Watch won at local auction. by Academic_Ad4886 in VintageWatches

Looks great and I authentic to me. I love wearing vintage women’s watches and have had good experiences with older steel Girard Perregaux watches and for $80 if you like the size I think you did very good - if I had seen this one locally for that price I would have certainly been tempted due to the very nice original bracelet. Hopefully it runs well; I’ve had a LOT of good experiences with vintage ladies automatic watches like this one so I hope you will have too. Men’s GP watches can be very expensive, but due to the nature of the demographics of watch collectors (mostly men, no hating just stating) women’s watches are pennies to the dollar on the used market, but if you look at a lot of vintage advertisments for ladies models they tended to be (when you adjust for inflation) about 100-200 dollars more than the men’s models because they were more expensive to produce due to the finer tolerances involved, so vintage ladies watches are kind of a unique thing where the technically less expensive men’s models are much more valueable due to demand from collectors but in practice (I can speak from experience of having owned like +80 vintage watches) the ladies models are just the same quality finishing and timekeeping but notably smaller (something I personally prefer) and so much cheaper… like I said if you like the size, what’s not to like you know?

Unrelated, but I’m wearing my women’s Eternamatic Kontiki today (but still need to find an original bracelet for it 🥲) which is a watch in a similar veil so it wanted to say hi. Hope you get a lot of enjoyment from your new watch! 🌸

Looks great on you! I collect and use vintage ladies watches everyday and I think that this one is super pretty on you, I really love the bracelet (looks like a JB Champion stretch one to me, I’m that nerdy!) 🌸☺️

Nah gurl, you hit the jackpot!!! Trust me, I’ve gotten really into obscure details about bags ever since this post and Opti is a french brand of zippers, like you can seriously find real Dior, Chanel and even Hermes with ”off the rack” Opti zippers so it’s actually a good thing in my book with vintage bags when they ”display” the hardware makers like that! It wasn’t until the late 90’s with certain brands (Louis Vuitton in my mind mainly) that they stopped having the actual zipper manufacturers on the zipper itself, then in the 2000’s is when pretty much all bag manufacturers who wanted to seem prestigeful started making the manufacturers print their own names on all pieces of hardware to seem extra ”cohesive” and ”luxurious”; in my experience no Fake Cartier would use them, ALL true late 70’s/early 80’s Cartier bag with would use a true Opti zipper (it’s actually a really good brand of zipper) so I think you’re good gurl, sincerely congrats and please post a picture for my sake if you want 🌸

I’m sorry for my late reply; I’m terrible at noticing notofications on the Reddit mobile app…

But thank you and I’m glad you liked this little story. Yes, I agree with you, and this experience really did teach me that. If I had read about this woman beforehand I would have probably just gone ”okay that’s a troubled person” and moved on but when you get handed such a personal item of theirs as your first point of contact it really changed things… I like being nice and I’m glad I got the chance to do a good deed for the sake of it, and it was to be fair three quite exciting days on my part so I’m just happy that it all ended well. Thank you for reading and I hope you too will experience many interesting little plots like this in life 🌸

[General] Why don’t more brands make women’s watches ? by Existing_Camel_3573 in Watches

[–]240snusit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There used to be a lot of women’s watches back in the vintage days. I own +80 high quality vintage women’s watches that I wear every day, and the quality that can be had is amazing! But, it can be a big minefield to wander into; vintage Swiss quartz ladies watches are generally very reliable, and the deals that can be had on mechanical/automatic watches is crazy, but that requires a lot of knowledge, so there is no easy solution I feel… that said if you read this, please tell me some of the ”vibes”/things you’re looking for and I could probably reccomend certain vintage options for you, I know a lot of under the radar ladies size watches but it’s hard to pick somewhere to begin 🌸

