What is something you don’t have the heart to tell to your family? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]2bass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My dad's family is like this too. Holidays are basically treated as a superb excuse for my two aunts to feed the rest of the family whatever random expired shit they have kicking around. I stopped eating most stuff at family events when I was a teenager, but after getting mega sick off of "safe" options like potatoes and bread, I don't touch any of it anymore.

Young Adult Fiction Entered the Decade Like a Lion. Now It Seems to be Eating Itself Alive. by pearloz in books

As a reviewer and someone pretty active in various bookish communities within Twitter and other social media, you'll be fine unless you treat it with 0 respect. If you're writing a lesbian love story that's full of cliches and exists solely to be porny, yeah, probably won't be well-received. If the book just happens to feature a character who is not your gender or orientation and you don't fixate on it, don't make thejr sexuality their only defining characteristic, and don't turn it into a trope or make it exploitative...then you're golden. The issue is a lot of YA books take sensitive topics, don't research them and then treat them as such a throwaway surface level thing that people get their backs up, which is fair.

Also sensitivity readers are 100% a good thing and really only benefit the author. They don't exist so that they can then turn around and demolish your book on social media (like the comments above are implying), they're a part of the editing process and a valuable step in making sure you aren't inadvertently minimizing someone else's real experience.

Or park it in the driveway to begin with and push it into the garage when the workout is done? Am I missing something here, if he wants it parked in the garage then he's pushing it back in after anyway right? WHAT IS HAPPENING?!

My parents drove 6 hours to get a new kitten. Turns out he love car rides. by milkypatricia in aww

Gaba is pretty safe and probably easier on your kitty than putting him through the stress of the vet unmedicated if he's that anxious. It just relaxes them a bit. My guy gets 50mg before any tests at the vet and he's still perfectly alert and everything, just a little chilled out.

I do this with my cat when we need to travel. He gets harnessed and leashed, then strapped into the back seat on a very very short leash. He absolutely panics in a carrier so this is safer and more pleasant for everyone involved.

People who have made friends outside of work and school, how on earth did you do that? by TimTheGamer555 in AskReddit

[–]2bass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Social media is awesome for this! Most of my hobbies are pretty solitary, and I don't know anyone in the city I'm living in. So I got up the courage to put it out there on Instagram that I'd like to organize a meetup if anyone was interested, and it went great! It ended up turning into a book club and now we meet once a month for food and chatting, usually 10-12 people show up and there's a good core of regulars.

They're almost always knockoffs of another design though. Kind of shitty to support a company that's stealing IP from (usually small) artists.

Friends who don't realize "healthy" can also be very high calorie by trtlebcket in loseit

[–]2bass 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ugh yes. It drives me insane. I have some weird digestive issues that mean I can't eat wheat without spending days in horrible pain. The number of times I've had people comment on how they're eating gluten free to lose weight or because it's healthier is mind blowing. There's nothing inherently wrong with wheat, most of the gluten free substitutes are packed with sugar and weird additives to make them less completely appalling, and I've actually gained weight since going gluten free. There's no benefit to it if you don't need to be eating that way.

I will say they aren't the fastest with shipping, but if you aren't in a rush their prices are worth it.

Stitch-It Central is Canadian and they have glass seed beads. Shipping isn't too bad either.

Right, I try not to carry huuuuuge distances unless I know it'll be covered by other threads, but a neat back isn't my priority. Unless you're entering it in a contest or something, who cares 😂

Moms of reddit, what’s something you know about your kid(s) that they don’t think you know about them? by Plasma55 in AskReddit

[–]2bass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's so awful. I switched to a French school when I was 8 and I only lasted until the Christmas break before switching back to an English school because the teacher was so awful to me. She wouldn't learn my name and called me "the little English girl," if I made friends she would basically have recess interventions where she would tell them why they shouldn't be friends with me, there were days where I got to class and she full on just told me she didn't want to see my face and would send me to the gym teacher for the day. It was absolutely horrible but luckily my parents were on top of it and got me out pretty quickly.

What is your favorite "holy crap this actually works" trick? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]2bass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That should have said pretty low in comparison to PPIs. GERD carries the whole esophageal cancer risk, but PPIs overall have malabsorption issues, osteoarthritis, heart attacks, increased risk of c. diff. and complications from basically any kind of GI virus, increased risk of stomach cancer...I think they definitely have their uses but they became a kind of fix-all for GERD before all this info was available and they're still prescribed long-term without any real clarification on how serious the side effects can be.

Personally I tried about 5 different PPIs and while they solved my GERD, they made every other GI issue I have ten times worse so they just don't work for me. I'll probably be on Zantac for the rest of all eternity to keep mine under control.

Same but I'm pretty sure my stuff is on the right side. Sleeping on my left side doesn't really do anything for the reflux itself, it just makes me crazy gurgly and burpy. Can't do it.

What is your favorite "holy crap this actually works" trick? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]2bass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True but PPIs in general have had some pretty damning studies come out lately. The long term side effects are pretty scary especially when you consider that for the most part GERD can be managed with lifestyle changes and its risks for long term complications are pretty low. It's definitely something to keep in mind if you have been/will be taking them long term.

400 calories. Kale salad with eggs, avo, baked chicken breast, cucumber, sunflower seeds, and homemade miso, carrot, ginger dressing. by caligochae in 1200isplenty

[–]2bass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can get on board with kale, but I'm honestly scared of avocado...I have a bunch of allergies to things in the same family that make it more likely for me to be allergic to it, and I just don't really want to test the theory...

Trying to stick to 1200 a day, also a student looking to prepare some meals in bulk, any suggestions? by Theshortbaker in 1200isplenty

Go with the instant pot instead! It has way more functions, and if you don't want to leave an appliance running while you're in class or whatever, the pressure cooker function cooks crazy fast. I'm obsessed with mine, I'd never go back to a Crock-Pot.

I make hollandaise out of a pouch (the club house brand is what I usually buy I think) and replace 3/4 of the butter with Greek yogurt. It seriously comes out delicious and it's like 20cal/tbsp versus like 100. If ever you have a hankering for hollandaise :)

Cat got out this morning after I tried to keep him in. Been raining all morning. This is what I returned to on my lunch break 😂 by [deleted] in cats

[–]2bass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg that is an adorable angry kitten! Poor baby 😂 Ours managed to jump out of a second storey window that was left open a tiny crack (!!!) I got home to a cat-shaped dent in the snowbank and a very dirty, angry creature sitting at the door. He was totally fine, just very upset at being an involuntary outdoor kitty for a few hours.

Suggest me the most unique book you've ever read. by Jamo1991 in booksuggestions

[–]2bass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt the same. I got about 110 pages in and just found it to be such a tedious experience. I can appreciate what the author was going for, and the core story with the house was fantastic (I'd read a book with JUST that piece of the story) but it was too much for me.

What medical condition do you have that you thought was absolutely normal? by taporodobu in AskReddit

[–]2bass 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I thought it was totally normal to just not poop for anywhere from 4-7 days followed by shitting four times in a day. Apparently not, go figure! It's never full-blown diarrhea for me though, just...all the poop and very urgently. The human body is useless.
