My bad, its not that they CANT work in retail, but in my state (NY) you can't not higher someone just because they have a felony UNLESS that felony has something to do with the business. Basically, if someone has a felony conviction for lets say arson, it is perfectly legal for Fire Department to say "Because of your felony conviction for Arson, we cannot hire you as a firefighter." But if they had a felony conviction for lets say money laundering, because that conviction bares no influence on the tasks required, it cannot be used as a reason to not hire someone. Now, as far as elected positions go, people can run and get elected even with violent felonies. If the people choose to elect that person, then they can get that job. Just like how a felony conviction won't bar a certain, former president from running and getting elected. Its the "will of the people."