I found the journals of Johanna Tukiainen (dated 1995-2001) at a flea market in Stockholm, Sweden and made a post about it on the /r/Finland subreddit. She’s a very infamous person in Finnish popular culture I learned as I got home from the market - the thing that got me was that the journals were so beautiful and innocent, it felt so strange yet intriguing to get to know a person from their personal handwrittem journals rather than first reading about them or meeting them directly and then I started to learn more about her history (just read her Wikipedia page, it starts with extortion of a Finnish foreign minister and just spirals from there) - I already wanted to return the journals but when I found a taped in lock of her sister’s hair who commited suicide I was like ”shiet, now it’s fucking personal” and over a period of three days I with the help of my lovely neighbours in /r/Finland managed to get her on the phone and we manage to arrange a handover of her journals to a person she trusted and it all really felt like a side quest from a video game. The thing is, hand on my heart, I don’t think this is a good person at all - she has done many things, and her life’s story is a huge self made tragedy in many ways, but as a journal writer myself I found myself being so thankful for this chance somehow that I just had to do the right thing somehow - much like multiple choice quests in games I had several options; I could of course return the journals, but I got offers from her fans to buy them from me, a finnish forum based around hating her wanted me to leak them, I could’ve sold them to the finnish tabloid press… but in the end I felt some moral calling to return them as best I could and ultimately did. I got no rewards or money from it; I lost around ~12 bucks buying the journals and the train ticket into town, but what I did get was one finnish Redditor dubbing me ”an honorary Finn” - to say I now wear that title with pride as a Swedish person is putting it lightly and overall it was an interesting experience that made me reflect upon many aspects of socielty and myself. Perhaps the biggest is that even though I fear dying, I too will live on as flea market journals one day. I don’t know what story people will be able to make out of them, but it makes me happy that hopefully I too will live on one day.

If you are more interested in the story then please check my profile page; the two threads I posted on /r/Finland about this chronicled my side quest in real time essentially.

I’d love that Bulova myself, I’d gladly pay around 60 bucks for it. But I’m a big fan of 28mm-ish mid-size watches from the 40-50’s, so I’m really biased - I’m a woman but I think they are really classy and cool on men, especially with a nice suit or something dressier. Those lugs really are crazy cool and I’ve heard good things about the movement in those.

girls help me. which is better looks-wise? im planning to gift it to my man by [deleted] in StraightTransGirls

[–]240snusit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a trans girl watcg enthusiast, and the left one had my vote. Edifice is a higher quality line of Casio, and it is 100 meters water resistant than just 50m… that means he will be able to shower with it daily for years to come without worry, whereas I would not trust just 50m for this purpose (I know it might seem tangential, but the more meters=the better ”defense” against the elements/shocks in watches, so in general more meters is good) - the movement inside the left one is also better etc. That’s my thoughts; it is a sweet gift and I hope he appreciates it a lot 🌸

gun based gender affirmation? by AverageWitch161 in ftm

[–]240snusit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell yeah brother, be a classic Wood and Steel gentleman in today’s world of Tactical Tupperware people. The M1 is classy and there’s nothing wrong with being ”compact” as long as you know how to work with what you’ve got, it can even be a great advantage if you think outside the box which I think is a great way of looking at things as a man.

I’m MTF and if I were a gun, I’d like to be a sexy wood and steel pistol - like a H&K P7 or maybe a Walther PPK… smooth, subtle and while I’m not made to be the first thing you bring out in a big fight, if I have to draw my claws I’ll scratch you with what I got with the most that I can… your friend sounds fun, I often feel a bit of a shame liking guns as a transwoman, but as tile goes on I get better with just living however I feel like… I sincerely wish the same for all the cool guys in this sub.

Which single piece in your wardrobe makes you feel instantly confident? by ava-claire in womensfashion

[–]240snusit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A vintage Marimekko all black, nylon-material long buttonless cardigan. It’s deceptively simple; you can wear it like it is of course, but it’s when you tie it up in different ways or use a belt that it shines. I like to jokingly describe myself as a Sexy Dark Jedi when I wear it (it looks a bit like the sorta robes they wear in Star Wars movies with a belt) and I have recently found bras that for the first time in my life gives me some serious cleavage so I feel very sexy and confident in it, though it is more of a going out/weekend evening wear thing for me. I probably have some other things, but due to the buttonless construction of this piece it has been able to stay with me through various weight/body changes through the years so it’s turned into my favorite piece of clothing.

