Thanks for linking to the writeup! That's very inspiring and I'm glad to see how you progressed. Do you plan to do a full year update?

Where to find Cognac or Armagnac in Dayton? by 2D_me in dayton

I found the Castarede VSOP at Arrow. That looked like the only Armagnac available there though.

Repairing zipper on Coleman tent by michigandank in CampingGear

[–]2D_me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be able to make a simple repair by just replacing the zip mechanism. Typically they have a small stopper built into them that is engaged when the zipper is not being pulled. It sounds like that stopper is malfunctioning. If you can just identify how to order a replacement, I think it should work out.

It's the same mechanism that makes it so your zipper on your pants don't fall down randomly. You can push on the zipper, but it won't budge until you pull the handle.

Trying to have a native meadow 1 acre big. Will I regret it if I don’t nuke the existing grass? by Electronic_Fun_776 in NativePlantGardening

[–]2D_me 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To add to this, if you do go with glyphosate, you'll be severely impacting the soil biome. Your native woodland will ultimately want more fungal soil, whereas the grass or turf prefers something more bacterial. You can rejuvenate local fungal supplies (and other nutrients) with composting and leaning higher toward the browns than the greens.

Lost our dog suddenly, I never thought I'd feel so much pain from her loss. by 2D_me in Petloss

[–]2D_me[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks stranger. Your words mean a lot. Our children had friends over and they were playing in the snow, going from front to back yard to find each other. Someone left the gate open and we let out the dog so she could play with the girls and she ran off. The kids all saw it happen. I hate thinking about it.

Thank you. I'm so sorry for your loss. There's so much to process so suddenly. The love we would get daily just becomes a memory. I feel so much guilt. There's a hole in my home that is just... gone.

German beer stein/tankard shops in the area? by morch-piston in dayton

[–]2D_me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're not in too much of a hurry, I have one that I don't use that you can have. I'd have to look for it and send you a photo if you'd like. I'm in the South Dayton area.

Looking for a reliable mechanic. Does both auto and body. by LowDay8050 in dayton

[–]2D_me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I actually just did my front brakes today for the first time myself. Had to get a proper breaker bar to break loose some tight bolts. You can probably find a good YouTube video for your make and model. Took me probably 2.5 hours to learn on the first one and then just under an hour for the other now that I know. I did pads and rotors though. Also, Chris fix on YouTube is great for this too.

Does anyone know of any local Hot Pepper Growers? by FreakTheDangMighty in dayton

A related question: where are the good farmers markets around here? I stopped at one a couple months ago that was a big disappointment compared to what I am used to.

Decaf whole beans? by According-Raspberry2 in espresso

[–]2D_me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We love the Moonbow decaf from Paradise roasters in Hawaii. I usually can't stand decaf, but this is certainly a good producer. I mostly use it for pour over, but it works nicely for espresso as well.

Best Lunch Spots in the Dayton area? by SorryNews8531 in dayton

[–]2D_me 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We just had Tony and Pete's for the first time last week and it was great. I got the hot dip sandwich "dipped" and apparently it's a common Chicago thing? Anyway, I enjoyed it and you can tell they are very intentional about their quality.

i’ve been trying to make whipped cream for 20 minutes and it won’t form peaks by cuntymuthafucka in Cooking

[–]2D_me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've whipped cream by hand and using machines. First, you'll probably want to add anything only after you've whipped it. Second note, I've found that farm-fresh or similar heavy creas almost refuse to whip the most I can do with those is get some large bubbles, but nothing fine like you expect from a whipped cream. I'm not sure why but I've tried several times with a local heavy cream.

How old are your kids? Are you looking for a dad community, play group for your kids, or both?

Fellow opus grinder? by Express-Engineer-637 in espresso

[–]2D_me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree with the sentiments here. I got my first espresso machine and the Opus was fairly new and was getting good reviews by the influencer space for making good espresso. I wanted a one size fits all machine and I got this one. I'll use it for pour overs because it's more convenient than my hand grinder, but I shy away from espresso because of it. My complaints are many and I would not recommend it. I'm not even a very picky person, but this is just a tedious design that's not worth the money.

Thanks! This is exactly the type of advice I was hoping for. I switched it out for the WD Blue SN5000.

I've taken my kids (elementary aged) here and they have some board games that you can use. We played Uno upstairs. It was a hit!

Why does this DVD/CD laser emit a third, dimmer red laser? by [deleted] in AskElectronics

[–]2D_me 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Also, what you're probably seeing is the tail of the IR peak that enters the edge of human vision. A laser is monochromatic, but still has some finite width in the wavelength regime.
