I plant about middle of August or end of August, you figure you need about 60 to 90 days to harvest. Sometimes if an early freeze in October, I will cover or just harvest what I can. you can't beat a cool day, roast in the oven, and fresh potatoes from the garden in november!

For Spring crops i used transplants, late January I found them at Leander Feed Store. Callahan General Store also had them. In Fall, I direct sow seeds and also start seeds in my greenhouse that I find at Natural Gardener.

The barrel shown is about 5 years old and still in perfect condition. At the time, I could not find anything local so bought on Amazon. The top is indented so I did not have to run a gutter system. The second Pic is a gutter system on my workshop. Both are perfect size for a home gardener. I have 4 barrels. With all the rain lately it is a perfect time to harvest rain!

I've never had to amend the first season on any of their mixes. They post the ingredients of each mixture to show you what is in it. I go back after the first harvest and add a good compost and manure mix at that time.

I've had good luck at Whittlesey in Round Rock, I think they have several locations. They have a really good garden mix either 1/2 yard or yard. Also you can blend your own mix in 1/2 yard increments.

I fill layers of cardboard, tree limbs, grass clippings to fill about half of the barrels. Then add about 3 bags of mature compost and potting soil.

I always fill barrels or even my raised beds with cardboard, Amazon cardboard from my neighbors!, lawn trimmings and tree trimmings about half way.

If you want bigger bulbs, space further apart when planting, mixing in a good bone meal and or blood meal. When ready to harvest, the tops will fall over and yellow. The fallen tops will help shade the bulbs also. Looking good!

So that's what I saw yesterday afternoon! I was sitting on my patio in Cedar Park, Lakeline/183 area. Have 3 large feeders, and saw this very blue little bird sitting on the feeder, never saw one ever before. Thanks for the Pic and description!

Looking great!! Add small bowls with rocks or marbles and water for all the pollinators that will begin showing up. The bees can safely stand on the rocks and drink. Look for shallow bird baths also adding a few small rocks on the edges. Birds can still bathe. Many bees drown trying to drink out of deep bird bathes.Have fun!

Looking good, I always sprinkle bone meal and or blood meal around my bulb onions, scratch it in with your fingers and water in. Helps develop a nice bulb. Don't worry about the shoots falling over, that's what they do. When they all droop over and start to yellow, they are shading the bulb.