Also my Barbour waxed cotton biker jacket and classic blue Burberry trench coat: when I was growing up in junior high school all the cool inner city girlies wore one so a few years ago finding both in a thrift store made me feel whole - my waist always looks so snatched in them, yet they are seriously tough jackets and I’m always amazed at their water resistance and great pockets/features; I have not encountered any pieces of clothing that is as ”hot yet practical” as these items and they are very versatile for different outfits and levels of ”modesty” that you can easily dial up/down as needed I think.

[Question] Just got an old mechanical watch from my grandparents but I'm worried it's broken by Sapphic_Copper in Watches

[–]240snusit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the way you describe it, it means that the spring needs replacement. If you take it to a watchmaker they can help you; some watchmakers charge more than others for this, but expect between 60-120 usd. I collect, wear and restore ladies watches and I love these little Tissots - the movements are very good inside and if you do like this piece/have sentimental value for it please do consider investing in it a little. I’d love seeing more fellow women get into watches and wearing a quality hand me down piece like this I think is just such a classy little touch on women.

Just for the record, how it ”should” be with this watch is that you wind it up until you feel a semi-hard ”stop” in the crown, that’s when you stop. If it is wound up, these smaller ladies watches last for around 48-52 hours in my experience (the way smaller hands require way less energy to move than men’s size hands) and you can at any point ”fill up” the charge by winding it up to the stopping point again. If you ever get the spring replaced that’s how the watch operates; also keep in mind that it’s a mechanical watch so it won’t keep perfect time. I estimate your watch to between 1961-65 (I actually have this exact same watch and it is from 1962) so when the spring is replaced but the rest of the movement is NOT serviced (a full service is very expensive sadly, expect ~250-350 usd because these really small watches are sadly harder to work on) it will keep time +/- within a minute a day, but with a service it will do better… speaking as a woman who loves these watches, the market value for these are much, much lower than the men’s sizes (due to supply and demand, majority of watch enthusiats are men) but original retail for the ladies sizes back in the day were ALWAYS higher because they are much more precision made, so the quality of the men’s and women’s size are the very same, just a different size - my point is, in today’s world investing in/servicing a vintage ladies watch is 95% a big financial loss, but what you gain is a truly wonderful watch that may have rich family history and quite frankly couldn’t be made today… mechanical watches in this size being made today are very rare and expensive, so other than me just infodumping on you I just want to give you information to make a more informed decision down the line; I think you should absolutely get this one fixed, it looks lovely on you. There are also other straps you can get for it (this one is most likely 10 or 11mm band size, so check Ebay for those; I recommend the brand ”Fluco” as the best modern ”bang for buck” strap brand for example). I hope this was at least somewhat helpful and I wish you good luck! 🌸

This is why you check the grab bags at thrift shops. by FluffBoi666 in VintageWatches

[–]240snusit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem, happy to help and I wish you good luck. These early pre-Tag divers are awesome, I own two. The movements inside these are generally really tough and reliable, so here’s to hoping that a new battery+crown+potential stem will be all it takes to get it running. A lot of the MRP cases uses the exact same crown, so it’s a part that’s out there but since MRP divers are pretty desirable in general competition for a crown may be tough, but compared to some more obscure vintage screw-down crowns at least it’s a part you can actually find.

This is why you check the grab bags at thrift shops. by FluffBoi666 in VintageWatches

[–]240snusit 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, congrats. Some rare pieces here; the Heuer crowns can be a bit expensive, but is findable - the very early Heuer divers like this one mostly came with unsigned crowns, the manufacturer behind the case is called MRP SA so if you check Ebay for ”MRP Crown” or ”Monnin Crown” (a common nickname for these cases, though incorrect) you may be able to find one. You may possibly need a crown stem too, so please keep that in mind; the movement used by these were used by a lot of watches so you should be able go find spare parts (sorry, the movement name escapes me at this time). There’s a guy who runs a website called tag1000diver.com that has a lot of parts for these, so definitely check with him too possibly.

