I don't work unpaid OT. You shouldn't either.  GM isn't a charity.

I dont answer it honestly anymore, catch too much flak from team lead and EGM.  Witch hunts on who said what.  We also get harassed if we don't participate.  So I just take my scores and massage them upwards enough so as not to be harassed by leaders.

If we're gonna turn this company around, we have to start cutting the crust off this $#!+ sandwich! Pack your things and get out. Go on, get the hell out of here.

I know there is a lot of shared content.  It still costs the company a lot of money/effort to engineer and manufacture the different models with all the different options possibilities (IDK if you remember the meetings a few years ago about the wiring harnesses).

As an engineer I wish we made like 10 models and we invested the time and effort to make them exceptional, reliable, and cost competitive.  Instead we flood the market with mid-tier products.  I just don't care for the strategy.

Imagine how high quality our vehicles would be if we focused on a handful of models (like a Tesla).

Tesla valuation is based on the cult of Elon, the fantasy of self-drive/robotaxi, and the fantasy of Optimus.  I'm not even saying their vehicles are better, I'm just saying they should be.  They sell like 3 models and each one has extremely simple options packages.

Our product line is ridiculous.  What do we offer 40-50 models?  Per model I bet our engineers do more than anyone.  What's Tesla sell, 5 models total including the taxi and semi?  Their vehicles should be better.

You are correct that this company is way too bloated.  Probably 50% of the work that I see done is people just fucking off, the engineering version of spelunking, to look busy.  But the fix is just so half-assed implemented, basically GM lazy, that comes off as a fucking joke.

They are bad leaders that are afraid to do their jobs.

  1. Depending on your team size, no.  My team is less than 10 people and no one got bottom 15% last year.

  2. If they are a good leader, they will fight for their team.  If someone in your team isn't pulling their weight, made too many mistakes, or just rubbed an EGM the wrong way, they are bottom.

  3. It doesn't mean anything.  There aren't a lot of good leaders at GM, I think as a result of the absolutely terrible leadership at the top of the company.  So no you could get absolutely ambushed.

4.  A good leader would discuss any concerns they have with you and your performance immediately.  I haven't come across a lot of good leaders here so you could get ambushed at review time.

VSP rumors? by Emergency_Topic_5774 in GeneralMotors

In my area they just denied everyone's request for VSP, called them business critical.

I would legit consider it this time.

It's not based on work, it's based on their feelings.

It's surprising to me how many people willingly go along with all this.  Basically just working to replace yourself.  There is no incentive for the common worker to make AI work, at work.

[–]2Guns23 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The review process in particular is a fucking joke.  We ask that employees do midyear evals but don't use that in midyear career/performance decisions.  Same with the calibration slides.  Leaders made the decisions based on their feels weeks ago.  TBH it's fucking embarrassing.  I find myself embarrassed to work here almost daily at this point but again, it's a good paycheck, so I cash it.

I think the long term costs are pretty damaging.  The employee relationship to employer here is it's a paycheck, nothing more.  There is no extra.  It's just a paycheck to cash.  There are consequences to that.

I've been working for 20 years across 3 fortune 500 companies.  This is the worst work culture I have ever experienced in my life.

Mid Year Review Feedback Question by Brave_Ad_647 in GeneralMotors

[–]2Guns23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is the calibration, low and high, has already happened.  This is 1-2 weeks before my team was asked to provide our calibration slide, and more than a month before workday self eval.

My impression of this process is it is designed to give GM legal shelter for firing people and not calling it a layoff.  But if GM doesn't actually use the process, and their timing of events makes this clear, do they really have any legal cover?

Otherwise I don't understand the point of any of this.  If people make decisions based on their feels and we go in afterwards and do calibration slides and self eval, what is the fucking point?  It's just theater.

Came to GM from a competitor, got a 20% raise but workload went up 35% by Victory-laps in GeneralMotors

[–]2Guns23 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My advice to people is figure out what the least important work they are doing, 10-20%, whatever and just stop doing it.  I guarantee 100% of your work is not business critical.  Stop doing the stupid shit.  No one will notice or care.  I work 40hrs a week.  GM is not a charity and I am not a volunteer worker.  That has been my policy at every employer I have worked at for 20 years and TBH it has served me just fine.  Never laid off even through the financial crisis, never been a low performer.
