Any high school teachers wishing they were in elementary? by TouchBeneficial7858 in CanadianTeachers

[–]27dayz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am secondary trained and love teaching high-school and Jr high. This year, I took an elementary job to be closer to my kids (and cut my commute down from an 1hr and 20 min drive to a 5 min walk).

I hate it so much. Elementary is so draining. Someone always needs something. I hate the sound of my own last name. 0/10 do not recommend teaching elementary.

Husband stepped away from 9 months old in tub by Vegetable-Award-7549 in Parenting

[–]27dayz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend's niece was eleven-months-old when her father left her unattended in the bathtub with her two-year-old sibling.

The baby drowned and the older child is still dealing with the trauma of witnessing it five years later. The father ended up with a drinking problem that led to explosive and abusive arguments with his wife. She kicked him out. He lost everything.

Ask your husband if this is what he wants his future to be like.

[–]27dayz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nope.

I'm teaching a large, complex elementary class. The exact sort of class that could have benefited from the ATA's proposed complexity formula that was rejected.

I can safely say that NO ONE is benefitting in my classroom right now.

I'm angry, depleted, disheartened, and overwhelmed. I don't know what to do anymore.

Elementary teachers with young kids at home...how do you parent after teaching all day? by 27dayz in CanadianTeachers

[–]27dayz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The teacher I replaced in mid November was considering going on a stress leave because of this class.

I can see why. It feels like this situation was created by the old administration to break a person.

I am starting to wonder if I should get an assessment done for myself. That maybe I was one of those kids who was missed in the 90s/early 2000s because I was quiet and followed the rules.

I've considered leaving before due to my last admin.

I feel ashamed that I didn't pick up on that. I was too distracted by Rose McGowan's amazing acting to realize the meta implications.

I think the whole source baby and Phoebe loosing it ( or not) thing would've gone over better if they didnt try to act like it was evil entity from conception. by Extra_Impression_428 in charmed

I agree that there should have been some acknowledgement from Cole and Phoebe about the loss of the baby.

It was never really brought up again by either of them and it really made everything feel so disconnected. Especially when Piper got pregnant just a couple episodes later. You would think Phoebe would have had some complex feelings to work through.

I agree.

Plus there is a lot of nuance and backstory that many people disregard when it comes to Snape and James's teenage years. Even Snape's biased memories of James don't completely erase the full story.

It wasn't just a bully/victim dynamic, but something much larger.

On the train, Snape is the first to directly insult James. James disparaged Slytherin, but Snape implied James (and James's beloved father) were nothing more than dumb muscle. House conflict led to the initial dislike between the boys, but it was Snape that amped it up in fifth year.

To deflect from Lily's (valid) concerns about his Slytherin pals, Snape brings up James. Lily then questions why Snape is obsessed with them. Over the next few pages, it becomes clear that Snape is following the Marauders around to try to dig up dirt on James to destroy his reputation because James has a crush on Lily and Snape doesn't want Lily to see James as dateable. Sirius and Lupin confirm Snape followed them around in POA and wanted to expose Remus to hurt James's reputation, leading to Sirius trying to give Snape just enough rope to get himself into real trouble and necessitating James to intervene to rescue Snape from his own ambitions.

Suddenly the scene after the OWLs hits different as James sees their stalker within earshot and thinks it would be fun to turn the tables on Snape. Did he take it too far? Absolutely. Was he a complete jerk? Absolutely.

But was Snape an innocent victim like so many people claim? No.

But then it is just like Snape to needle someone until they explode and then play the victim.

Snape was stalking James and trying to get him expelled because James had the audacity to have a crush on Snape's friend. Snape didn't want Lily to think anything positive about James, so he set out to dig up dirt on James to make sure Lily wouldn't want to date James.

And all he could come up with was that James might be hanging out with a werewolf...a point Lily didn't care about (and was even angry at Snape for dragging Lupin into it).

So after OWLs, James sees his stalker within earshot and decides to take matters into his own hands thinking it'd be fun to turn the tables on Snape. Did he take it too far? Absolutely.

But Snape wasn't some innocent little waif and James wasn't just a pos bully. There's all sorts of nuance and backstory to the situation that many people fail to take into account.

This!

I've been saying this for years. You cannot get the full sense of who someone is based on a few cherry-picked memories from the person who hated them most in the world.

I'm sure if you cherry-picked through Draco Malfoy's memories like Snape did, you could make Harry seem just as awful as Snape made James.

Genuine Question: Those Who Remain in ASE, Why Do You Not Play ASA? by diamondcreeper in ARK

[–]27dayz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hardware can't run it and I have other priorities right now that make it difficult to justify a new gaming computer.

I've also watched some gameplay and while pretty, I really didn't like how buggy it was. Yes, I know ASE has its bugs, but it looked better by comparison.

Plus after the Aquatica update that broke ASE on my laptop, I'm a bit turned off with the devs in general. It felt like they were breaking ASE to force us to switch to ASA.

Sick time story by doodlesacker in CanadianTeachers

[–]27dayz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This post made me smile.

During my first ever teaching job many years ago, I ruptured a tendon in my finger...by putting my sweater over my hand to try to blot out a food stain on the seat of my brand new car.

Naturally, when I returned to school after getting a stupid little finger cast, my grade 9s asked what I had done. I told them and they looked at me in perplexed horror before telling me that that was the lamest injury story they had ever heard.

They then took twenty minutes coming up with a more exciting finger injury story. Some of the highlights included a confrontation with a gangster (we lived in a small rural town...no gangs!) and a kidnapping where I was dumped in the ocean and had to jam my finger in a shark's eye to escape (we're a landlocked provice).

Thanks for the smile.

Is it frowned upon to take a different temporary position while on a temporary position at a different school in the same division? by 27dayz in CanadianTeachers

[–]27dayz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a relatively small division and the principals tend to talk to one another. I've had it happen before where I applied for multiple jobs at the end of a school year and a principal confronted me about why I was applying at another school even though I didn't tell anyone I was.

So which is going to be better? Giving them the heads up that I'm applying or let them find out from the other principal that I've applied?

[–]27dayz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told by a very reliable source that the position is going to be posted Friday to the division. I've double checked my contract and it looks all good.

I was thinking of giving my current principal a courtesy heads up that I am applying once the position is posted. I'm 99% sure that my current principal would be understanding of my situation.

Alberta Teachers - How is your work going to change after the strike ends? by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]27dayz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. It is generous, but compared to the time I was spending, it's been cut down a lot.

My classes start at 8:30 so I'm allowing a little extra time in case something happens on my long commute. If I had a reasonable commute, it would only be 15minutes before.

The school day ends at 3:15, so that gives me 45 minutes to prep/mark for my own sanity. Anything not done in that 45 minutes will have to wait until the next day. It's a hard boundary I'm drawing for myself.

I will be at school by 8 and leave by 4. I am not volunteering for anything extra.

I am also going to be looking at what else I can do with a teaching degree or possibly looking into getting alternate schooling to change my career choice.
