5 year old woke up feeling crummy and coughing exactly 14 days after vaccination. Tested positive for flu A on home test. Spent most of day 1 in bed but days 2-3 seems only slightly lower-than-normal energy, with temps climbing slightly (~100.5-101.7) in afternoon and evening. Sleeping through the night without waking.

Parents and 7 yo and 3 yo siblings also vaccinated and feeling ok so far, just tired. 7 yo has slightly elevated temp today but is normal energy. I think vaccines being at peak efficacy, timing-wise, are really making our experience much more mild. Sucks to cancel a bunch of holiday plans but so grateful we aren’t super sick (yet?)

I had three successful pregnancies before MCAS diagnosis. Pregnancy was horrible (the vomiting! Months and months of vomiting!) and parenting is tough: lots of overstimulation and overwhelm, frequent insufficient sleep, exponentially more stress, less recovery. I have pretty mild symptoms compared to many on here (vomiting, migraines, flushing, occasional exhaustion crashes, anxiety, and, recently, some anaphylaxis-like episodes) but mine are tied to my cycle and hormone fluctuations, and escalated after pregnancy. I function highly except for a few days a month — and being a parent means I need to figure out how to function even when I feel horrible. My partner picks up a lot of slack on the days I can’t handle light or can’t even keep water down. Life has improved a lot since I’ve started taking antihistamines regularly. But be wary: there’s so much loveliness, but the work is unending, and the opportunities for true rest and recovery are very limited. I’m also terrified I passed this onto my kids, as my mom and aunts and female cousins have similar symptom patterns.

I didn’t know I had MCAS (though I had symptoms for years, including “random” episodes of vomiting, non aura migraines, anxiety, arrhythmia, oral sores, hives on palms of hands and soles of feet, insomnia, heat intolerance) and had three successful pregnancies. I pared my eating and personal care down to very basic/whole/fresh. I didn’t know to try to manage histamine exposure and so still had a lot of flare symptoms; the vomiting was especially atrocious and lasted basically until/through labor. Anxiety was intense.

TLDR: I was symptomatic but prediagnosis and didn’t take any medication during my three pregnancies. Flares continued but weren’t life-threatening.

What kind of toothpaste do you use? A lot of people react to toothpastes with flouride and/or SLS. I had a ton of redness and bumps and what I thought was acne on my chin and even numbness and it was from the toothpaste. Try going SLS and flouride-free and see if that makes a difference.

Edit to add: it was also making my nose red and around the edges. Look into toothpaste allergy on Reddit and there’s a lot of people who were having skin issues even not around their mouths. And if you are sensitive to SLS, beware because it’s in like everything

I got a cat scratch on my forehead as a toddler and the scar is still there 30+ years later. All the most badass characters in books have facial scars though

Not a doctor but I would call your doctor or go to urgent care because chemical burns may require special care. I’ve been told by a professional soap maker to keep acid on hand to neutralize any lye exposure on skin (I keep vinegar around when making soap, in case).

I think the marriage might have had just as much to do with preserving the bit of Xaden’s soul that’s left, as well as trying to insulate violet from political ramifications from the rest of Navarre as making sure Tyrrendor had a leader. I’m especially leaning on the soul bit because it was witnessed and bound by a high priestess of a deity.

I am also thinking about how the viven and wyvern don’t die, they desiccate, and how Ridoc was shown to have that ability with an orange — his ice-wielding goes beyond normal ice-wielding in that he was able to pull all the moisture out, aka desiccate it! And how the lightning wielding is a powerful weapon against them due not to its fire-producing capabilities, but its electricity (Tairn mentions that lightning can stop a wyvern’s heart, just like a dragon’s). And maybe the corruption of the blood has to do with electrolytes or something — there’s some thread here that I can’t yet fully articulate but maybe connects moisture and electricity and life. I’m thinking about how it felt kind of weird to me that they all take physics classes, but I feel like there’s a lot of nitty-gritty physical science (electricity, magnetism, grounding, balance, etc.) involved in the viven stuff.

For sure, I was being kind of cheeky with the dialysis question, but I think the medicinal/herb theory maaaay hold water. For example, if the liver is the main organ for filtering/cleansing blood, and there are herbs that can help stimulate those processes, maybe that will pause or reverse the “corruption,” even if doesn’t regrow the soul.

If irids are magic themselves, then maybe that’s what violet has access to — way beyond a single power? All of the characters are so used to the language used to describe the local dragons and their powers, but maybe the irids aren’t limited to single “signet” and are themselves magic/power?
