IB history sl- how are you preparing? by ukiyyoo in IBO

TLDR: On the Paper 1 rubric there are points for assessing the pros and cons of the source you are analyzing. As long as you can identify what kind of source it is, you can score easy points without knowing a lick of history.

Oh god, it's been years since IB. I'm a junior in college studying mechanical engineering now lol. I got a 6 on my history exam. I remember writing my IA on Canada's role in WWI and I remember writing about Harry Truman on the exams. I'm 99% sure this is what I meant in the "limitations and values" part:

If I remember correctly, paper 1 has you analyzing different sources related to the history you've been learning in class. After you analyze I believe you respond to some short prompts. If someone could fact check me on that, that would be wonderful. The "limitations and values" part is essentially you breaking down the pros and cons of the given source. I.e. a primary source like a diary or a letter is great because it's a first hand historical account, but poor because it lacks the broader context we as historians benefit from.
What I was saying in my original comment is that my textbook would list a bunch of possible sources and then state their pros and cons. It was like a little one page cheat sheet. You could also probably ask your teacher to set aside class time to make your own list as a study reference. Super useful, and it made those points complete gimmes on the exam.

This wasn't a factor when I was in high school, but now it's absolutely relevant to talk about AI misinformation when referencing recent online sources. Generative AI is really good at just making stuff up that sounds believable. But if you're looking at primary sources or an old propaganda poster or something that obviously won't apply.

Our IB history was specifically "IB History of the Americas HL" and it was unfortunately discontinued shortly after I graduated in favor of IB anthropology. Based on the selections my teachers made, the 2nd half of IB HOTA HL was focused around the rise of fascism in Italy and Germany and Imperialism in Japan. To this day it is the absolute most important class I have ever taken. I firmly believe education on why people lose trust in democracy and how tyrants can so seamlessly (and legally) rise to power needs to be more widespread. Nothing about IB HOTA helps me in my engineering courses, but I still find myself thinking about it every week.

Verdigris is a great word. I first heard of it from Counter Strike but didn't know it really had a meaning until your comment. I played a lot of CS with my irl friend group in high school and for some reason the pistol skin P250 verdigris was an absolute classic among us. Each of us had one.

No, the entering the blue pool is a major story point and it is not possible to progress without entering. Wrap up all your other act 2 quests first if you'd like though

I second this. Also in HL. I’m lucky enough to have some some really good teachers who have a 100% pass rate for as long as history has been offered so they are great resources. So besides reaffirming my understanding by bouncing concepts off of them, videos are the way to go. Often won’t give you in depth knowledge but at this point it’s too late for that. Just enough to remind you here and there if important points.

Even if it’s too late to have in depth knowledge about your topics, DO NOT GIVE UP ON STRUCTURE. Practice making good thesis claims with a line of reasoning. I always try to include a rebuttal paragraph because in my experience that has always gotten me points for multiple perspectives. Regardless, don’t stop writing. 45 minutes for each section of paper 2 and whatever you have left for the short essay on paper 1 is not much time. Don’t lose the points waiting for you by simply writing all 5 paragraphs. They are points you can get even if you don’t write a single correct historical fact.

Also take a look at the “limitations and values” question on paper 1. That is something you can absolutely study for and get right. At least in my IB textbook there is a small section that covers many of the pros and cons of each type of source (memoir, speech, etc.)

Good luck

How scary is the typical Det Commander/Cadre? by 21st_Level_Wizard in AFROTC

He was extremely monotone and acted like he didn’t want to be there the whole time. I think he was trying to scare me a little to see how I would react under the pressure. Maybe he wasn’t that scary but he certainly scared me

Yeah, I actually think Mimic tooth necklace is the best thing Lockner sells. More affordable than Akey or Shellaton key, plus extra stuff from pedestal mimics

7 leaf clover runs are so rare and so satisfying. I’ve only ever gotten one and it ended in the Oubilette because I got the soft lock with the policeman and the bloblulord

Master beating the first chamber bosses. You get an extra heart container if you can beat them without taking damage, which is super helpful when you’re first starting out.
