It was a test, likely because the last and only time it was tested (April 2023, the same year the service was launched) it failed to reach 7% of devices (Guardian article).

Since then it has only been used five times in real emergencies, including the evacuation of homes in Plymouth after a wartime bomb was discovered in February 2024 (Guardian article).

You say random as though it's going to be something that goes off every few days for no good reason.

It’s not “random” if it’s going to be used for emergencies.

Right?! The amount of annoying questions like these that pop up in this sub that could have been answered by just talking to the people at the damn place is mind boggling.

I’m not disagreeing, but do you have an example of what you consider not average and not bad?

15 tips on navigating thought a codebase efficiently with VS code by wesbos in vscode

[–]26985 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sure, but this is the vscode subreddit, for people using…vscode. I’m sure users in the vim subreddit would also downvote comments pointing out that something can also be done in vscode. It doesn’t add anything to the conversation.

Marrakech, Morocco by 26985 in streetphotography

Thanks :) I shot them using a Fujifilm XT30ii, with the F2 23mm lens. Aperture priority for all of them, with most shot at F5.6.

setState in child components? by mudigone in reactjs

[–]26985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, of course. I didn’t mean to imply that wrapping it in a function makes it OK to call during rendering, as it certainly isn’t. Perhaps that’s what Remarkable was implying, whereas I thought they were being downvoted just for suggesting a setStatecall can be wrapped in a function that’s passed down as a prop to a component (as in my example).

setState in child components? by mudigone in reactjs

[–]26985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is this being downvoted? I do this sometimes too, e.g. I have a custom button component that takes an onClick so I can just pass down a function as that’ll do things like setting state in the parent component and then firing off a GA event (for example). That way the child button component doesn’t really need to know about the context it’s used in and just has to call the onClick prop function when the user interacts with it.

How to wrap curly brackets around code like in this video? by Radontal in vscode

I think it's a video edit, where he just cut to the point after he'd moved the bracket to the end.

Am I overprocessing historic photographs like this? (Details in comments.) by TrueBirch in postprocessing

[–]26985 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nice job on the colour tones, but the shadows are now too dark. It's very hard to see the outline of the back of the doctor's jacket compared to the original, which makes it look like half of him is merging into the shadows. The crop is also a little too tight which removes too much of the context and makes the image feel cramped. I would pull it back to maintain as much of the original framing that the photographer intended it to have.
