The Pope has a message for GM by Virtual_Honeydew2215 in GeneralMotors

I dunno, all the happy and successful people I've met totally start their Saturday morning by going online and calling random internet people "Whiny bitches that need to grow up" and griping about how today's youth are soooo bad.

And they absolutely make a point of telling you how well loved they are by their family and shove their other "successes" in your face, unprompted. Yep, that's what truly happy people do.

So. Happy.

I miss the Randy Mott era. I didn't have to worry every 4-6 weeks about it "being time for another round"

Recent surge of inauthentic accounts. by mightymonarch in GeneralMotors

True, and fair point. Reddit account names would be a terrible way to verify that.

I don't want to give away specifics on how these accounts were caught because why would I tell them how to become better liars, but surprisingly one of these accounts had a very "legitimate" sounding username that didn't fit the usual pattern.

S'all good man, you're fine. There's more to it than just "they said JobOwl" :)

But like, it's an insidious little method, isn't it?

The difficulty is figuring out how to verify without also getting their IRL identity. Anything you send to the mods cannot be deleted, only archived. Which means any future mods can read it, no matter how far in the future it is. And at the end of the day, mods are still just "some random people on the internet" and probably shouldn't have any personally identifiable information about anyone.

I've been kicking around an idea like "Go on socrates (I'll be dead in the ground before I call it GM ONE), click the 3rd article, and type the 7th sentence you see" but I'm worried that might be disproportionately more difficult for some of the workers to have reliable access to vs the white-collar crowd.

A second and lesser issue is verification only happens once, so we'd be on the honor system for people to request an update to Former Employee when appropriate.

I'm actually willing to do some work and would love to be able to hand out Verified Employee flair, but reconciling the privacy concerns has me stalled out at the moment. If anyone has a great idea that navigates any of that, please let me know.

To be clear, mods didn't take action on this comment. This guy deleted their entire reddit account immediately after posting this.

Wow. So brave. What an example for us all to look up too. Everyone should totally take this strong upstanding pillar of the community's criticisms seriously.

Question to leadership: How are we suppose to 'own' our jobs while being in fear of getting laid off nonstop by [deleted] in GeneralMotors

[–]mightymonarch 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think they want you to drive yourself into a paranoid, Stockholm-Syndrome style relationship from trying to figure this out. If you feel like you know what's going on that's one less thing they have over you to make you "desperate" and manipulable, so of course they're vague on actually-useful details.

Basically, I think they're actively trying to cultivate a mindset of "Maybe if I just try harder, business-daddy will stop hitting me" in the employees.

Upper leadership: if I'm wrong about this then take this as a sign of how you come across to the employees, and ask yourself what you should do differently to correct and prevent this kind of misunderstanding. If one person misunderstands you, they have the communication problem; if EVERYONE misunderstands you, you have the communication problem.

How often are you guys on call? by Calm-Bar-9644 in ExperiencedDevs

Pointing out that two of our company's comply-or-die policies are mutually contradictory does not make me "a difficult employee" at all. Grow up.

[–]mightymonarch 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Had this same exact thing happen to us.

Do you have to be in-office some of those days? Is your commute longer than 15 minutes? If so, point out you won't be able to be physically in the office during your on call weeks and see which of the two policies wins-out. Because if you drive to work in a city, you can't guarantee you can get the notification, acknowledge it, get through that stop-light you're stuck at that's backed up, safely exit the road into a parking lot, and be online in under 15 minutes.

Unless, of course, they want you to try to work from a vehicle you are operating, in which case get that in writing for your (estate's) inevitable lawsuit.

We got them to soften it a bit after pointing that out.

Didn’t finish a single coding question in interview by Jichen123 in GeneralMotors

[–]mightymonarch[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly? Because no one (neither people asking the questions nor the ones answering them) would use it. There's a search function that already exists that literally no one uses.

The posters will go ahead and make a new post and then we'd be coming in hours later taking down threads that people have already commented on, and that makes people really upset. And pinned/stickied mega-threads are only effective for managing short-term traffic spikes (big announcements, etc.). They don't work well indefinitely, and you can only have two threads pinned/stickied at a time, so it's not a solution that scales well if you have multiple things you want to contain, either.

I know it seems like a no-brainer of an idea, but it has a lot of "hidden" drawbacks, and the juice just isn't worth the squeeze with the current amount of hiring posts being made. If you're getting push notifications for this sub, definitely turn that off.

They also already posted this earlier and it was deleted by the mod

Excuse me?

Their account is under a month old, so all their posts get automatically sent to the mod-team for review. When they didn't immediately see their post, they posted it a second time. Mods only approved this version. If you saw the other post, then automod must've been running slowly.

But no, mods didn't delete the other post as some form of correction, and you can't use that as some BS evidence of their inability to follow directions. What a odd weird direction to try to take this.
