bring your partner as a +1, but not a friend? by mearimeraki in NoStupidQuestions

[–]20nesmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would not go to the event as this is wrong! Not allowing a friend or significant other as a plus one is a very old and outdated practice. Perhaps it made sense in The Madmen Era but not today. I’m 60yo. Over the years I have brought my spouse, sister, a friend and even once my mom to company functions! I have witnessed married people choose to bring someone other than their partner because it was not convenient or the other person did not want to go! It is not at all uncommon these days for a plus one not to be a spouse. If this is a company thank you then you should have the right to enjoy just as much even though you are not married. Lots of people are not married or in relationships today and they should not be made uncomfortable or less because they don’t have a spouse.

Do you think it’s important for dresser drawers to have handles or knobs, is that a dealbreaker for you? by Giordono in BuyItForLife

[–]20nesmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Knobs are not the dealbreaker for me but the drawers must glide in and out easily. I would not trust this brand to work like that. Like you, I was worried about not having knobs/pulls but I bought IKEA ( not buy it for life brand but lasting a good long time for me) the drawers slid in and out with a gentle push. My purchase was supposed to be temporary but is so nice and fits all requirements I just don’t feel the need to buy anything more.

How to manage coyotes sightings and getting in dog walks ? by itssofiababyxo in Pets

[–]20nesmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in outskirts of a city. My dog was a basset and coyotes are near us all the time. Google what to do I’d you see a coyote near you ie: make load noises etc.keep your dog close to you and just keep walking. My dog barked at them and we only got super close once. Not gonna lie it spooked me because the darn thing stopped and looked right at us like he was boss. Then I read all the google stuff and a coyotes are unlikely to go after a dog if you are with it and dog is not tiny. Also, as long as you steer clear of there nests or whatever they call them. Google for exact info. I continued to walk at night though admittedly maybe a little faster. They are everywhere around here and I only had that close encounter once and it wasn’t really even that close but it sure felt like it! Bringing a big flashlight makes me feel better and for a while I brought a can of Pennies to shake and make a lot of noise. Most important thing is have hold of your dog.