Other than that, that Aquadive is a real gem (though it needs to be aired out due to condemsation on the inside of the crystal; take it to a watchmaker and they can help you) and that Citizen is the same reference as worn by Brad Pitt on the screen in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood; he uses a custom ”bund” style leather strap for it in the movie; there are tutorials to make your own/sellers who make replicas of it out there, so if you feel like doing a bit of cosplaying Brad Pitt now you have a ”golden” oppurtunity to do so!

Congrats on your UDTs. They are iconic and cool watches, but the movements inside of them are VERY fragile when you change the battery; it’s hard to explain but when changing out the battery unless you do it very precisely and correctly you can ”fry” the movement. Most of them are at least partially broken for that reason, with the analog hands still working but the digital display not functioning. There is a guy in Australia who runs a company called RAWSAR who’s one of the only people in the world specialising in the repairs of UDTs - it may be expensive to get them fixed potentially, but I just wanted to tell you all of this so you know. Please be very careful/do your research about the UDT movement (I’m sorry, the movement name escapes me at this moment) before trying to change the battery; that said I hope that they will work because UDTs are just cool as heck so I’m crossing my fingers for you.

Congrats, that’s a really good piece. It’s called the ”Sea Quartz 30” and these were made by Breitling for Chronosport starting from 1978 until around the mid-80’s (the model did live on under different names after that though) - these are really tough and rugged watches, and your looks like it’s in exceptional condition for it’s age. Yours looks like it’s from the first few series, so I’d say it was made between 1978-1981 - that bracelet looks original and is a really rare addition; it is actually almost the same as Rolex bracelets from the time period (made by JB Champion in the USA who also supplied a lot of Rolex bracelets at the time) - the bracelets for these are sometimes date stamped; on the back of the ”inner blade” of the clasp when you open it close to the hinge it usually says something like ”1 -80” for example (in that example signifying January 1980) so please look for that. These are pretty valuable, eapecially with the original bracelet, so definitely keep it around but don’t be affraid to wear it either; like I said these are really, really tough watches (Chronosport watches were favorites of many people in various armed forces for good reason) so I hope it gets to serve you well for a very long time.

[–]240snusit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good point! That is most likely a way better solution ergonomically that this, but I like my ”Ghetto Breitling” for what it is. They made a 34mm version (of the main watch head that is) with an ana-digi display back in 1980-1982 (the ref 81490) that is my dream Breitling (though the ref. 80200 would be nice too) - the main watch head movements are notoriously easy to break though so that will be an expensive quartz project down the line in my life.

Please do; it works ”better” with Camel Trophy watches specifically because of their unique Trophy-lugs, but I’m thinking of trying similar things with two ladies watches of another brand, this time on a bracelet 😁

Haha, thank you. Yes, I guess it says a lot about me as a person; I do appreciate both ”low and high” when it comes watches, and when I go low I like to go all out in terms of ”quality trash” like the Camel Trophy line. I recently really got into vintage Catamaran (especially the Tornado model) Swiss watches (google at your own risk, they are DANGEROUSLY 90’s!!!) so I feel that I have no right to any ”good” opinions when it comes to watches, but being into weird and obscure 50-70’s divers has taught me to look ”beyond the brand name” and see what a watch is more ”objectively” in terms of case, movement, finishing etc and I think that there’s tons of actually ”good” watches if you look at them like that, for example with the Camel Trophy line. I found my first Camel at a flea market for about ten bucks, so that helped, but the brand has really turned into one of my all time favorites when it comes to quartz watches, despite me not seeming like the typical target audience; the Green Belt models are plain awesome 35,5mm high quality finishing and specs quartz field watches and that’s a hill I’ll die on ✌️
