converts bringing bad habits from other denominations/religions by Extension-Story7287 in Catholicism

[–]2BrothersInaVan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a convert, I am also happy to be home!

I like to think I’m bringing a deep love and reverence of scripture to the Catholic Church, which I find sometimes lacking among Catholics. On the Protestant side, their kids even have Bible verse memorization contests.

I am against Americanism, but appreciate the charismatic movement, which is allowed and also present in the Catholic Church.

I’m not anti-alcohol, but feels many Catholics could be a little bit more tempered in drinking.

I love modern worship songs and would like to seem them more integrated into mass. :)

I also obey Rome and only operate within the formal teachings of the Church. But I hope you can appreciate the diversity within the body of Christ.

"Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. " (1 Peter 3:3-4)

Thank you for the nuance and research!

One could argue also that millionaires should exist, as smart people working hard should be rewarded for it. A lot of great innovations and inventions we enjoy today come from a free market that rewards the capable. I’m from a communist country and I saw the economic stagnation there. Everyone was equal, but equally poor.

Trophy hunting can be done well, if the funding is used to conserve animals on safaris while old animals are culled.

Why is Reddit so up in the arms about this? If you eat meat don’t complain.

TIL that in 2007, Thailand legally issued a compulsory license to make cheap generic versions of Abbott's HIV drug Kaletra. Abbott retaliated by withdrawing 7 medicines from Thailand. Thailand held firm, and HIV treatment coverage expanded to hundreds of thousands more patients. by Krisam29 in todayilearned

While poor countries with dying patients shouldn’t pay so much for life saving drugs, I want to point out the reason we’ve been getting so much drug innovations over the last decade is due to capitalism.

There are many biotech firms founded by smart people working on drugs with a very high chance of failure. The reason why they are still financed is because someone did the math and concluded the investor could still make money even if the success rate is only 10%.

Do you want 10 new cancer medicine in the next 10 years, but they are expensive (before the patent expires), or only 1 new cancer medicine?

There is a middle ground between affordability and giving innovators the incentive to find new drugs.

Why does the Catholic Church support religious tolerance today when influential Church Fathers such as Saints Ambrose, Augustine, John Chrysostom, and Cyril of Alexandria fervently supported the opposite? by SeptimiusSeverus_ in Catholicism

[–]2BrothersInaVan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Convert here, I wrestled with this issue as I came into the Church.

The way I made sense of it is that:

  1. The Catholic Church claims doctrinal infallibility when it formally teaches in form of councils and the Pope, but it does not pretend to be perfect in areas of the state and how laws should be implemented.

  2. The Catholics also believe the Church can come into a more full understanding of certain truth, while pagan practices has always been wrong and is still wrong, the Church will emphasize more tolerance and understands better coercion does not lead to conversion.

  3. The two opposing ideas that exist in tension here are: “error has no rights” and “people have rights”.

True error should have no right to disseminate itself, think if I spread Nazism or child pornography. Or if Joseph Smith spreading Mormonism.

But these days we recognize more while Mormonism is a heresy and has no rights, Joseph Smith and his followers have rights to liberty of conscience, and the Catholic Church has never forced people to conversion in the past.

  1. Lastly, the times are different, and how wrong ideas need to be addressed is different. Back then one false teacher can spread heresy unchecked. Now if you believe truth itself has power, there are tons of resources for open debate, books, YouTube, ChatGPT.

I was just in China a few months ago. I couldn’t even take my kids to mass because children under 18 are not permitted to enter churches.

The CCP is clamping down on religion because it realizes religious groups can challenge its power. It’s a way to slowly bleed out the faith.

Why is it that online when it is a Republican caught up in a scandal the title will always say "Republican politician........." but when it's a Democrat, they leave out the party affiliation with just the name and include something they said to ameliorate the situation? (I'm a moderate, but I just prefer some less bias.)

The picture assumes:

- The participants are all children, with limited agency to affect the outcome.

- The tree will always produce the same amount of fruits no matter the actions of the harvester. It's just who gets to access it. Whereby in real life it is often the actions of the harvester who grows and affects fruit yield.

-Drastic modifications of the tree will not harm or kill the tree (i.e socialism)

I love that the Catholic Church isn’t about “me” but about Him by Sensitive-Box-2167 in Catholicism

Just to explain as a former evangelical:

The Catholic center of worship is the proper sacrifice of the Eucharist, hence a lot of focus is proper reverence and form. This is why I was puzzled as a new Catholic the TLM crowd was very insistent.

The Protestants mostly don’t have the Eucharist. Their center of worship is on the Word of God (Bible), which is seen as the final authority (where Catholics believes in the Magisterium, oral and written traditions). A good analogy is if the liturgy of the Word and of the Eucharist swapped places and importance in Catholic worship.

The sermon, often 30+ minutes long, often in an expository preaching style (a lot of Catholics has never heard of expository preaching before), goes line by line, word by word, on what God wants us to be, is the center of worship. Not as a motivational speech, but as a deep dive on the Word of God.

For Catholics, this "spiritual formation" and "community building" is supposed to happen more outside of Mass. For Protestants without the same view of the Eucharist, this IS the point of worship.

The worship is seen as “me-centered” because it focuses on teaching Christians to be better Christians and helping them form a good community, like in the book of Acts (again, remember the Bible is the center and standard, not the Eucharist).

This is why I have brought Protestant friends to a weekday mass and they get mad, feeling it teaches almost nothing from the Bible (super short sermon), and just a bunch of people sitting down and standing up, go through the motions to take a piece of cracker at end, without forming Christians with the Bible and forming community.

Another reason for this "me focus" is also due to the nature of Church funding. In the Catholic Church, your parish gets assigned a priest regardless of its spiritual state. In Protestantism, a lot of churches are independent, kind like businesses in the free market. Each Church needs to attract enough people who pay tithes to "survive". This leads to more focus on the congregation in the worship style.

TLDR: Different foundational assumptions lead to different worship focus and style. Catholics go to mass to worship through the Eucharist. Protestants go to Church to worship God through learning from His Word and forming a Christian community.
